*head explodes*

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

GUYS DO YOU THINK K-OS HAS A SHOT AT ANY OF THESE

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Divine Brown has really come a long way since her Hollywood days.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

that Divine Brown album is some great not-quite-neo-soul shiznit

yuengling participle (rotten03), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Yeah? I should hear it.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

That Maestro/Infinite/Gowan track is on the Maestro "Best of" Orange just put out. The track's not very good, and sounds exactly like you think it would.

Vic Funk, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Video for it available here: http://www.orangerecordlabel.com/videos.asp

I'm afraid to look.

Vic Funk, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

wow. it is awful.
I might be related to someone on the orange roster.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

i realize maestro's nom is totally just lip service doled out in exchange for paving the way or whatever but the fact that he's some sort of godfather to canadian hip-hop ends up saying more about canada's sorry legacy than anything else -- dude didn't even put out one good album! one classic single, a few other good ones, and after that, tumbleweeds. (fuck you "conductin' thangs"!)

this coming from someone who has a warm place in his heart for "just swinging", ffs. i'd put proof or masia one over this clown.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Also, K'Naan in not being very good shockah! (i liked his single, but the album stinks)

Huk-L (Huk-L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Masia One got shafted. PRICKS.

donut hallivallerieburtonelli omg lol (donut), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

What are Masia One's other tracks like? I liked that one single that got into MM rotation, but it sounded like whoever mixed the thing forgot to turn up her raps, which, like, defeats the purpose of doing hip-hop.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

mark, c'mon! Symphony in Effect was brill!

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

first tape i ever bought was maestro fresh-wes!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

I still know all the words to "Let Your Backbone Slide".

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

What are Masia One's other tracks like?

"Split Second Time" is the standout track (and that video is CLASSIC! Especially the phalanx of Kogal), but the rest of Mississauga is mostly pleasant lower key r&b/hip-hop with about three or four more upbeat shakers.. nothing too distinct, but certainly a sleeper album of last year (and hence this year's awards(?))

donut hallivallerieburtonelli omg lol (donut), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Maestro was my first not-with-parents concert in Windsor, ON. he killed.

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

Symphony in Effect was my first self-purchased tape too. It's quite good, more than justa couple singles. Maestro had me all the way up to "Fine Tune da Mic" and I bought Naaah, Dis Kid Can't Be From Canada?!!, but that was a mistake.

Gregory T (tubesocks), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

Maestro was killing it in '89.

On another note, I never understood why the euphemism "urban" is employed in reference to hip-hop, soul and R 'n B.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

man, now i gotta find my Symphony-era t-shirt. lotsa neon on that bitch

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

Come on, Metropia!

I had to go listen to the Gowan original to make sure they hadn't sped up his voice.

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

no way dude, Gowan did that at the time.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

anyone wanna join me in a little bit of "Let Your Backbone Slide?"

well, alright, i'll get 'er started...

Let ya back bone slide
Let it slip
Let the rhythm rip
While my lyrics leave my lips

As a counterpoint to 'country', I think. (black people live in cities, white people live on farms and all)

Cadence Weapon wz robbed!

"As a counterpoint to 'country', I think. (black people live in cities, white people live on farms and all)"

Someone should re-think that designation. I happen to know for a fact that black people also live in the country. I've been there, and I seen 'em.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

A universe without light is lightless, that's why I always take time to write this!

Let ya back bone slide

Dude, that's Drop The Needle, and you know it.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Wait, Kim, you mean Gowan sped up his voice to sound like that? Or just that he could sing that high?

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

Isn't he in Styx now?

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Definetely "Drop the Needle". The only part I really remember from "Drop the Needle" is:

"I wear a black tuxedo
A black tuxedo
A black, black, black (oh my god)
A black tuxedo with a cumberbund, damn"

Gregory T (tubesocks), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, he sings for Styx now. I heard that they play "Criminal Mind" when they tour.

Sundar (sundar), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

oh shit! you're right! hahaha

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

well i do remember (kind of vividly) seeing this thing where they were talking to him "at work in the studio" where he was demonstrating one of his production tricks, apparently because he was still dazzled with the technology, where they would record his vocal in normal mode and then with the touch of a button could separate it into a higher and lower register creating a perfect (but faked) harmony. and damn if that isn't all i can ever hear in most of his songs ever since - most notably "Cosmetics". but i'm also amused how one time that he didn't use this method (on "Moonlight Desires") he just subsititutes Jon Anderson's real high pitched voice to recreate the exact same effect! i think i mentioned elsewhere once that it took me years to even notice the Anderson guest spot on that, and well, it's no wonder.

-- jaymc (jmcunnin...), September 28th, 2005.

not really, i don't even have a real album! (until nov. 8)

but yeah, i opened for k'naan in toronto and they had african drums and he is seriously milking that 'whoa totally from africa srsly like me' thing.
