I have been listening to Hendrix and Love a lot lately. I've just acquired The Band and Disraeli Gears, but what else do I need? I never really liked The Who, The Kinks of The Small Faces much, or The Doors either.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

And I really don't like Dylan. I love 60s bass playing and drum rolls.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

I was listening to Buffalo Springfield Again last night, good stuff. I'm very into this era right now.

Keith C (lync0), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe there's only one response so far.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Nick :(

Do you have The Misunderstood "before the dream faded"? That's good. Pretty wild proto-psych.

The Pretty Things - SF Sorrow

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

If you like Love, I'd really recommend the Music Machine. The Beyond the Garage CD is a good comp. And the Seeds. And the first two 13th Floor Elevators albums.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Sick,

Do you have both the Nuggets box sets? Those a both great...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

Yardbirds - Roger the Engineer

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Saucerful of Secrets

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Also, Bubbly Puppy is kind of Cream-y (maybe sub-Cream-y).

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

bubble puppy aren't really that creamy.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Assuming you've got broadband, give Technicolor Web of Sound a try. Where else are you going to hear "Eiderdown Clown" by The Scots of St. James? Seriously, it's a great station, including period ads, band promos and PSAs.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

You might try White Light, White Heat by the Velvet Underground. Well-regarded, though somewhat noisy.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Ha! I was just about to recommend the Technicolor Web of Sound station! My favorite late-night listening.

P.S. Bubble Puppy is the most unlistenable band ever.

Joe McCombs, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

"P.S. Bubble Puppy is the most unlistenable band ever."

no way, they were great. so was Demian.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

What's Demian like? Was that a Bubble Puppy spinoff? In the cream and Hendrix-y vein I'm also tempted to recommend the Moving Sidewalks but I can't remember if their album is actually good or not.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

moving sidewalks were cool. i never thought of cream or hendrix in connection with bubble puppy, but that's just me. there were lots of great creamy/hendrixy power trios back then. tons. demian took the hard rock side of bubble puppy and made it a little harder. the 70's had arrived.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Procol Harum. A couple Steppenwolf albums. Alice Cooper's "Easy Action" which was released early 1970 but sure sounds late-60's.

George the Animal Steele, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

CCR

Jeff LeVine (Jeff LeVine), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Big fans of Are You Experienced will surely enjoy the Moving Sidewalks album quite a bit because quite a bit of it sounds quite a bit like Are You Experienced. Not a bad ripoff in any sense - this is Billy Gibbons we're talking about here.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

A few songs I'd recommend:

Paul Revere & the Raiders, "Let Me"
Crow, "Evil Woman Don't Play Your Games With Me"
Electric Flag, "Groovin' Is Easy" (despite the dated lyrics)
Crabby Appleton, "Go Back"
Deep Purple, "Hush" (just cuz they haven't been mentioned yet)
Rugbys, "You, I" (corny but interesting on first listen, and I love the title)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

I guarantee you'll love the monks

sffd, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

The Rolling Stones Aftermath. A band that is often credited with originating the "hard" style of rock music. Had a darker vision than their well-known contemporaries, the Beatles.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

The Deviants!

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 04:08 (twenty years ago)

The Chambers Brothers "Time Has Come Today." Dub metal.

second SF Sorrow. also, "faintly blowing" by kaleidoscope

Two words: Spooky Tooth

Karl Hemstrun, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

The Best of the Animals. R&b combo from northern England celebrated for its gritty approach to black music, actually did its best work toughening up pop songs provided them by white commercial songwriters.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

(By the way, Nick, if you love bass playing, I recommend the second half of Bless Its Pointed Little Head by the Jefferson Airplane.)

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

Skip Spence "Oar" recorded live under the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and the guy did it with a nosebleed in one take with one hand up Jeannie C. Reilly's skirt.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Thursday, 29 September 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Parachute is a better record than S.F. Sorrow.

JAS, Thursday, 29 September 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

"Parachute is a better record than S.F. Sorrow."

they are both great. there is no need to choose. just listen to them back to back like i do. then it is just one great big great album.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 September 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

As the mid to late 60s represent the creative peak of rock'n'roll, is this question really that different from "Name some good rock bands?" A bit vague, huh?

