Will likely grab this today -- anyone heard? Of the stage productions, I only saw The Orphan of Zhao, which had some cute, clever stuff (and David Patrick Kelly -- Cyrus in The Warriors who's on the album too).

duhhh, that's Luther, not Cyrus....

I saw My Life as a Fairytale--the songs are good.

I dig it. The only thing, though, is that I was expecting Showtunes to be an album-album, which it is not. Just as long as you're okay with almost no cohesion whatsoever, it's a pretty rewarding listen.

it's a pretty rewarding listen.

If you were expecting your ears to bleed, yeah, it's pretty rewarding when they actually don't. Otherwise, Showtunes = crap.

I'm pissed with Nonesuch (or maybe just Merritt) for the decision to release it on CD as such a slapped-together mess...you can get the full albums on iTunes, but why just there? Grr.

Some of his favourite tracks are listed in today's METRO!

the bellefox, Friday, 17 March 2006 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Oddly, nothing in the METRO ever seems to be on their website. So, here is what he likes:

Squiddly by Squiddly Diddly

Let The Little Girl Limbo by Doris Day

Blue Cabaret by Ronny

Change by Sparks

Memorize the City by the Organ

Try The Worryin' Way by The Fabulettes

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

i was right to get off the bandwagon w/69 love songs

amateurist0, Friday, 17 March 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

when he gave up his synths, i gave up on him

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 17 March 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

his last one has grown on me, in its beauty and its satisfaction, its not nearly as lonely as the last works...this one hasnt really had much hype though

anthony easton (anthony), Friday, 17 March 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki = synthist! Does this one have a "no synths" disclaimer like i?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 17 March 2006 21:42 (twenty years ago)

i am with SM, for sure.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 17 March 2006 22:40 (twenty years ago)

i was right to get off the bandwagon w/69 love songs

the synthist argument totally applies here. there are some pretty great songs on 69 love songs and even a couple on the one that came out a couple years ago, but the time to get off the bandwagon was circa holiday and charm of the highway strip. going from scrapped-together synth pop to scrapped-together chamber pop was not necessarily a good idea.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Saturday, 18 March 2006 01:07 (twenty years ago)

I know we've been over this 69 times, but I consider all TMF's albums til 69LS to be nice pop experiments with some gems... then he made one of the greatest fucking albums of the last 20 years. Gimme gimme that kinda "chamber pop."
