Personally, I think SNL (even in its "classic era") is largely overrated, and I know Lorne Michaels has a vested interest in keeping SNL history scrubbed of embarrassing things like the '80-'81 season, but #95 is a damned good reason why all of SNL should be released on DVD.

Omar— Are you talking about Liquid Television (which, at least here in the states, interspersed rudimentary computer animation shorts with Aeon Flux cartoons and trance/ambient videos like Papua New Guinea. Come to think of it, there was also a show called The Orb that would play longform umm IDM [I guess... What was Future Sound of London again?] tracks all crossfaded underneath computer animation that just went and went...)

It would be really cool to get the concert projections of the Butthole Surfers, Revolting Cocks or VU up on Youtube. There was a movie that played at the Ann Arbor Film Fest a couple years ago that was clips of Marshall McLuhan interspersed with projections from Exploding Plastic Inevitable.

I'm tossing this one in because I've been reading Jake Austen's excellent book -TV A Go Go- lately. A big thank you to Mr. Austen for writing this one up.

71. Blue Cheer on one of Steve Allen's talk shows in the late 60's, playing *and* bantering with Allen(!).

Actually, -TV A Go Go- has an entire chapter (set up like a series of TV Guide listings) of memorable music appearances on TV, most of which will probably never turn up on YouTube anytime soon, I'm thinking.

Yeah. I always thought it went something like:

"I'm Rapmaster Barney and I'm here to say
I love Fruity Pebbles in a major way.
The bedrock yellow orange purple lime and red
But to get that fruity taste, I've gotta trick Fred."

Fred: "To get that fruity taste, he's gotta... TRICK FRED!!??!?"

Barney: "Guess that's a rap!"

-- Tim Ellison (thefriendlyfriendlybubbl...), March 16th, 2006.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 21 March 2006 12:59 (twenty years ago)

Regarding R.E.M., they appeared on a Nickelodeon show, Livewire, in 1983, where they performed and answered questions from kids. Urban legend has it that the kids in the audience included the Beastie Boys, though I have no idea if that's true or not. I'd like to see that clip.

Which makes this 66 on the list...

Unfortunately I'm having trouble finding that clip - I used to have it around here somewhere. It's on one of the Best of New Wave Theatre video compilations, and I know it's floating around in the p2p universe, so it shouldn't be that hard to get a hold of.

I loved NWT's ability to convey a sense of total anarchy and wildness yet being totally grounded in the mission of documenting the current music scene. So many great bands played that show, but also a lot of mind-blowing bands that disappeared without a trace. I remember one band that had about 7 members, lead singer played the clarinet, and they were on this droning/hypnotic/alienation trip that was something to behold. Never heard or saw anything by them since, can't even remember their name.

Supposedly there are like 60 episodes sitting in a vault somewhere. I can't begin to imagine what goodies are hiding in that pile.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 23 March 2006 14:33 (twenty years ago)

57. Any of the Top of the Pops appearances by The Beatles.

Amazingly, all these were destroyed by the BBC years ago but it is still hoped that off air recordings might exist somewhere.

here's a fine clip from 'new wave theater'

would kill to get more, especially the Monitor clip. I was lucky enough to attend many of these shoots at the old Florentine gardens Auditorium in Hollywood circa early 80's.
good times and truly one of the best tv shows of all time. Supposedly the creator, David Jove
is waiting for someone to give him mega dollars for his archives. In other words, we'll probably never see most of that stuff.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Thursday, 23 March 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Wow, that's quite a claim to fame Brad. David Jove died in 2004, though, so I guess his wait is over. His daugther ended up with the stuff and she's trying to release it somehow. I think there would be so many rights issues that a legit release is probably unlikely - imagine tracking down all the bands that appeared! But I know I would lay out serious cash for New Wave Theatre season sets on DVD...

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 23 March 2006 17:20 (twenty years ago)
