Lilys - "Everything Wrong is Imaginary"
Release date: February 21, 2006

Now, in their umpteenth configuration, Kurt Heasley and his newest batch of Lilys return in 2006 with a new album of recordings entitled "Everything Wrong is Imaginary". A departure of sorts (imagine that) from previous material, "...Imaginary" returns to the guitar driven glory of early works in spots, while retaining the pious whimsy of the late 90's Lilys for good measure. Quincy Jones worship, pop ridiculum, beatbox breakdown all included, all guided by the able production and contribution of Michael Mussmano...

"Hey guys, I've heard of this thing called electroclash, what do you think?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:18 (twenty years ago)

considering I'm of the firm (if admittedly narrow) opinion that Lilys mk. 1 ('92-'95) was by an extreme amount the best phase of their career and that I've only cared a fraction of the amount about their material since, I hope they're not teasing with that "return to guitar-driven glory" description.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 9 January 2006 17:21 (twenty years ago)

xpost , otm. "beatbox breakdown." ...yeah, I really didn't know how to receive this.

agreed about the regard for their post-'95 work & return to guitar glory, because I didn't mind Precollection, but that's mostly all it came down to.
"Will My Lord Be Gardening," great song, but I'm not really aching another one of those.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 9 January 2006 18:13 (twenty years ago)

lilys please go away.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 9 January 2006 18:15 (twenty years ago)

i kind of admire the lilys for still existing.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 9 January 2006 18:49 (twenty years ago)

When they sounded like the Kinks, the Lilys were the best of all the Kinky bands. I'd bet that anyone who's ever spent any time listening to them -- no matter how long ago -- could, immediately upon being prompted, whistle at least half a dozen of their melodies.

Derek Krissoff (Derek), Monday, 9 January 2006 21:13 (twenty years ago)

*hums John Cage's "Silence"*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 January 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

not from their Kinks phase, though.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 9 January 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)

i could probably whistle the entire 'better can't make your life better' album. not 'the 3 way' though, which is crap.

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 9 January 2006 22:34 (twenty years ago)

the album, not the fact i couldn't whistle it

well, duh, of course. that's the best era of lilys. unfortunately, for those of us who live in philadelphia, especially in the 10 years since "history of amazing letdowns", have witnessed its effects on the more pop-oriented groups. ive seen many bands attempt their own "ginger, part two" and to me, the lilys influence/diaspora/viselike deathgrip/whathaveyou is depressing. im over it. there's a lot more interesting pop coming out of groups like the spinto band, bc camplight and the a-sides.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 9 January 2006 22:53 (twenty years ago)

direct me to some of these "Ginger, Part Two"s please.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:02 (twenty years ago)

The 3 way is the best bubblegum prog album i've ever heard. not crap !

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:47 (twenty years ago)

it's the only lilys release i don't like!

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:48 (twenty years ago)

They're playing ATP.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:50 (twenty years ago)

brad, your old band was eight gajillion times better than lilys could ever hope to be!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:50 (twenty years ago)

thanks maria ! didn't know you were a steaming coils fan : )

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:53 (twenty years ago)

oh, totally. ive been following SC around for years. but seriously... echo orbiter covering medicine? the universe just folded onto itself. mind. blown.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:54 (twenty years ago)

weird innit ?

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:55 (twenty years ago)

brad, your old band was eight gajillion times better than lilys could ever hope to be!

Y'know, this is incredibly true.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:56 (twenty years ago)

Whoa Ned, you must truly despise the lilys.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Maybe Damon and Kurt should just collaborate and call themselves the Swillies.

Dom iNut (donut), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 00:14 (twenty years ago)

BAHAHAHA

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 00:24 (twenty years ago)

The horrible thing is I could imagine the same thing happening in 1993 with two different sets of people.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 00:47 (twenty years ago)

brad, your old band was eight gajillion times better than lilys could ever hope to be!

he wasn't in the sugarplastic that long, was he?

caspar (caspar), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 00:50 (twenty years ago)

Here I go, out the door, of my apartment before, I miss my train and there's no way that is happening...

