Mine (no order):

1. Daniel Johnston - Early Recordings v. 1 (a compilation of two releases, but still - it's that good)

2. Wu-Tang Forever

3. Tupac - All Eyez on Me

4. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

5. Clash - Sandinista! (would be a double album if released in this day)

I sure am glad someone asked this question.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

it's an ilm list thread, i'm v.v. excited : D

gear (gear), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

It's not just a ILM list thread. It's a list thread on a subject that hasn't really been adequately tackled on ILM. I'm really curious to see how people on ILM handled a tough new question like this.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

gosh where to begin, many double albums are in release, lol : D

Defining a double album as an album that was double on its original release:

1. Genesis: The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
2. Yes: Tales From Topographic Oceans
3. Prefab Sprout: Jordan...The Comeback
4. ELO: Out Of The Blue
5. Stevie Wonder: Songs In The Key Of Life
6. Kate Bush: Aerial
7. Brainpool: Junk - a Rock Opera
8. Donna Summer: Bad Girls
9. Todd Rundgren: Something/Anything
10.The Beatles: The Beatles

"All Things Must Pass" was excluded because it is a triple album

It's Alive by the Ramones

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Isn't almost every album released nowadays a double album, since the advent of CDs? Any album longer than 60 minutes is going to be a double album, and that puts almost every rap CD and a lot of the rock/pop CDs released in the past 15 years in the double album category.

So I propose:
1) no albums released after 1990
2) no live albums

Anyway, some of my faves:

Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime
Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music
Swans - Children of God
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
PiL - Second Edition

As you can probably tell I'm no prog rock fan, but I've still got to hand it to Pink Floyd's The Wall. The King Kong of concept double LPs...

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

FSOL - Lifeforms
Autechre - Tri Repetae ++ (Even if disc 2 is a comp of two EP's)
Pink Floyd - The Wall

And, um... more shit I can't remember right now, even though I own several double/triple albums. I hate Wu-Tang Forever with passion, though.

Josh Witkowski (braineater), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Velvet Underground, Live 1969
Kevin Coyne, Marjory Razorblade

We Buy a Hammer For Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

All double albums are good, they are all my favorite!

SONNY, Wednesday, 7 December 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

I was really hoping Stencil's answer would be the one folks were looking for. I'm so disenfranchised now.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

So I propose:
1) no albums released after 1990

No offense, but isn't this qualification simply going to limit lists to the same double LPs over and over? Why not qualify it in this respect?

1) The title in question could have been relased on compact disc, but it also must have been released as an actual double LP (two chunks of vinyl)

This way new records are allowed, but not just any old 60-minute compact disc.

I'll submit one:
USA Is A Monster's Wohaw

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

1) The title in question could have been relased on compact disc, but it also must have been released as an actual double LP (two chunks of vinyl)

This would also include almost every rap album released in the last 15 years.

Double albums used to mean something - they weren't frequently released, when someone put one out, it was a big deal. Not anymore. I'd say, if it was released after 1990, it would have to be 2 CDs (e.g. Joggers & Smoggers, Wu Tang Forever) to compare.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard Wahowa yet, but I don't doubt its excellence. I'm a big USA Is A Monster fan, especially live. I saw them tons of times in 2003/2004, and have some really good live recordings from that period. Epic length sets.
