Holy fuck. The best metal's coming out Sweden?

rama lama, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Not exactly. If you live in Sweden, maybe you think the best metal is coming out of Serbia or Canada, maybe even Texas or Louisianna. I have high hopes for Iraq one of these days, too.

George the Animal Steele, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I liked Arch Enemy better three albums ago, when Angela was brand new. The one after that was a little too melodically sugary for me, and I'm just not feeling the new one. Maybe it deserves one more listen, but I don't know.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

I liked the first two albums. My reaction then was "Holy Fuck" but then...nah. They sure have power but something is missing these days. And guess what - there´s loads of other good bands in Sweden kickin´ their butt.

Yngve (Smokeybass), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

if arch enemy are the best metal i don't want no metal.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

I like the new one better than the last one, but Wages of Sin still rules hook-wise

still, I do fucking love this band

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

I dunno. I found once I was over the "wtf, a hot chick is singing like THAT?!", it got pretty boring.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

actually i just googled searched her and she's a bit odd looking, innit?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

I think when you like metal any woman in the building counts as hot*

*I say this as a guy who listens almost exclusively to metal

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Do I have a Doro Pesch for you!

George the Animal Steele, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Calling the Wild, Doro
From the Voice a few years ago

For all its boys-will-be-boys and boys-will-be-girls trappings, the '80s pop-metal explosion sure belched up its share of girls-can-be-boys. Who among us doesn't recall the rocking, hit-me-on-the-cock-with-a-hammer, major-label sounds of Phantom Blue, Smashed Gladys, Saraya, Femme Fatale, and Vixen? (Erm . . . just Lita Ford then?)
Or how about Warlock? From Germany and fronted by blond-tressed, leather-clad fantasy goddess Doro Pesch...will she sound the same, thereby appeasing old fans whose posters have long since curled at the edges, half-covered in thick dobbets of wrist-dispatched doob?

q would you hit that
a yes sir i would

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

If you want to hear an amazing female death metal singer try and find the Engraved In Black album by Acrostichon. I think they were Dutch. The album was on Modern Primitive Records. She was insane. Whoever she was. cool album. my favorite insane singer was dawn crosby though. (R.I.P., I won't forget you, dawn.)

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

q would you hit that
a yes sir i would but only if they keep shining that bright light in her face.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

The singer for Sinister sports a vag too, and their last album, Savage Or Grace, is even better than Wages Of Sin. Hope they put another one out soon!

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Honestly, the chick from Arch Enemy looks about as old as Doro. What's Doro? 45?

As for Arch Enemy's music, uhh, it sounds like everything else. If its the best metal that Sweden can offer (thank god it isn't), the whole country can just give up and start offering up more synth pop.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

I fell off the Sinister wagon without noticing - who put out Savage or Grace?

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

amon amarth are probably still my fave swedish death metal band. katatonia are still my fave rock band. period.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

and banana, if you say anything about katatonia's last album you will seriously harsh my mellow. save it for tomorrow when i have the energy.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

i wanna hear the new arch enemy. i am up for anything. i actually REALLY liked the last soilwork album.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

Savage Or Grace was on Nuclear Blast. And I, too, am breathlessly anticipating the next Amon Amarth disc. I saw them on tour a couple of years ago with Immortal.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Honestly, the chick from Arch Enemy looks about as old as Doro. What's Doro? 45?

If that's a 45 I'll eat my shoes. But I like people who appear unyoung and scary.

George the Animal Steele, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

Scott what is your position on the new Cave-In???!!!

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 29 September 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard it. I would like to hear it though. I am not a Cave-In expert. I only own one ep. i like it a lot. it's from when they went into their big dreamy pop phase. i never heard the last album that everyone hated.

