Take it away, I am not amused.

Should've Never Give Jimmy Mod Money (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh great, and we get Perry's blog too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

You'd think with Panic! At the Disco and the Go! Team, they could've at least tossed Godspeed You! Black Emperor a bone.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:47 (twenty years ago)

towers of london? HAHAHAHAHA

youth problem (YouthProblem), Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm actually pretty excited about this. It's a much better lineup than last year's -- it features two of my favorite live bands (Sonic Youth and Sleater-Kinney) plus a bunch of bands I'd love to see live but wouldn't necessarily shell out the money for a headlining show of theirs (Wilco, Kanye, RHCP, Shins, QOTSA, Ween). And lots of other favorites, too. It's really close to being Coachella - Midwest Edition.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:50 (twenty years ago)

Amazing - they lined up every single band I would pay money not to see, all in one place for one weekend. Now, who'll loan me a C-130 loaded with barrels of napalm?

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

gritty sanskrit (sanskrit), Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:55 (twenty years ago)

i stopped reading at Red Hot Chili Peppers

o -- (eman), Thursday, 16 March 2006 17:56 (twenty years ago)

Gnarls Barkley will be sweet.

Joe Dunthorne (JoseMaria), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

I think that's the most boring and predictable lineup imaginable. There's not a single name in that list that makes me think "cool, I didn't expect them to play Lollapalooza."

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

i stopped reading at ...Midlake...

youth problem (YouthProblem), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

anathallo is so good.

the chilis? really? they played at lolla once in their prime... IN STINKIN' 1992.

katie, a princess (katie, a princess), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

s/c johnson wax (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:30 (twenty years ago)

A whole lotta bands that if I were walking by, I might stop to hear a song or two... or one.

Dave NSFW (dave225.3), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Poi Dog Pondering?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Believe it or not, they still exist. And they've been in Chicago for at least 10 years now, so I think that has a lot to do with it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

The reunion tour (opening for Toad the Wet Sprocket).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:52 (twenty years ago)

RHCP? which year lollapalooza is this? HAH

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Thursday, 16 March 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

okay i have no idea how i feel about this. there is a long list of bands that i would LOVE to see, especially at a festival, and then all of the other bands i would almost pay NOT to see

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Thursday, 16 March 2006 19:10 (twenty years ago)

You people are just too cool for school. There's plenty of great bands there and it sounds like a blast. Relax a little and enjoy yourself. Turn down the snarko-meter, brats.

The King of Flop Threads (TCBeing), Thursday, 16 March 2006 19:16 (twenty years ago)

it's not a blast. believe me.

youth problem (YouthProblem), Thursday, 16 March 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

when oh when will Matisyahu's 15 min. expire already?

o -- (eman), Thursday, 16 March 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

There aren't enough ppl who stand onstage and push buttons for the brats' liking.

I wouldn't go to a fest like this if every band I ever loved was playing.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 March 2006 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I just want to see the Dresden Dolls? Can I just pay a dollar to see them?

Jeff. (Jeff), Thursday, 16 March 2006 20:53 (twenty years ago)

heard of 4 of those last 20...not up on any...

overall- if it was 50$, and i lived there, yeah.
as it stands- no fucking way.

eedd, Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for that insight, eedd.

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 16 March 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Well I live here and I managed to get in on the $45 pre-sale three day pass, so I'm really excited for this. There's a lot of bands on that list I'm excited to see. Lots of crap, but that just makes it easier to plan my days. And with the kids all rushing over to see Matisyahu and Panic at the Disco, it'll leave the other stages a little more open. I really shouldn't be surprised by the hate and snarkiness in this thread... but I still am. As a music lover whos been jealous of Coachella and all the Brit fests for years, I'm happy to see Chicago taking baby steps in the right direction.

jonviachicago, Thursday, 16 March 2006 23:35 (twenty years ago)

Word.

eedd, I can understand that you'd be nonplussed, considering you haven't heard of like 75% of the bands that are playing!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 March 2006 23:38 (twenty years ago)

"As a music lover whos been jealous of Coachella and all the Brit fests for years, I'm happy to see Chicago taking baby steps in the right direction."

Yeah, but we've now got the Intonation and Pitchfork music festivals, and they probably both tend to have about as many bands that I want to see for only 1/5th of the price and 1/20th as many frat kids or hippies.

Bradley Kay (just another chicagoan), Friday, 17 March 2006 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I would enjoy seeing at least 10 of those bands, which is probably the amount of bands I would see anyway. So if I lived anywhere near Chicago, I would probably be interested.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Friday, 17 March 2006 06:57 (twenty years ago)

-- NoTimeBeforeTime (mbvarkestra197...), March 16th, 2006 6:21 PM. (later)

They did that one time and the tour was cancelled. Remember?

Period period period (Period period period), Friday, 17 March 2006 07:08 (twenty years ago)

if this was announced on april 1st anyone would think it was a joke with that line up

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:18 (twenty years ago)

Why?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:19 (twenty years ago)

This will be a great venue for the Red Hot Chillipeppers to announce that they are splitting up.

Dave AKA Dave (dave225.3), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:20 (twenty years ago)

OhmygodIjustnoticed: Blues Traveler

Dave AKA Dave (dave225.3), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:22 (twenty years ago)

re: Why?

because there is a significant % of crap artists

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:24 (twenty years ago)

because there is a significant % of crap artists

Yeah, but that's true of Lollapalooza any year. I mean, who would you actually expect to be on the bill? And was last year any better?

Maybe as a Chicagoan, I'm just not used to these kinds of large music festivals, but looking at that lineup, there's a significant % of artists whom I like at least a few songs by, including: RHCP, Wilco, Kanye West, Death Cab for Cutie, The Flaming Lips, Ween, QOTSA, Common, The Shins, Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, Broken Social Scene, Iron & Wine, Gnarls Barkley, Stars, Blackalicious, Lady Sovereign, Feist, the Hold Steady, the Go! Team, Of Montreal, and Hot Chip. So that sort of seems worth it to me alone.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 March 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

"Thanks for that insight, eedd.
-- paulhw (pppso...), March 16th, 2006."

eeeey, no problem! doin what i can, with what i got!!!

eedd, Friday, 17 March 2006 14:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm with Jaymc -- I'm in Chicago, I got a cheap ticket, why the hell not? It's not like we have to sit rapt for three days -- WE CAN GO HOME AND COME BACK! It's better than a tent, that's for sure.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

No Poison, no credibility.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Ned would goto Martian Fest !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm not denying that, but it would be a rather studious affair.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

studious is better than a bog standard combo of artists approved by the american media establishment of magnet magazine/ paste/ spin / rolling stone / filter etc

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 17 March 2006 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Only backbacker rap at imaginary Martian fest...C'mon, how about some of those Houston rappers, or some dancehall and reggaeton

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 17 March 2006 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Martianfest would be cool. I'd be interested in Depeche Mode, TV on the Radio, Nathan Fake, Scott Walker, Madvillain, Juan Maclean, Bark Psychosis, Junior Boys, The Knife, Broadcast, Animal Collective, and Vitalic. But I haven't heard of at least half of your lineup. And it seems like a much different beast than Lollapalooza -- i.e., more deliberately experimental.

This thread is kind of ridiculous, some of you guys need to get into boondoggling or leather craft or something fun like that
