The record got an awful review on AMG, but I maintain excitement.

Wow that Allmusic.com review is totally boneheaded.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

I heard him on the radio the other day being interviewed and he gave this great long-winded explanation of why the album is called Trinity, that it's being released 3 years after Dutty Rock, on the 27th day of the 9th month, and that 9 times 3 is 27, and it was recorded in Jamaica, "the so-called third world", and so on.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah, in the Stage One review the writer (not the same one who reviews the Trinity) says, "...[H]e possesses neither an unusual voice nor outstanding skill." Umm...

emilys. (emilys.), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

(I'm so sad that the Jamaican restaurant down the street from my house is gone and I will never again see the signed Dutty Rock poster---he drew a dog smoking a joint on it!)

Haha well The Trinity allmusic review is basically DANCEHALL STAR RECORDS DANCEHALL ALBUM THIS MAKES ME VERY UNHAPPY.

This is all over filesharing...no one else heard it yet? it's ok - not as good as previous.

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

i've had this for a week or so and it's really good. this is coming from the guy that started this thread Has the quality and/or quantity of good dancehall diminished this year or is it lack of interested posters?

I've only heard about half of it (the singles on the big riddims.) I'm kind of surprised that Atlantic didn't try to get him to make more of a crossover record (although maybe they did and that's why the record took so long) but I'm not upset about that either as I like straight dancehall records better than poorly thought out records overstuffed with guest-stars.

Well, I'm a Luddite. I didn't even know the shit existed until I read spizzazz.com today.

emilys. (emilys.), Monday, 26 September 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

"Don't bother waiting for a song that isn't hyper-sexualized..."

Trust me, AMG, I never do!

emilys. (emilys.), Monday, 26 September 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

If they will insist on putting on something as old as "Ever Blazing", then they really should have included "Close To Me", which could have been a huge single.

Also "Life Is A Gift"!!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 26 September 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

Haven't heard enough of it to call - but will check it out; I think its good that it appears to be mostly Jamaican producers and guests - prefer that to a watered down crossover record.

Bn1 (Bn1), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

totally life is a gift!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

ugh, it sort of sucks! Plus it will forever be linked to the first time I heard it, in Central Park where a guy exposed himself to me and began furiously jerking off.

emilys. (emilys.), Thursday, 6 October 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

..actually that experience gives it an extra dimension that it would probably otherwise lack

emilys. (emilys.), Thursday, 6 October 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

emily, Life is a Gift

Bobby Count (jaxon), Thursday, 6 October 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

yes, a gift this man wasted as he spilled his seed on the ground

emilys. (emilys.), Thursday, 6 October 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

anyone heard anything from the new album? theres a lot riding on this apparently, not just for him but dancehall in general...

I think you're being a tad dramatic. Oh noes, no easy to hear crossover dancehall for Americans, Brits and others may diminish Sean Paul's income and keep the US/UK meme alive that dancehall has not mattered for (rap, r'n'b, and rock fans) for years, but in Jamaica I do not think Sean Paul's success or not elsewhere will have a momentous impact or not on the state of dancehall on that island.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 1 July 2009 13:27 (sixteen years ago)

just going on what i read of a meeting between a journo in the uk and one of the main guys at VP when they were previewing the new album... though that might be more of the journo projecting his own hopes onto the album.
