Odd Springsteen-knockoff career diversion or Rod's secret finest hour?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

It's no secret: this is one of his finest hours. The smart appropriation of New Wave robo-rhythms, his confident vocal, that grrrreat guitar solo.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Always puts a smile on this face.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

so good, but sounds a lot like dancer in the dark, no? what are the lyrics about anyway

mitch dub (ano ano), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

This may have been my first music purchase.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

And why isn't it called 'Young Hearts'?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)

"Young Turks" (1981) was released before "Dancing in the Dark" (1984).

It's about a guy who knocks up his girlfriend, he doesn't mind, she doesn't mind, cuz they love each other, and they're young.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

From Webster's:

"6 often not capitalized : a usually young dynamic person eager for change; especially : YOUNG TURK"

Have you seen the video???

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

re "young hearts," yeah, it took me many years to realize that yes, i do in fact know his tune "young turks" very very well. love it.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

I can only remember Catherin O'Hara as Brooke Shields singing this.

when something smacks of something (dave225.3), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

It's about a guy who knocks up his girlfriend

...who gave birth to a TEN-POUND BABY BOY. That's some big kid.

TEN POUND BABY BOYOYOY

jb, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

The Young Turks were a youth movement demanding secular reform during the waning days of the Ottoman Empire.

Rod Stewart: Historian!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

has anyone heard Rod's debut album from 69 on Vertigo Swirl? "An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down" (AKA The Rod Stewart Album)

YOU ALMOST STABBED YOURSELF IN THE FACE LIKE A HULKAMANIAC (jaxon), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

CUT MY LIFE INTO PIZZAS ;_; (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Please figure out for me in which order these songs whould be mixed:

She's a Maniac
Young Turks
Steppin' Out

Thanks

PappaWheelie B.C., Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Pappa, I think "Tonight I'm Yours (Don't Hurt Me)" would work better than "Young Turks" in that set.

Joe McCombs, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

She's a Maniac
Young Turks
Steppin' Out

Woah..I'm pretty sure those three songs (maniac is the only one i'm not so sure about) were on the very first record I ever bought...K-Tel Hit Explosion!

I became pretty obsessed with Steppin' Out and Young Turks when I were a wee lad.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

M@TT, if you want, we can replace maniac with Shake it Up by Teh Cars.

PappaWheelie B.C., Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

I know (Do You Wanna) Touch by Joan Jett was on it....and some wierd Santana new wave song (wtf)....Also, Love +1 by Haircut 100....Space Age Love Song by Flock of Seagulls....shit...it was pretty awesome actually...maybe I peaked as a record buyer with my first album....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

yes, cut maniac and we're onto something.

and i would like to thank this thread for putting young turks on repeat in my head since i first clicked on it this morning. cheers.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

and some wierd Santana new wave song (wtf)....

Was this not "Winning" (his big early 80's hit)?

PappaWheelie B.C., Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

My favorite use of "Maniac" was on King of The Hill, when they adapted it for their trade show act.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

yes, cut maniac and we're onto something.

Commandin' the cut he's always on track
He's DJ Jazzy Jeff and he's a cut maniac
So for your personal safety you should be told
That my DJ Jazzy Jeff is (out of control)

(The more I think about it, Maniac followed by Young Turks would make a great transistion in a hits mix.)

PappaWheelie B.C., Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

Robert Palmer's "Johnny & Mary": C or D?

a, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Previously on ILM:
Rod Stewart's "Young Turks"

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

and Tom's last revival of that thread:

i can't believe I had never heard this before today and immediately wanted to start a thread on it. It's terrific - disco Springsteen before Springsteen went disco!
-- Tico Tico (ticoticoil...), March 2nd, 2004 4:43 AM. (Tico Tico)

How did you not hear this until last year!?!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

i never got the appeal of this song. if i want cheesy rod stewart, then i stick with "do you think i'm sexy."

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

Haha! How did I wait 18 months before starting that thread, too?

I have no idea Gygax! It's not a 'big song' of Rod's over here, weirdly, in fact nowadays Rod is dead to radio after '74 or so.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

Sailing, Killing Of Georgie, Do Ya Think I'm Sexy, Baby Jane...you quite sure about that?

Am writing about TIY and YT in my forthcoming 1981 blog, so will shut up about them until then.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 06:55 (twenty years ago)

We have oldies stations on at work quite a lot MC and I don't think I've ever heard any of those, maybe "Sailing" once during a particularly grim hour on Magic FM! "Maggie May" still gets much airplay tho.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 06:57 (twenty years ago)

"Farewell" was a top ten hit for Rod in '74 and I have NEVER heard it played on any radio station since its original chart run.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

almost as good as boys of summer.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 07:22 (twenty years ago)

I love this and 'Tonight I'm Yours (Don't Hurt Me)'.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

k-classic. as a kid I spent a lot of time convincing myself that he must have said "turks" somewhere, maybe in the fadeout. nope.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

the greatest moment I had in grand theft auto: san andreas was running over a bunch of survivalist nutjobs on their farm in a combine harvester as they tried to shoot me. the soundtrack to this? "young turks" by rod stewart. classic.

haitch in SYD (haitch), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

Destroy: "Tonight's The Night."

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

"The Motown Song" is his best song.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Ha: I already started this thread, and the answers were almost exactly the same, right down to the boy-oy-oy. Perhaps I should rethink my whole ILM-isn't-as-good-anymore theory.

In the spirit of more efficient duplication:

In the video it is the sunset "golden hour" and he is naturally backlit on a rooftop and he gets that great hair-halo effect where the edges of his coif are luminous and transparent!
-- nabisco (--...), November 4th, 2002. (nabisco) (link)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

"Young Turks" - never liked that one much, as far as techno-Rod goes. That keyboard melody in the chorus irritated me for some reason (hated it even more when it eventually resurfaced in "Walk Of Life" coupla years later. But the memory of Catherine O'Hara flouncing around as "Brooke Shields" brings a smile to my face nonetheless.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

When this song came out, I flipped over it in extreme way, but it really was a one-off. I remember buying his next single hoping for more of the same and being quite disappointed. I'm not sure Rod Stewart has ever sounded so good to me before or since.

CALLUM BENN THOMPSON, Monday, 20 March 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

After hearing "Baby Jane" this weekend I'm having trouble picking betwixt the two.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 20 March 2006 22:51 (twenty years ago)

isn't this a slightly new-wavey Sultans of Swing?

wally glover, Monday, 20 March 2006 23:24 (twenty years ago)

After hearing "Baby Jane" this weekend I'm having trouble picking betwixt the two.

Watch the "Baby Jane" video and you'll decide very quickly.