Roe Joe, Thursday, 29 September 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah, kinda, except he hates lots of great stuff too, so it makes it more of a challenge. or something.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 September 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

Your POX non-obvious 60s bands was neat. I felt obligated to check out bands from that wellknown era I hadn't heard before. For better or worse. For instance, I'd never listened to the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, and now I know that no one under any circumstances should ever listen to the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band.

Roe Joe, Thursday, 29 September 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - same title

antonio, Thursday, 29 September 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

The Lemon Pipers, /Green Tambourine/ is kind of cornball and Monkees-esque but has some great little songs on it...

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 29 September 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

Velvet Underground and Nico (the one with the banana on the front & produced by Andy Warhol). "Sunday Morning" is one of my favourite songs ever! Most have probably heard it.

salexander (salexander), Thursday, 29 September 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

Bump.

So now I love The Zombies, Love, The MC5, Motown, Stax, Beatles, Byrds, Hendrix, etc, etc; I want some more rocking 60s stuff with hints of psychedelia or jazz...

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 09:42 (seventeen years ago)

Also adore Tropicalia.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)

The Doors! Why not?!??!?

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

I REALLY like Break On Through and When The Music's Over; everything else leaves me cold. Don't like Morrison.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 09:48 (seventeen years ago)

Early 70s more than acceptable. Keep in m,ind; I dislike Pink Floyd. Who I am listening to right now, in yet another effort to see if I've just missed something. I haven't; they're shite.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 09:50 (seventeen years ago)

Spirit? Or is that too 'rock'?

Moby Grape 1st album.

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 09:50 (seventeen years ago)

I much prefer Moby Grape's second album!

That was my other 'recent' discovery, along with Odessey.

You may have to be quick though, as the first three CD reissues were withdrawn for odd "Katz" related issues: forget looking for CD1, cd3 is boring jams, CD2 is still around if you're lucky.

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

forget looking for CD1 because it's gone, not because it's bad (it's not), just "Wow" is better

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 10:04 (seventeen years ago)

Seriously, have you lost your marbles altogether?

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 10:06 (seventeen years ago)

The Monkees. The Monkees. The Monkees. The Monkees. The Monkees. The Monkees. The Monkees. The Monkees. The Monkees. The Monkees. The Monkees.

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 October 2008 10:06 (seventeen years ago)

You were saying about marbles?

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 10:10 (seventeen years ago)

The Monks - Black Monk Time
The Sonics - Here Are The Sonics
The Byrds - Notorious Byrd Brothers
The Kinks - Something Else
The Beach Boys - Wild Honey

the next grozart, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 10:15 (seventeen years ago)

The Action. More of a 60s soul thing than rock, but they were fantastic musicians.
There's a good LP compilation, The Ultimate Action. Some CD issues, like Action Packed, include Wasn't It You, which is a must.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 12:00 (seventeen years ago)

I was never very listy until ILM corrupted me. What can i say, it's been a long winter. the trees are bare. the wind howls. This is inspired by the 500 top noise albums thread i started and which was a rousing success. and that nuggets thread reminded me that i've been meaning to do this for a while. if you hate lists, um, that's fine. anyway, feel free to contribute your fave psych moments from the 60's. any genre. jazzpsych, folkpsych, funkpsych, electropsych. exploitopoppsych. loony/loser/lonerpsych. whatever you want. it should, however, smell like acid, taste like acid, and feel like acid.and it should be something that you really like.remember, not everything with a farfisa and some fuzz guitar was all that lysergically inclined. course, it's all in the eye of the beholder. If you want to add comments, feel free! we can all learn something. and point out stuff that people shouldn't live without. This may take awhile, but i've got all winter. one more thing, feel free to list individual songs."put them in quotes".so many great no-album wonders out there.(if this goes well, i'll start a thread for the 1970's & beyond) Feel free to add reissues of stuff that never saw the light of day until recently.these are not in order of greatness, by the way. that's too hard to do. well, the first 5 maybe.

1.13th Floor Elevators-The Psychedelic Sounds Of (buy it. learn it. live it.)

