i know no one gives a rat's ass about non-grime UK garage nowadays, but...

...listen to this and try telling me it wouldn't be a monster chart smash with some major-label muscle behind it!

Mask - Hottie

Mask is an alias of UKG dons Agent X, under which they mostly churn out 4x4 remixes of R&B hits, bar the occasional original production... none of which come close to this sexy, slinky stomper from last year. I've been completely obsessed with "Hottie" recently, and I think it's too good to remain an obscure fringe thing, so... this is my attempt to make it slightly less obscure. give it a try!

biggle

grimeisshit, Tuesday, 14 March 2006 13:55 (twenty years ago)

why do they go under an assumed name?

The Man Without Shadow (Enrique), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 13:57 (twenty years ago)

who, Agent X? i'm not sure. it's the same story with Riplash & Sus a.k.a. Juicy Joints. their R&B remixes are unofficial so i'm thinking the aliases may be a cautionary measure against possible legal action - but then again, it's not like it's some big secret that Agent X are Mask, that info can be obtained from Discogs after all. the alias may also be an attempt to differentiate between production approaches, but i don't see much of a difference between the Agent X sound and the Mask sound really (except that Agent X were 2step most of the time and Mask tunes are always 4x4 garage).

Mind Taker (Mind Taker), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:10 (twenty years ago)

bah i can't download. anyone who wants to gmail me that, do feel free.

i loved the mask remix of 'goodies' last year.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:39 (twenty years ago)

i can and will gmail you the tune! there's also a very good Mask remix of Ciara's "1,2 Step", and the "Mask Organ Dub" of Chris Brown's "Run It" is hot.

Mind Taker (Mind Taker), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:41 (twenty years ago)

wow! those would be awesome too if you could...

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

ahh i never felt mask much, they just kinda bosh em out! them and the likes of timberland bootz and tremorefire dubz do occasionally get into good runs but its as hit and miss as it gets - right now tho the riddler records/control-s lot are totally smashing the rmx game i reckon.

as far as original material goes 'hottie' isnt one millionth as worthy as the kind of unfuckwitable stuff paleface and especially DELINQUENT have been coming up with over the last year or so, check this bunch:

'ghetto queen' feat shad
soundboy - never wanna say (delinq mix)
paleface / nina jayne - like a feather (og + delinq mix)
and of course
'my destiny' feat kcat

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

the real sleeper pick i've got my eye on is dexplicit!

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 15:46 (twenty years ago)

ahh i never felt mask much, they just kinda bosh em out!

partially i agree, there really are TOO MANY identikit Mask boshers. but i still think that, every once in a while they, they hit the right spot. another great one i forgot to mention: their remix of Usher's "Confessions".

Riddler Records can be good (the Dragon remix of Gusto's "Disco's Revenge" is awesome, and totally ravey too!). but sadly i'm not feeling the Control-S stuff I've heard.

soundboy - never wanna say (delinq mix)
'my destiny' feat kcat

both of these are fabolous, agreed. Delinquent's remix of Kelly Marie Taylor's "Get Up, Get Out" is killer too. as for Dexplicit... i don't know much, but i must say i'm not too keen on "Bullacake" - it reminds me of all those '02-era half-arsed sub-DJ Narrows darkside 4x4 tunes.

btw, rtcotm - what do you think of the Juicy Joints remix of Mariah's "We Belong Together"?

Mind Taker (Mind Taker), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

dunno if this fits in here, and its a bit old, but ive only just got hold of it - skandalous unlimited feat carly bond - my life.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

haha the intro to the vip mix of 'my life' is the craziest shit ever!

mt i just checked juno for the mariah rmx - the juicy joints rmx sounds a bit too heavyhanded 4x4 for me but the confusingly named 'mask 4x4 mix' on the b-side does sound pretty good! (they probably mixed up their clips innit.) rmxing the really played out tunes makes it that much harder to love too, perhaps harshly of me to say; i appreciate a bit of rubbihs that muhc more when theyve gone out of thier way to rmx pretty ricky or something. case in point: the control-s rmx of ray j's 'one wish'

'bullacake' is more like a pointer to where dexplicit's head is at sometimes - i was thinking more of his rng-ier ones like 'one night stand' thru to the new ones on richie vibe vee last week and partic the very freestyley 'are u ready' with gigglez, which u can now hear on his myspace i believe. not strictly oldskool ukg i know, but also not quite ur usual rng either more importantly.

rtcotm (mwah), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 17:27 (twenty years ago)

"rmxing the really played out tunes makes it that much harder to love too"

ah, that's where we differ (within the last several months i've discovered FOUR different remixes of Destiny's Child's "Lose My Breath" that i've enjoyed a lot!). still, i WAS amazed at how much i fell in love with that remix considering "We Belong Together" was my second or third fave single of '05.

(and yes, i checked - those rascals @ juno did indeed mix up the clips.)

Mind Taker (Mind Taker), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the tip on "Hottie" - I missed this one, yes I like it!

