Irish, we're the blacks of Europe; and the Dubliners, we're the blacks of Ireland; and the North Dubliners, we're the blacks of Dublin. So say it loud, I'm black and I'm proud!

Phil Lynott Ode To A Black Man Lyrics
If you see Stevie Wonder tell him I hear
If you hear Stevie Wonder tell him I see
I don't want no songs for plants
I want songs for me
I don't want no songs for plants
I want liberty living in the city

If you see the doctor tell him he's king, Dr. Martin Luther
If you see the doctor tell him he's still king, you too Muhammed Ali
But this bad black boy won't be blown away by anything
Yes this bad black boy won't be blown away by anything

There are people in this town
That try to put me down
They say I don't give a damn
But the people in this town
That try to put me down
Are the people in the town
That could never understand a black man
Don't take it no more
Don't take it no more
Don't take it no more

There are people in the town
That try to put me down
They say I don't give a damn, damn
But the people in the town that try to put me down
Are the people in the town that could never understand a black man
Don't take it no more

If you see Robert Johnson, you too Robert Marley, Robert Mugabe
Now tell him I hear
If you see Malcom tell him I'm next, vexed
If you see Jimi, Jimi Hendrix
If you see my brothers tell them it's clear
I've been living on the wrong side
Now I hear
Don't take it no more
I don't take it no more
Mr. Joshua Nkomo
Don't take it no more
Jomo Kenyatta, oh no
Don't take it no more
Haile Selassi, Rastafarian
Don't take it no more
Professor Longhair
Don't take it no more

Irish, we're the blacks of Europe

House of pain were American 'Irish' though, i.e. not Irish.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Saturday, 18 March 2006 00:25 (twenty years ago)

I liked the first couple albums just fine. Muggs gets most of the credit, of course.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Saturday, 18 March 2006 00:29 (twenty years ago)

What's weird is that, at the time, I always assumed they were from Boston, because didn't they wear Celtic Jerseys all the time, being Celts and all? But they weren't, were they?

Anyway, outside of the eternal "Jump Around', their best song was "Put On Your Shitkickers and Kick Some Shit" or whatever it was called. Catholic working class kid punk rock; Dropkick Murphys (who ARE from Boston) would be proud. (Most Irish song title, I believe: "Shamrocks and Sheleleighs," which I am probably totally spelling wrong.)

Also: Way better than 3rd Bass.

xhuxk, Saturday, 18 March 2006 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Also, their rap style sounded a lot like Chubb Rock. Has anybody ever pointed that out?

xhuxk, Saturday, 18 March 2006 00:33 (twenty years ago)

I have love for their album *Truth Crushed To Earth Shall Rise Again* cuz my hero Divine Styler is all over it (He's practically an unofficial 4th member on it, and there are lovely pictures of him in the booklet), and cuz it's a murky, depressing, dark and sad mess. Like me. But it has way better beats than I do.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 18 March 2006 01:05 (twenty years ago)

also search: "Who's the Man".

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 18 March 2006 01:26 (twenty years ago)

I liked the first couple albums just fine

That you made it to the second one is impressive. I don't believe I could make it through half of the debut (tho' "Jump Around" remains a forever classic).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 18 March 2006 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't that single called "Shamrocks & Shenanigans"?

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Saturday, 18 March 2006 02:16 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, maybe! But it SHOULD have been sheleleighs (for more leprechaun points)

xhuxk, Saturday, 18 March 2006 03:05 (twenty years ago)

"Shamrocks & Shenanigans (Boom Shalock Lock Boom)", to help out radio listeners looking for the single. And the Butch Vig mixes on an leprechaunally cringeworthy green vinyl Sub Pop 7" were titled the In The Dirt Mix and the Buds & Brew Mix.

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 18 March 2006 05:54 (twenty years ago)

Primarily a naff band, but there were a handful great songs, especially Put Your Head Out with B-Real.
I'm pretty sure their Judgement Night song Just Another Victim with Helmet was good too...

M Carty (mj_c), Saturday, 18 March 2006 07:06 (twenty years ago)

Giving credit where it's due:
- Everlast is L.A. old school w/ his collaboration on Ice-T's Rhyme Syndicate.
- The first House of Pain album ctually was a landmark record in hip hop.
- Member's projects since have been not-so-embarrassing.

