Isn't their little market niche comfortably filled @ the moment by goldie lookin chain?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

and just what is their name now ..

no FC ?

didn't they become known as The Sultans and released a final album which was a lot more noisy ? cant recall all details as i never picked that one up.

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

The first gig Dawn and I went to, together. Should we go see a band I like, or someone I'd not seen before? Yeah, risk it. Make or break.

Band came on, and played "Kick me with your leather boots", Dawn smiled, and all was well. That was 1991, and we're still here folks.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 09:28 (twenty years ago)

... and so, unfortunately, are the Sultans of Ping, 'twould appear. Alas!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

Play London pls.

I still love this band. I was playing Casual Sex in the Cineplex a couple of weekends ago, in fact.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

as i said on another thread, bridewell taxis have also reformed

terry lennox. (gareth), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

And, erm, Three Colours Red.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

3CR have been reformed for about three years now haven't they? Aren't they going to split up again?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

They will always live in my heart for introducing the concept of 'jumpers' to me, as I knew not the term beforehand.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

Have they reformed as the jolly tongue-in-cheek pranksters who recorded the fabulous Casual Sex In The Cineplex, or as the miserable, po-faced, bunch of 2nd-rate Stooges wannabes full of their own self-importance that they later inexplicably metamorphosed into in a bizarre attempt to be taken seriously?

Mark, was that gig at the Fez (or rather, Alley cat Live)? If so, guess what...?

For some reason I thought you and Dawn had been together a lot longer than that?

It's true, they have reformed, they will be playing a variety of early and late stuff (and lots of Casual Sex) and the first and only UK gig is in Essex in November. The redpenguin link has the details and there are also links to a couple of interviews they've given recently.

Eddie Curry, Thursday, 29 September 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

No, that was at the After Dark. That is a long time, check the calendar!

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 30 September 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

I saw them at the Pink Toothbrush in 1992 with Radiohead supporting them, that was some gig!!

John4456, Friday, 30 September 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

will radiohead be supporting them on this mini-tour.

oh say it will be so!!!!

danny boy, Friday, 30 September 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

sultans were my first gig too. 1992 at the marquee. we all lay on the floor and waved our legs in the air during a song about a fish. ah, happy times.

Pete W (peterw), Friday, 30 September 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

"No, that was at the After Dark."

You're right of course, my memory's playing tricks with me again: me and a couple of mates saw them when they played the After Dark (before they started taking themselves too seriously) and they were fantastic; so when they were listed to play the Alley Cat a year or 2 later we persuaded a load of other people to come with us.... unfortunately The Sultans had evidently disappeared up their own Ping during the intervening period.

"That is a long time, check the calendar!"

Y'call 14 years a long time? Pah! I'll see your 14 years and raise you another 14! (I thought you and Dawn first got together in the late '70's / early '80's, like me and C*).

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 30 September 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Tickets went on sale for this today - never thought I'd see them live again so I am there!

Adrian11, Monday, 3 October 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for that - does anyone know anything about the venue?

Andrew Mackenzie, Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

I rang the venue today, apparently holds about 250 and tickets are selling fast, there's not likely to be a second date and there's no other UK shows booked at the moment.

Adrian11, Friday, 7 October 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Saw the news on drowned in sound today. This made my day!!!

Ah, but in the late seventies, Dawn would have been nine.

Oddly enough, When Dawn and family came down to a Henley campsite for a holiday in 1982 or thereabouts, they went to see "Hansel and Gretel" in the theatre in town, which was staged by my sister, with backstage assistance from my mother (amongst other people), so If i'd actually gone to see this as well, (possibly the only thing she did that I didn't go and 'support' her with), I'd have possibly met Dawn Wayyyyyyyyyyy too early.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

Actually, back to the Sultans at the After Dark...

One thing I do remember was:

Before they came on, a six-foot plus bloke in a long black overcoat, emerging from the bar doing the slow twist, uncontrollably, like on board ship, then toppling over like the last moments of megaJenga and landing on all the indie kids sitting down on the floor with their drinks. Someone would get the guy, 'help' him up and take him out the back door. Ten minutes later, he'd re-emerge from the bar once again to general "oh no!" from everyone.... (repeat...)

seven years pass...

So there was a documentary? And it's on Vimeo?

@EddieArgos 5m

This Sultans Of Ping documentary http://vimeo.com/36798784 @LukeHaines_News just sent me is AMAZING. Watch it.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 23:26 (twelve years ago)

Whoa, waidamin:

Luke Haines is promoting the Sultans of Ping?

"Want", obv. Thanks Ned!

Mark G, Thursday, 1 August 2013 06:57 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I was a little 'Huh...I thought Luke Haines hated everything' about that tweet.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 1 August 2013 14:15 (twelve years ago)

ten years pass...

One of the least cool bands of all time of course but I love their first 2 albums and saw them in London tonight. They played every song I like by them. They even played Riot at the Sheepdog Trials (the song Mark G quoted in the OP).

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 11 November 2023 23:25 (two years ago)

Very correct!
