The saddest outtake title I've heard.

But outtakes or not, it's amazing.

Is this available in the UK now?

I haven't seen it anywhere. I can't find that Dirtbombs double set either.

Louie_Strychnine, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

I knew this was your thread!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it's out yet there, I just realized it had been released here yesterday.

Of course it's mine. Not much talk of Reigning Sound around here.

I could talk about Giant Drag and Wolf Parade if you'd like.

Camtron (Cameron), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

Looking forward to seeing Reigning Sound in Nov.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I know, they put on one hell of a live show.

Cartwrights enthusiasm, with how tight they are. Fucking great.

Camtron (Cameron), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

i was really disappointed by this. i think they're better at full-pelt, when greg's barking the lyrics.

have they ever recorded their cover of 'suspicious minds'? that is awesome...

foxy boxer (stevie), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

best thing I've bought in months. I like screaming, spasm-ing Greg myself, but this and the first RS record really foreground his songwriting and production skillz. They played a couple of these last weekend between some of the more aggressive numbers. sounded great.

Will (will), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

I thought the first RS record, "Break Up, Break Down" really foregrounded his songwriting skills. It's a really quiet record, esp compared to everything else.
Agreed on them live - they're incredible.

TRG (TRG), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

If I love Timebomb High School, will I love this?

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Bummed to find out this was outtakes (though "If You Can't Give Me Everything" was last year's Most-stuck-in-my head tune, so maybe it's worth it for that alone)...

Does anyone know when an LP of new material is going to be ready??

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

It's a lot closer to Time Bomb High School than Too Much Guitar. It's the same line-up that recorded the former, doing versions of the latter for the most part.

Speaking of RS live, anyone get that live album that came out last month? If so, any good?

Vic Funk, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I love the live album, but I was predisposed to love it. If you're a fan I can't see you having a problem with it. Play loud of course.

TRG (TRG), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

i love this band... they're playing round here in october, but it's the same night as Jonathan Richman, dunno if i can pass him up for these folks, great as they are.

sublime frequency (sublime frequency), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

I didn't really like Time Bomb High School that much, but I love Too Much Guitar. Haven't heard the first one yet. I'll check this out anyway.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

dude, fuck jonathan richman.

is 'home for orphans' the new one on Norton? We have a copy at the record store of that one--my co-worker is a huge fan, and Billy from Norton lives on the block and hooks it up for us.

The album isn't so much outtakes as an unreleased record. Most of the stuff on Home For Orphans was actually supposed to be their third album, but then the keyboard player (Alex Greene, I think?) left the band. After playing a tour without him, Greg felt that the mellowness wasn't a good representation of the 3-piece bands more agressive sound, so they recorded and released Too Much Guitar.
Oh, and it's on Sympathy.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

John50n. It's new on Sympathy.

Richman is fun, but at home fun for me. When I go to see a show I want energy.

It fucking crackles around them.

Camtron (Cameron), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it was Alex Greene. Damn shame he left, too. I thought the keys really rounded out their sound - live and on the albums. In fact, the entire original line up has been replaced. On another message board Greg mentioned bringing another keyboardist/ second guitar/ all-around utility player into the fold.

Will (will), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

That's interesting. When he talked about the decision to scrap the recordings that became Home For Orphans he used the word "overcompensating" in describing how they were playing up for the absence of Alex.
As for the new line-up, I'm sure tthat's because he's not in Memphis anymore and the band wasn't really going to work as a long-distance relationship, especially with a songwriter as prolific as Greg. He decided that rather than "go solo" he'd just use the name "Reigning Sound" for his band no matter who's in it.
By the way, they've been playing a handful of Oblivians and Compulsive Gamblers songs live for a while now. Which I think is pretty cool.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and by the way - Jack Oblivian and the Tearjerkers's new one Don't Throw Your Love Away is really, really awesome and excellent.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

yeah this post dated back to April and mentioned the new guy would be in place by the May shows. I guess the idea was scrapped.

YES, the new Tearjerkers record is awesome. But even better than that is the live show. I've caught different incarnations of the TJ's over the last 5 years and this is far and away the best.