38.Tomorrow-S/T
39.Harumi-S/T
40.The Hobbits-Men and Doors
41.The Hobbits-Down To Middle Earth (The Hobbits records aren't great but they are entertaining.and what you would often get with studio exploito-psych albums are really great bad trip tunes with lots of screaming and madness. see:william shatner, sonny bono, etc. or RCA's Three Ring Circus album which is really creepy circus clown psych-pop. oh, there are hundreds of examples. i've always had a soft spot for the cheesiness. i'm someone who could never understand the Ultimate Spinach hate. so, it's silly! it's monumentally silly. and groovy.)
42.The Electric Prunes-Underground

53.The Unspoken Word-Tuesday,April 19th (this is pretty cheap on ebay usually. and it's great folk-psych. not a big name or rarepsychmonster or anything, but very very lovely.)
54.The World Of Oz-S/T (one of the most twee fairytale psych albums of all time. Makes Nirvana sound like Blue Cheer. um, the old Nirvana that is.)
55.Joyride-Friendsound (This was reissued too! on vinyl! By a major label! also one of my faves. 3 former members of Paul Revere & The Raiders make one of the greatest Krautrock albums of all time. who would have guessed?)
56.Judy Henske & Jerry Yester-Farewell Aldebaran (Mojo jacked the price of this one up on ebay when they featured judy in an issue. which is good if i ever want to sell mine. but i don't.)

58.The Group Image-A Mouth In The Clouds

So now I love The Zombies, Love, The MC5, Motown, Stax, Beatles, Byrds, Hendrix, etc, etc; I want some more rocking 60s stuff with hints of psychedelia or jazz...

You just recently started loving the Beatles??? I thought everyone was bottle-fed them from the crib.

Seems like you should really give The Kinks another try. If you like the above, I can't fathom why you wouldn't like Face To Face/Something Else/Village Green. Also can't tell if you'd given S.F. Sorrow a shot, or The Small Faces' There Are But Four and Ogden's Nut Gone Flake another try. They are the definition of rocking 60s stuff with hints of psychedelia. Otherwise, you might find something you like below:

Oh Tropicalia is sooo good. I'm specially fond of Jorge Ben 'A tabua de esmeralda' and his self titled from 1969 are amazing.

Here's a few I'd recommend in case you still haven't heard them:

13th Floor Elevators - The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators (Collectables, USA, 1966)
Misunderstood – Before The Dream Faded (Cherry Red, UK, 1966)
Moby Grape - Moby Grape (San Francisco Sound, USA, 1967)
Pearls Before Swine - Balaklava (Get Back Italy, USA, 1968)
Donovan - A Gift From A Flower To A Garden (Collector’s Choice, UK, 1968)
The Flat Earth Society – Waleeco (Arf Arf, USA, 1968)
Mad River – Mad River (Edsel Records UK, USA, 1968)
Savage Resurrection – Savage Resurrection (Mod Lang, USA, 1968)
HP Lovecraft – II (Collector’s Choice, USA, 1968)
Amon Düül - Psychedelic Underground (Repertoire, Germany, 1969)

Also can't help noticing you wrote on your hate of Pink Floyd. While I'm not precisely fond of Pink Floyd myself (to be honest I dislike most of their output) I love Meedle. Take a listen to songs 'pillow of winds' or 'fearless', perhaps you might enjoy them, they're slightly different in mood and arrangements than their usual pletora of synthetizers and indulgent guitar solos.

A good one recently recommended on the eMusic thread that you might have missed:

wow, that list of mine is old now. i still like all that stuff though. someone should really reissue that group image album. i don't think anyone has. i could be wrong.

I have Meddle. Doesn't suck as much as Dark Side, but still sucks. PF are just so... polite, and straight, and boring. The guitar sound is boring. Guitars should NEVER sound boring.

you don't even like Syd-era Floyd...?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 14 October 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

cuz the guitar sound on See Emily Play and Arnold Layne is definitely not boring

Zillions of good things above. A few that might have been missed:

The Lovin' Spoonful Summer in the City

The Sir Douglas Quintet She's About A Mover

Joe Cocker The Letter

The Allman Bros In Memory of Elizabeth Reed

I've never listened to Syd-era Floyd; Waters & thingy-era Floyd have sullied them that much for me. That guitar sound, those lyrics, the, as someone on this forum once put it, "whoah Bodyform" female backing vocals... just hideous.
