This is a tough one, but I say Angel Witch because if you put Angel Witch's best (the first one, obviously) against Witchfinder's best (either of the first two, if memory serves), there's a clear winner.

Witchfynde are a pretty good bet too, but not Axe Witch alas.

And this isn't counting the front runners of the movement who made it to the present relatively intact.
You could even throw Girlschool in with them and their albums were consitantly a cut above those of the Witchbands. They tended to be lumped together with Motorhead though the drummer was the sister of the skinsman in Angelwitch.
And yes, the unfairly overlooked Demon who nobly tried to be literary and didn't get much cooperation for their trouble.
Further down the pile, the Cloven Hoofs, the A II Z's, the Quartzes, the Raven's and the Vardises. Hey, Steve Zodiac was a great name! "Boogie Blitz," "200 MPH!"

"If I were king I'd rock n'roll, I'd wear a crown of leather and studs".
Worthy of Udo Dirkschneider himself. George, do you like Praying Mantis? Demon were odd, they went into an intellectual phase but were ignored to the point where the main songwriter literally dropped dead. A la punk, most of these bands had 1 or 2 great singles in them and lost the plot when it came to putting an album together. Apart from Angel Witch anyway.

Just bought 'Angel Witch' earlier today and am playing it now. Was given to understand that it's a proto-doom artefact. First two tracks (ie I am liveblogging) don't really convey that. OK track three 'White Witch', now I'm getting it a bit more. Haha! NWOBHM take on Black Widow basically. This is dope.

Noticed how flimsy the vinyl is when I turned it over. Huh. 'Free Man' is some epic bullshit. In a good way and all but I could imagine them gurning through an acoustic version of this, in another era.

Second best song I own with the title 'Angel Of Death'. Duh.
In conclusion I fuck with this LP.

Angel Witch are supporting Orange Goblin at the Camden Underworld on December 20th! Although it's Kevin Heybourne + some Rise Above people rather than Dave Hogg and Kev "Skids" Riddles. Should still be awesome though.

I spin tracks of Witchfinder General's Friends of Hell pretty much everytime I DJ.
But I've been in a "witch" band for the last 12 yeras so of course I'm gonna rep for these guys.

Been listening to Angel Witch. He has a really pretty voice and I love "Atlantis". I think the John Martin cover art was maybe too grand for the sound of the album though.