Bobby Peru (Bobby Peru), Saturday, 18 March 2006 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Everlast have a mini-beef with Eminem in like 2000?

cracktivity1 (cracktivity1), Saturday, 18 March 2006 19:00 (twenty years ago)

He did indeed. I can't remember what Everlast's contribution to the beef was but Eminem gave a diss back over the "Hit 'em up" beat if I remember correctly.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Saturday, 18 March 2006 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Er, apart from the whole DJ Lethal/ Limp Bizkit thing, though! I'm sure the Latvian hip-hop scene is shamed to this day.

Everlast's What It's Like is great, though.

M Carty (mj_c), Saturday, 18 March 2006 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Everlast had a go at D12 for their poor counting abilities.

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 18 March 2006 23:52 (twenty years ago)

Wikipedia: "Everlast is of Irish descent and is a convert to Islam."

Confounded (Confounded), Sunday, 19 March 2006 03:51 (twenty years ago)

Shamrocks & Shenanigans (Boom Shalock Lock Boom)- the butch vig mix with big metal riff is great!

grapple (grapple), Sunday, 19 March 2006 04:57 (twenty years ago)

Also: Way better than 3rd Bass.

-- xhuxk (xedd...), March 18th, 2006

No. HofP inspired the mook hop genre of Limp B and the like. 3rd Base had two fun LPs with Prince Paul production, not to mention cameos from Zev Love X (the young MF Doom.) MC Serch basically discovered Nas and his company was namechecked by Jay-Z on "The Takeover"--"I know who I paid, god, Serchlight Publishing." Unfortunately, neither Serch nor Pete Nice have appeared on a Santana record.

bulletproof wallace, Sunday, 19 March 2006 09:33 (twenty years ago)

"unfortunately"

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 19 March 2006 10:10 (twenty years ago)

But House of Pain never did a song as stupid as "Pop Goes the Weasel"! (And 3rd Bass never did one as great as "Jump Around.")

xhuxk, Sunday, 19 March 2006 14:51 (twenty years ago)

i should also point out that, outiside of the word "fun" (and assuming some Prince Paul productions and MF Doom cameos are better than others, which they are), none of this has anything to do with how good either group's music is.

xhuxk, Sunday, 19 March 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I know 3rd Bass are more "respectable." But la di da.

xhuxk, Sunday, 19 March 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

> And 3rd Bass never did one as great as "Jump Around."

Steppin' to the AM, Brooklyn Queens, Words of Wisdom, Product of the Environment are all at least as good as Jump Around. Steppin' is better.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 19 March 2006 15:14 (twenty years ago)

(I do like "Steppin to the AM." I will at least admit that.)

xhuxk, Sunday, 19 March 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

The idea of Divine Styler on a House of Pain album trips me out. (That Scott is a fan of his does not trip me out.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 March 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

If you ever see it for a dollar somewhere, Ned, pick it up. Hardly anyone has heard it. Total bomb. It also features Cokni, who was the dancehall dude on Divine's first album *Word Power*, and an original member of Divine's Scheme Team. I listened to that House Of Pain album a lot when I was writing my thing on Divine for Phil's book. It really sounds like they are on their last legs on that album. Their Irish eyes are most definitely not smiling. But, like I said, great beats and Divine Styler.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 19 March 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

when I was writing my thing on Divine for Phil's book

Is that what you're doing? I am so very pleased. :-D

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 March 2006 15:40 (twenty years ago)

The first time I ever saw the Scheme Team on t.v. was in Everlast's video for i got the knack, and divine worked with him on his whitey ford album, so they have definitely come a long way together (not that i'm a big fan of the acoustic world-weary whitey ford stuff. not like i'm a fan of i got the knack, that's for sure). Bilal Bashir, Divine's longtime partner and former Rhyme Syndicate member, produced Everlast's first Ice T-era album and that one is still worth at least 2 bucks if you see it somewhere.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 19 March 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Bilal also produced *Word Power*. Forgot to mention that. And Bilal and Bilal's brother put out one of my all-time favorite albums to feature Divine Styler and a Michael Franks sample: Styles of Beyond's *2000 Fold*. that one is worth at least 5 bucks if you see a copy.

And I'mma tell you who's Daddy fuck with a trigga
Now Daddy is the nigga getting head from your Mommy
Daddy is the nigga with the gun like a tommy

And Daddy is the nigga with your shit on his nikes
So don't be scared just be prepared
For when you dis a nigga that you won't be spared
Little white boy how the fuck you figure

Internet needs more photos of Everlast in his "white Heavy D" Rhyme Syndicate days.

can't front, everlast was the shining star on rhyme syndicate

hooking up with muggs was the best thing for him.

"I've got more rhymes than a bible's got psalms"

There are only 150 psalms. Hence, he released only three albums with House of Pain before leaving the group, bereft of further rhymes.