I wanna hear that new Withered album too.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 September 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

This one is kind of a compromise between the one everyone hated and the one before that, which was the one "everyone" (=heads) loved. Lots of clean-sung, pretty metal-Vegasy vox: at first, I was pretty "gahh" and our mutual friend o'er there @ Red Flag agrees with that assessment, but I listened again while cooking a delicious Turkish stew tonight and rather enjoyed it - it's VERY mersh, but the melodies are kinda cool - the mall-emo feel is for me somewhat mitigated by how nice the song structures are: it's like a less "intense" (ie willfully corny) Tool, not meanin' to step on the toes of anybody left who still really digs Tool.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 29 September 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

If you want to hear an amazing female death metal singer try and find the Engraved In Black album by Acrostichon.

yeah, they were good. and dutch.

let us also speak of metal bands with female vocalists that blow arch enemy out the gulf of bothnia:

nuclear death
ludicra
holy moses (back in the day)
13

uhm. and then there's madder mortem, whose last album deadlands i really dug. burned it for a friend of mine who was a huge fear of god fan and figured he might dig it but his continued silence probably indicates otherwise.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 29 September 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

Hard to top Jennifer Miro of the Nuns, first album. Time to dig up all the vagina dentata fantasies, the frontwomen who fit the villainess in Phil Farmer's Blown. Yow.

George the Animal Steele, Thursday, 29 September 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

Tourettes!

moley (moley), Thursday, 29 September 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

That's Michelle Madden. She is the real deal, baby.

moley (moley), Thursday, 29 September 2005 06:07 (twenty years ago)

The new Arch Enemy's good, Scott, in an Iron Maiden way. They have lots of energy and ideas they cram in there.

rama lama, Thursday, 29 September 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

oh man s de g 13 is boring!

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 29 September 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Hey, 13 were my homiez!!!

Dudes! Why Didn't Anyone Tell Me That One Of My Best Friends From High School, Liz Buckingham, Is In Electric Wizard!!??

they were pioneers! actually, i don't have a problem with anyone thinking they were boring. i never did actually hear their actual album. i still have the first demo tape though. and i was at the first gig!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 September 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

you know what's really sad though, i still haven't heard the electric wizard album that liz plays on. i thought of pitching an interview with her to albert and calling it: My Best Friend From High School Became The Queen Of Doom Metal And All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

That Electric Wizard album is actually really really good (like all Electric Wizard, come to think of it). We Live is nothing but bangers.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Thursday, 29 September 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

13 is boring!

...?! i have no idea how to respond to this. i'll just treat it as some kinda "parallel dimensions" thing.

scott, i don't think 13's album ever came out. friend of mine was in touch with alicia back then and said there was some sort of LP recording done but that she got involved with mike williams (who is in jail at the moment for some sort of post-hurricane activites) and just sort of abandoned all things 13.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 29 September 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

i saw a full-length for sale on ebay once. i didn't know what it was though. maybe it was just a boot.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 September 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

might've been a boot of the 7"s and demos? along with nuclear death's planet cachexial the 13 lp's one of the unreleased (semi-released?) albums i'd like to hear most.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

incidentally mike & alicia are requesting snail mail to mike to keep his spirit up while he's on lockdown, anybody wants the jail address write me and I'll send it to you (though I'd guess e'eybody on this thread already has it)

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 29 September 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

John D's thing about Arch Enemy from LPTJ is still one of my favorite pieces of music writing, ever:

roxymuzak, Monday, 6 August 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

we are experiencing site problems at the moment! should be back up shortly tho. thanks Roxy!

J0hn D., Monday, 6 August 2007 03:45 (eighteen years ago)

one of the arch enemys is the new opeth guitarist, right?

Charlie Howard, Monday, 6 August 2007 04:31 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Fredrik Åkesson (now Opeth guitarist) played with Arch Enemy to replace Christoper Amott, who is now back.

roxymuzak, Monday, 6 August 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

And supposedly he has a signature ESP guitar?! Can't find a pic of it, though.

roxymuzak, Monday, 6 August 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm starting to think this ESP thing is a falsehood, which is a nonshocker, as the only source material I have is Wikipedia, lol. Does anyone know?

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

Was listening to Dead Eyes See No Future in van last night and drummer is like "I don't understand how these guys sing so LOW."

Haw!

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

haha. i don't understand how that chick doesn't fuck up her vocal chords.

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 16 August 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

Most death metal singers do, I think!

roxymuzak, Thursday, 16 August 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)

Tea, rest, lots of warming up. Also, there's that woman that teaches how to scream without hurting your vocal cords. The Art of the Screaming. She has DVDs.

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 16 August 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

Angela's screams are far less mechanical on the new album. She has really impressive range, but Doomsday Machine didn't exactly focus on that.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 16 August 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

I've always liked Angela better than Johann, whether she's using her full range or not. Her screaming is more... melodic, somehow.

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 16 August 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

that's right, she has a really detailed my space profile
