Finally! Someone with a whole lot more credibility than me said it. Can we bury it now?

from an interview with david berman:

Is indie rock dead? Does it matter?
DB: If by indie rock you mean independently produced and distributed music, then no. If by indie rock you mean the barely overground music listened to by college age and college educated white humans in the nineteen nineties. then yes, it's dead.

Thats a pretty poor definition of indie rock (the second one).

J0hn F3ll Ry4n, founding member of Excepter and No-Neck Blues Band alumnus, imagines a post-noise situation: "It's not like no-wave where everyone is reducing things to black and white," he says. "The current scene is much more omnivorous and exploratory. Check out the change Black Dice pulled off: straightedge free jazz to LSD orgy music in less than three moves? Indie rock died flat in 1994 and everybody knows that, viscerally. It's not just a New York thing; there are noise scenes everywhere. The entire planet is a noise scene. You don't have to ask why people are making visionary apocalyptic music right now. Drop It Like It's Hot is a noise record!"

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 14 October 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Thank you poly. People who talk like this, who ask things like "is x genre dead?" or speculate what the next big aural movement will be honestly make me want to stop talking and thinking about music and go play in a field. For christ's sake, it's all so insular and speculative and propagated by people who on a deep level do not like music. If you're worried about clubs you can belong to so you can feel welcomed, join the fucking shriners.

The Shriners won't take baptized Catholics, no matter how much I renounce it.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 14 October 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

O.G. indie rock as i understood it was really concentrated along the coastal colleges, no?
i mean it differed from hardcore or something which had rigid uniformity on its side, and penetrated lot further. but as its originators gave up on it, it finally reached the flyover rest of the country, and flourished more than ever, in a way.
but there was a little gap there, and those OG types "moved on" to electronica, free jazz, flamenco, or something? thats how i recall it...
and now at least today everyone can agree on folk/americana *whew*

So Joe Jonas reads Stereogum and Pitchfork? He's also into early Elvis Costello records, so it's not entirely surprising.

Indie Rock died when the first kid said....

Well, no, it's not exactly an indie label, because it's more like a 'boutique' label owned by ---------, but it'll be marketed like an indie record, and all the guys there are really cool, and they're really into our stuff, so it's not like being signed to a major at all

sonofstan, Saturday, 8 May 2010 09:39 (sixteen years ago)

Indie as a term, in its original meaning, died when the likes of Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan started dominating the UK indie lists.
