He's playing Edinburgh in November. I can get a run there in back by car.

What kind of stuff is he playing these days?
I love his late 60s/early 70s stuff.
But what is he like now?

Should I go?

I've never seen him live, but I get the impression that he's kinda past his prime. I've never liked any of his more current releases - he sounds sort of watered down. Still, he's a good pianist and will probably have a good rhythm section, so I'm sure it won't be bad or anything.

Go while you can. He was very ill last year.

(Andrew Hill's not doin' so well, either, btw.)

I'd say if it's him with a small group it's probably worth going, a trio would be ideal. No idea what he's up to these days.

Yeah, definitely go and see him, I saw him a few months ago and it was a trio which was indeed a good setup. Obviously his playing is a lot different from the Coltrane days, a little too "painterly" for some tastes, even mine most of the time, but it was working for me at the live show. The best moment was some kind of Arabian song called "Oasis" or something like that, featuring an excellent drawn out arco bass solo from Charnet Moffett. I wish I could remember who was on drums.

only if you like stacked fourths!

But I don't think he stacks the fourths like he used to.

I saw him with Avery Sharpe a few years ago, and I thought he sounded fine. I find him a bit samey overall; he approaches everything kind of the same. But I'd say catch him while you can--he's amazing, really. Not many of those guys left.

I know it's trivial but one thing that's staying with me is a deep chuckle he let out after introducing one of the songs.
