I can't believe there's no thread for Shivaree! I was gratified to hear "Goodnight Moon" in some Tarantino movie, I think it was "Kill Bill," it's a perfect pulp song for that, all "There’s a nail in the door / and there’s glass on the lawn / tacks on the floor / and the tv is on / and I always sleep with my guns / when you’re gone"

Anyway what the hell is her deal? She does my favorite version of "My Boy Lollipop" and there's some steep competition with that song.

A POX to get one started:

Mexican Boyfriend
Goodnight Moon
Bossa Nova (Single Mix)
Little Black Mess
Idiot Waltz
Thundercats
Ten Minutes
John 2:14
Voiceless
I Close My Eyes (probably the most similar song to "Goodnight Moon")

The first album (which has a VERY long title that I can't trust myself to type in full correctly but starts with "I Oughtta Give You A Shot In The Head...") has "Goodnight Moon" on it but is a tiny bit patchy. The second, "Rough Dreams" is unfathomably glorious, and never released in the US, I don't think. The third, "Who's Got Trouble" is very good also. But, yeah, "Goodnight Moon" is one of the best debut singles of the last 10 years.

"I Oughta Give You a Shot in the Head For Making Me Live in This Dump." It's from "Green Acres."

"Mexican Boyfriend" is goosebump-inducing.

allmusic.com's review of that first album: "Shivaree's debut album, I Oughtta Give You a Shot in the Head..., is firmly in the mainstream of alternative rock in the late '90s, fitting in nicely with adult alternative radio formats as well as straight-up alternative. The best of the songs are memorable, well-constructed, and performed with commitment; not everything here is a keeper, but overall, the album seems to signify that the band will develop and progress with its next release."

hahaha I mean what the fukk???? If this were the world of print, the name of the group and the name of the album would both be in a slightly different, crappier font, and sitting crookedly in the paragrah.

That Allmusic review sounds like a report card from Billboard. Some of those reviews are so phoned-in.

edward basically otm, though i'd probably pick a different 10 - 'goodnight moon' is incredible, so perfectly constructed and performed and everything. i was really surprised to hear it at the end of kill bill 2! especially because it was ages since it first came out. rough dreams is a fantastic album, rinsed the hell out of it in 2002 - loads of ace female-tom-waits-goes-broadway stuff, i think my favourites are 'after the prince and the showgirl' and 'reseda casino'. a really joyously swooning summer album - listening to it in the winter feels wrong. i haven't really got into who's got trouble?, it sounds fine when i listen to it but curiously unmemorable.

If I had a POXV, the next V would all be "Rough Dreams" songs, definitely "After The Prince" and "Reseda Casino" but also the really weird and wonderful "All Because You Told Me So". Nearly picked "Flycatcher" but there's a live version of it that's quite a bit better.

i HAVE to go back and listen to rough dreams tonight, bastardly cold weather or no.
