are they good?

i read this, is it to be believed?

Jane was Germany's most popular group during the 1970's and after hearing this debut album it's easy to understand why. They play a kind of progressive, melodic, hard rock that has no equal. Breathtaking guitar solos, powerful keyboards, strong polished arrangements are all Jane trademarks. This is classic Krautrock.

THEY SUCK.

Well, the "Lady" album sucks at least. I was tricked into buying it by the crazy cover, Brain logo and the "recorded at Conny's studio" credit. Beware.

i think if i had a daughter, i'd call her Jane. There aren't really any Janes around.

argh, but then she'd be Jane Frame and that would be just wrong.

Ha ha, really? Jane Frame is a great name.

I think Jane is okay - if it's the word "krautrock" you're responding to, I would take care to hear something first. They're not that 'progressive', either - it's more heavy rock. The first one should probably be in the same genre as the first Scorpions album. There's a bit of a Pink Floyd-y feel to some of the mid-period records.

i knew it wasn't krautrock. just because it's from germany in the 70s doesn't mean it sounds like Can. so is it heavy rock like sabbath, zep, cream, etc?

The one I have (4th album I guess) is sort of in a heavy rock vein but with some sub-Emerson B3 playing and vocals that sound like a cross between Peter Gabriel and Steve Winwood.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

that sounds rather... terrible

Except for the part about the singing, right?

Yeah, these guys did suck pretty bad. Jane III is the only one I've heard all the way through, friend of mine swears the earlier couple have moments, but ehhh...

Actually, that description I made doesn't sound too terrible to me on the surface. It's just that they have no songs or something. I was going to YSI a track but it's just not even worth it. I'd be curious to hear the first album though because I could see how they might be slightly better a few albums earlier.

Gäa (In English Gaia) was a suitably cosmic band of German deep-space voyagers who released one brilliant album (Auf Der Bahn Zum Uranus - On The Road To Uranus) to absolutely no acclaim, then broke up. "Alraunes Alptraum"

Auf Der Bahn zu Uranus. Reminds me of the "Groove Tube." And now, something new from Uranus. Brown number nine.