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 01:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm listening right now, and it's immediately my favorite Lilys record to come out in years and years (not that that's a huge feat... but this one is actually good).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 01:50 (twenty years ago)

the song sample on the myspace page is not good.

keyth (keyth), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Take another listen, keyth? sometimes Lilys tunes take a few listens to get into.
...but..yeah, sometimes they just don't take.
Well, anyway, I do like "With Candy." And I like the sound of the added today "Knocked On..."
Good expectations for the album, which is queued up at 300..eh.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, still undecided, but you can't judge a Lilys tune quickly. I almost missed the boat on Precollection, which sounded like a disaster for the first few weeks but might actually be my favorite album of theirs now, though I've played both versions of Better to death so it's hard to have perspective. The (misleading) Kinks comparisons really need to die.

dlp9001, Thursday, 12 January 2006 02:04 (twenty years ago)

"A Diana's Diana" is a total disaster of a song. "Where the Night Goes" blows. Same for "O.I.C.U.R."

I don't like this record much at all.

They only sounded like the Kinks on one album, and that was like ten years ago.

don weiner (don weiner), Thursday, 12 January 2006 02:14 (twenty years ago)

What, did Brad join bro for a short Sugarplastic stint? Hmm. I'd take lots of Medicine over bootgazer-era Lilys, but I'm with Brad on The 3-Way. I was about to say it's about composition and not style -- seven minutes of "Socs Hip," all through-composed wind-arounds and lovely switchbacks and breaks -- but that "bubblegum prog" line makes me take it back: there's something lovable in the style as well, and the range of cobbled-together 60s pastiche is a damned good way of approaching that songwriting.

I'm listening to the new one for the first time, but it's gonna take me a while to have much of an opinion -- it's neither blowing me away or convincing me to turn it off. Guitars yes, but more smooth-and-sparkly than overdrive.

nabiscothingy, Friday, 20 January 2006 07:51 (twenty years ago)

I doubt anyone will care other than people who are already fans of the band, but after a week or so the hooks on Everything Wrong Is Imaginary are starting to resolve and it's sounding pretty good. Hard to describe, as it's kind of all over the place: a little shoegaze, a lot of psych, a touch of fake disco (on "A Diana's Diana" which, contrary to rumor, isn't a disaster), a handful of drone, and strangely conceived production that sometimes veers a little more lo-fi than I'd prefer.

One song sounds a bit like Blur from 13, another has a riff that isn't too far from Spacemen 3's "Amen" and the album ender is awfully Game Theory/Loud Family. I guess it's closest to Precollection in overall feel, and will probably be just as succesful. For better or for worse, Kurt seems to be the current master of great indie rock that initially sounds blah.

dlp9001, Sunday, 29 January 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

i listened to the two new clips on the myspace page and it's still pretty mediocre and i like 'precollection' quite a bit. it's alright though, pas/cal will write all of the songs i wish the lilys would write.

keyth (keyth), Monday, 30 January 2006 01:50 (twenty years ago)

This record is the best release/leak of 2006, hands down.

cdwill, Monday, 30 January 2006 06:41 (twenty years ago)

This record is pretty great. Some of the descriptions of it in this thread are so far off that I'm wondering if what I have is actually the new record...

cdwill, Monday, 30 January 2006 06:46 (twenty years ago)

Shit, that was all supposed to be in one post. Ah well.

cdwill, Monday, 30 January 2006 06:54 (twenty years ago)

"A Diana's Diana" is far and away the best Lilys song I've ever heard.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 00:14 (twenty years ago)

"A Diana's Diana" is the very first Lilys song I've heard (got it from your site, Matthewm thanks), so I had no expectations, and I LOVE it. Getting the rest of the album now, but after reading this thready it sounds like the rest has a different sound.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 04:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's really not a good indication of what the rest of the album sounds like, unfortunately.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 04:23 (twenty years ago)

"With Candy" is the best track on the record, imo

cdwill, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 04:35 (twenty years ago)

Anybody see the show last night? Or, more importantly, did anyone *record* the show last night?

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Thursday, 2 February 2006 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Stupid question, but how do you properly pronounce "Lilys" ?

Harpal (harpal), Friday, 3 February 2006 00:52 (twenty years ago)

a diana's diana is a bit like Vhs or Beta.

keyth (keyth), Friday, 3 February 2006 03:39 (twenty years ago)

...if VHS or Beta didn't sound like a bunch of lame-ass Cure remixes.

Lilys is pronounced like the plural of Lily.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 3 February 2006 04:11 (twenty years ago)

Oh man I don't dig VHS or Beta at all. Just another Duran Duran, and we already gots the Duran Duran.

BlastsOfStatic (BlastsofStatic), Friday, 3 February 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

anyways, it is clearly not the best thing the lilys have ever done but it is pretty good. i still think 'the tennis system' is the best lilys song.