Paul (scifisoul), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Re Dexplicit: "Might Be" and his remix of "U Got Me" are also pretty great. "Bullacake" is dull.

31g (31g), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

i've been to the Riddler Records' myspace and found a stream of their 1xtra showcase ! awesome.

rtccc (mwah), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

i know paul scifi can feel me on midnight circus

rtccc (mwah), Thursday, 28 September 2006 10:09 (nineteen years ago)

"Midnight Circus" is very good, yes! tho MJ's funk step remix of Carmen Reece is still my fave "soulful" 2step track from this year. that kinda stuff is probably what the scene needs to regain feet, i just hope it doesn't signal the end of Todd Edwards' clones coz i LOVE Todd Edwards' clones! i could listen to that shit all day. and i often do! my favourite mix from my favourite label this year: DJ Solution's mix on the MRP Records site. warning: heavy on TE & TE-related sounds.

Wideboys have been KILLER form this year! especially:
Project Bassline
UK Shakedown (Del Monte Mix)
If You Wanna Party (Original & M1 4x4 Mix)
Giving It Up
Ragga Fire (4x4 Mix)

more great non-TE-related 06 tunes:
Will Phillips - Rescue Me
Robbie T - Liferied
Ne-Yo - So Sick (Tables Turn/Control-S remixes)
T-Pain - I'm Sprung (Mask remixes)
Jill Scott - Love Rain (Signal to One Remix)
Paleface - Karma / Crazy Love
Scott Tonic - Tell Me
etc etc

great year all in all, and i still need to catch up with the last few months' output!

Mind Taker (Mind Taker), Thursday, 28 September 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

yeah it's been a great year for r'n'g and 2-step revival plus plenty good MC grime too.
been trying to keep track on the myspace blog, but the list and blog are woefully incomplete. still, loads of good-to-great tunes:
http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=72674063&blogID=139105485&MyToken=57b82105-21b3-4159-ad8c-0bb4dc69c93f
yes in my world Midnight Circus is a #1 hit !

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 28 September 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

the great thing about ukg at the moment i think is that practically every facet of the scene is really healthy and bubbling nicely together, nothing's being pushed out to make way for anything new. and yeah, the fact that there's no pressure at all on these tunes to be new is particularly charming in these grabby times. the tuffer renegade little brother wideboysy 4/4 is an energizing presence too, meaning ukg 2k6 can swallow up bassline and funky house at leisure.

rtccc (mwah), Friday, 29 September 2006 12:13 (nineteen years ago)

DJ Luck and MC Neat are playing one of our local powerdrinker clubs next month!

Sadly, he will be the next Alexis Petridish. (Dom Passantino), Friday, 29 September 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

speaking of Luck, the 2006 Kele Le Roc tune he co-produced with Bigfoot: "A Thousand Years" is one of the most unique UKG tunes of the year cos it's horn-driven 2-step, not too far removed from Lyn Collins/James Brown funk.

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 29 September 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

i didnt know anyone still gave a rats ass about grime these days either!

tigertiger (tigertiger), Monday, 2 October 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

meaning ukg 2k6 can swallow up bassline and funky house at leisure

are we talking about the Junior Jack/Tom Novy/etc variety of funky house, or...? coz there was a thread a while ago that got me confused.

i'd like to see UKG mingling more with northern bassline, other than the occasional Up Norf rerub, but it seems like bassline is frowned upon among UKG headz.

Paleface - "Karma" and R-Kane & Domino - "Reach Out" are two fave bassline tunes this year. because I haven't heard a lot of great new bassline tunes (though props to scene godfather & (ex-?)UKDance poster DJ Richard), I'll probably be mixing them with more grime & 2-step revive tunes from 2006.

Paul (scifisoul), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

can anyone point out more mixes available for download (enjoyed DJ Solution's, thx for the link)?

W i l l (common_person), Monday, 2 October 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Will - here's a nice'n'fresh mix of recent tunes (incl. "So Divine", as championed on this thread). here's the Riddler Records showcase. lots of quality mixes on Duncan Powell's site too.

and if you're feeling adventurous, there's tons of mixes and radio shows audio @ 2sg & Uptown Records forums.

Mind Taker (Mind Taker), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

sorry, forgot to post the link of that first mix! here it is.

Mind Taker (Mind Taker), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 09:45 (nineteen years ago)

all kicking off on dissensus now. about funky house i mean, not the richard loganjohn thread. hed kandi/defected is a good call, likewise about "scene not sound". not sure it's even that tho - more like a collective "meh so what do regular people listen to anyway" moment. you may also care to notice that a refix of 'drop the pressure' is currently #1 on the 1xtra grime/garage chart. ('drop the pressure', do u see!)

don't forget target plays f-house on his show every week. 'hands up 4 detroit', hurrah.

i think ukg and bassline are on pretty good terms really! do the wideboys not count?

thanks for the links, Mind Taker!
