I really don't know which way ILM will go.....

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Salt n' Pepa 3 Destiny's Child 6

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Both unspeakably dire, but I'd have to go with Salt'n'Pepa if pressed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

haha

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

it's shit like that which gives me some faith in the world, really

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Salt'n'Pepa are fun but this isn't even close. "Jumpin' Jumpin'", "Say My Name", "Bug a Boo" and "Bills Bills Bills" are individually worth more than S'n'P's whole output. (Tho I still wish I could've named my daughter Spinderella).

Don King of the Mountain (noodle vague), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

'Shoop' is underloved.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

The track to "Push It" is way better than any DC stuff, but DC were a more important addition to their stuff, and there's more of it.

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

prefer Salt & Pepa because I like their lyrics better, a lot better really, which is pretty key for me - and also when they pair with En Vogue you get some proto-DC warbling on top of it = both worlds in one!

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Okay, calling En Vogue "proto-DC" offends almost every sensibility in my being and I LIKE Destiny's Child!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Um, they kinda are, though?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Why TS on these two? I don't see the similarities.

Confounded (Confounded), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Hm....a tough one. "Whattaman" vs "Bootylicious."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Um, they kinda are, though?

Sure... except for that they AREN'T, unless being a group of women who sing in harmony makes you the proto version of another group whose entire milieu is orthoganol to yours.

En Vogue are coming from a doo-wop/soul perspective while Destiny's Child is coming from a hip-hop perspective and it's very evident in their choices of cover songs, the melodic lines and arrangements of their music, and their overall video images. Positing otherwise indicates to me that you haven't really followed either of them all that closely.

(To answer the question: Salt 'N Pepa.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Destiny's Child sings in harmony?

SNP's "Expression" owns every other song mentioned here so far.

Rich (Rich), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Destiny's Child sings in harmony?

Datapoints to support my thesis are coming in from all angles!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

You're right, I'm thoroughly retarded, tragically incapable of sarcasm and hyperbole. There's another "datapoint" or three.

It's always amused me that when DC lip synch live, it's the harmonized parts. They just can't, uh, get it together. That's what I find most offensive about the En Vogue comparison.

Rich (Rich), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Push It is better than most groups' entire recording careers, so Salt'n'Pepa!

I like Bootylicious tho.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

I thought of En Vogue as having some pretty decent ties to the hip-hop of their day - hence the S&P colloboration, hence the comparison! There are other points of comparison too I'd say, beyond "group of singing black women" - point taken about differences in image, but I'd counter that you gotta adjust for history, no? Or no, it's not like I'm eager to go to war about this, but I'd say "proto" only suggests that if there's a cultural analog for DC circa '92, it'd be En Vogue. Who were of course the Klymaxx of their day.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

DC owe a lot more to SWV and Mary J. Blige than they do to En Vogue.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Yes - you're right

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

man you gotta hit the books if you're gonna say shit about Destiny's Child when Dan's in the house

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

ts - glenn braggs vs. roy williams

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

DC owe a lot more to SWV and Mary J. Blige than they do to En Vogue

While I agree, I doubt that the girls of DC would.

Rich (Rich), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

While I agree, I doubt that the girls of DC would.

That's because the girls of DC are suffering from massive self-delusions.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

Not even close. "Push It", "Whattaman", "Shoop", "Champagne", "Let's Talk About Sex" - INSTANT PARTY.

Destiny's Child have some good songs, but NONE as good as "Let's Talk About Sex", frankly.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

It's kind of crazy how easily and completely SnP pwn DC (and I really like DC).

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

THANK YOU BN for protecting my honor (& saying what I would've said, albelt w/ more clarity and less telling Dang to go suck it)!

BTW, Dan:

En Vogue: 1990
SWV: 1992
Mary J. Blige: 1992

(Sinker to thread to tell me to suck it.)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Let's Talk About Sex is annoying. Really I think DC have a higher number of excellent singles.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm sort of fond of 'Do You Want Me' though, especially the dorkish guy's exclaimations in the middle.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Thank you, Daver, for disproving BN's point for me!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh whatever, Dan! CLEARLY I was going for the EV --- SWV / MJB --- DC Frogger jump. SUCK IT!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

from my ignorant side of the atlantic, d-c appeared to be 'the new tlc' circa 1998. swv only had like one hit song here, though.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

DC = (SWV + MJB) / Changing Faces

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I think DC are really equidistant between EV and mid 90s 'new jill swingers' like SWV, Mary J etc. TLC would be closer to SnP purely on the basis that their songs feature rapping by Left Eye. I need to factor in Smooth and Blaque Ivory somehow...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

Total, SWV, Changing Faces, 702, Jade... the heritage of Destiny's Child isn't very hard to trace, guys.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

(Maybe you need to have been listening to a ton of early-to-mid-90s girlgroup RnB to see this.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

yeah, none of those bands were as big, in the uk, as tlc or mjb, iirc.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

TLC and MJB were bigger in the US too, surely.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

dunno, but i'd only heard swv of that lot, so...

N_RQ, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

Jade had a couple of hits here and were GREAT. I still have 'I Wanna Love You' on cassingle!

Brownstone also part of DC heritage too I think.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

as for the original question I kind of can't decide. 'Push It' is the best out of all the songs either group did though.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

SNP's music came off as actually having, oh, I dunno, personality. DC are like talking dolls.

Je4nn3 ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

ABSOLUTELY Brownstone!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

SP had 'push it' and spindarella. winner.

katie, a princess (katie, a princess), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it'd be too inaccurate to say that En Vogue were the DC of their day, though yeah musically they have little in common.

Anyway yeah, neither group is on 100 percent of the time (or 50%, for that matter), but classic SnP ("Shoop," "Whatta Man," "Push It," "None of Your Business," "Giddy Up") probably takes down classic DC ("Bills, Bills, Bills," "Lose My Breath," "Say My Name")

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

also, since I doubt any of them will be mentioned again on this board for months/years to come, I'll say that I'd take Changing Faces' "G.H.E.T.T.O.U.T.," Total's "Can't U See" and Jade's "Don't Walk Away" over anything by either SnP or DC.
