The Associates - "Glamour Chase/Perhaps" - C/D?

I just bought this because it was used at the record store; haven't listened yet. I don't have any other Associates albums, although I've heard (and like) "The Affectionate Punch" and "White Car in Germany." I realize now that it's a late one, and Alan Rankine's not involved. Is it bad? Should I try and hear the earlier stuff first, lest my feelings be tainted by exposure to subpar material? It wouldn't be the first time...

Perhaps is much better than might be guessed -- "Breakfast" alone is a killer, but the whole thing holds together well for such a chaotically created album. The contemporary BBC sessions were even more gone but I was surprised and pleased at how much I enjoyed it.

The Glamour Chase is more of a dog's breakfast in the end, but I recall certain songs standing out, especially the Yello collaborations.

That said, if you HAVEN'T heard the full albums of The Affectionate Punch, Fourth Drawer Down and Sulk yet, um, run, don't walk. Now. And THEN play that double-pack later. ;-)

Thanks... I'll proceed with caution.

What Ned said -- w/ the added observation that "Those First Impressions" is one of Billy's best moments.

Perhaps is still a fine album, though well below the standard of the earlier triptych, you could probaly get by with the singles from it. Billy's still in great voice but he sorely missed Rankines songwriting skills. Conversely Rankines solo material from around the same period has some fine songs, especially the Sandman but he's no great shakes as a singer.

Sadly haven't heard the Glamour chase yet.

Glamour Chase is fantastic - Set Me Up, Because You Love and You'd Be The One are up there with anything they ever did. I keep meaning to write something on this recd.
