Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah I saw the amg thing yesterday, what's up w/that? either they got hacked or suddenly had an attack of the patriotics

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:40 (twenty years ago)

It's kind of creepy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

I think it's just that they got paid a shitload of money... I wonder if they charged more for the wallpaper.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Gotta keep Ned in pullovers somehow.

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:42 (twenty years ago)

Well, you know. (Meantime I have no idea what any of you are talking about, and I used the site yesterday.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Did you click on the link?

The background wallpaper is all little images for the National Guard and then the top banner ad is another link to the same.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

I got Holiday Inn ads.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Fucking Army, wanting me to sleep indoors and shit.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Now it's Lisa Loeb, which makes me want to join the army!

Huk-L (Huk-L), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:48 (twenty years ago)

I think the tailor the background ads for your appropriate form of paranoia.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

So I guess they aren't kidding about the recruitment problems.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 20:04 (twenty years ago)

WANTED: Music geeks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, the link takes me to the AMG front page, where there are no advertisements for anything. So I looked up a specific band on the site (Fine Young Cannibals popped into my head) which gives me a banner ad for IM "smileys" and another for INSWeb auto insurance. Of course these rotate with a pool of other ads, but I use the site just about every day and I don't recall seeing ads from the US armed forces. How odd that other users would get a page full.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Even weirder, the wallpaper showed up for about five seconds before the rest of the page loaded, so it srsly looked like it had been hacked.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I get the Army shit every time I use it. I was going to say something, but I figured someone here would get to it eventually.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 20:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm the same as Paul. I recall ever seeing any armed forces ads either.

A. Lingbert (A. Lingbert), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Serve your country.
Save lives.
Defend freedom.
Listen to the Silver Jews.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

First we have to let them recruit in our colleges, now we have to let them recruit in our databases? It's a very strange world that we live in, Master Jack. (I.e., fuck a military.)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 21:22 (twenty years ago)

this came up months ago when they had some other ads in the background. if you use an ad blocking hosts file or something none of that shit ever shows up.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

it didn't work for me, then on a hunch i switched from firefox over to internet explorer.. comes up there.

this is the image they are referring to upthread:

http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/4752/rev100x100arngmedical03063qm.gif

i think people are thinking its a hack because the page looks horrible. but i'm guessing a poorly executed paid sponsorship.

gritty sanskrit (sanskrit), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

The Army clearly isn't recruiting any graphic designers.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

I just tried this too, with the same results. Haha, it looks much more horrible than I imagined. I'm cancelling my plans to join the military.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 22:03 (twenty years ago)

Yay for Firefox, filtering out all that nasty government propoganda!

musically (musically), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Heheh, so that's the answer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

I didn't even think to try it on another browser.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

can someone post a screenshot of the new amg? it looks the same to me.

lf (lfam), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 22:13 (twenty years ago)

gritty sanskrit (sanskrit), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 22:41 (twenty years ago)

it also occurred to me that you can target your advertising by browser.. maybe they thought that firefox people were too skeptical/educated to enlist in the national guard

When you first go to the site, all you see are those National Guard images...then after a few seconds the AMG stuff shows up.

*sigh* Oh, gritty, you shatter my dreams. And here I thought they were just trying to get me to enlist because I was gay. :-)

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Needed because of stories like this.

"One weekend a month"? har. those days are over.

"They are part of a 4,000 member deployment."

banana squad (dayvidday), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 23:43 (twenty years ago)

they sacrifice their lives so we can quibble about Surfjan

gritty sanskrit (sanskrit), Thursday, 16 March 2006 03:05 (twenty years ago)

They sacrifice their lives for that?

..
