If we're talking about the U.S. here, the mp3 phones available are pathetic.

Are you avoiding the Nanon?

You should be avoiding the "Nanon," perhaps in favor of the "Nano".

not necessarily but the nano has its own thread. also i dont really need 4 gig of space

watch out for the unwanted gaps, if you like your mixtapes tracked then you will get lots of lovely spaces spoiling the flow.

sure, you can mess about with the files etc, but i was never aware of this prior to my purchase, hence i moved over to a sony flash player. gapless playback .. watch out for it.

Here's a comparison of about a dozen.

five months pass...
I got my Samsung 1 GB YP-T7 last summer for $140, and I use it every day. I love the simplicity of how it works like a hard drive when transferring files to and from the computer, no extra software needed.

I read an article way back in 1994 that said solid state technology was the future. Wish I'd had money to invest.

Magnetic hard drives should become extinct soon enough. Why they're limiting the growth of flash drives to such a slow rate is confounding, as they can do much, much better than the standard 1-4 GB. I guess it's like price-fixing -- manufacturers of computers and gadgets agree to incrementally inch along technology to ensure consumers will need to upgrade at least every few years.

This little sucker should light a fire under their butts. Once people know it's possible, they'll wonder whay the hell they're dicking around with 1 MB:

BUSlink's 64GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive PRO 2 Series

We're not exactly sure when BUSlink launched a 64GB -- that's gigabyte, yes -- flash drive, but it's right there on their site, plain as day, handily and smugly smacking down even the largest of flash drives, available for purchase for $5,000. Apparently they've also got a 32GB (not shown) and 16GB drive for $1,500, but seriously, if this isn't some kind of sick joke catering to our obsession with solid state memory, you know exactly which one it is we'll be promptly devouring as soon as we can sell off enough excess gear and internal organs to afford it. You can run an OS off a flash drive, right? Ok, good.

Is there fricking anything out there that will work on a Mac that isn't some sort of iPod?

Yeesh.

that and the fact that the player hates most tags (and only displays the track titles when it doesnt) pretty much puts it in the "destroy" category, but hey, it was cheap

this looks good (drag and drop, optional sync, replaceable battery)
