God only knows if this'll work: a rolling Tofu thread.

So I actually DO run a lil' blog called The Tofu Hut where I occasionally post my musical interests and I also (obviously) spend way too much time over here, so I figure what the hell; as much time as I put into the damn entries, I might as well see if any of youse are up for discussing the stuff I find worthwhile.

After an extreme hiatus, I've just now put up a fairly long post about the maestro of the Xhosa mouthbow, Madosini; feedback here would be appreciated.

welcome back! i like your blog.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 20 March 2006 07:02 (twenty years ago)

And here I was hoping to find a thread about songs extolling the virtues of soybean curd.

Not that I can think of any. Give Jonathan Richman a few more albums, though.

"Some tofu and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright..."

Brave Combo's vegetarian-friendly rewording of Mel Torme's "Christmas Song."

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Monday, 20 March 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

My personal favorite tofu song is from the Nickelodeon show Doug: The Beets 'Killer Tofu'

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 20 March 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Somehow, I knew you guys would come through.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Today's blue plate special is a piece on Mexico City's own guitar duo, Rodrigo y Gabriela.
Again, feedback or discussion about the music is appreciated.

Yay, John, you're back! You had been slipping down my blogroll and I was sad. :(

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

I told you fantasy sports would eat your soul, John.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Well, my cable's been out lately...
And thanks for the well wishes. But is anybody digging the tunage?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I'll keep tryin': new post about the criminalization of 'Ready to Die' and the Biggie/Sinatra mash-up album.
Feedback is appreciated.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 March 2006 05:47 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
New post on a fairly rare topic for th' Hut as I offer a listen to sad white boys: Milosh and Daniel Cirera.

As always, I welcome just about any response but trolling, so feel free.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 17 April 2006 03:29 (twenty years ago)

fucking hell forks, i was just looking for ready to die on amazon today and i could NOT figure out why it wasn't listed, it was driving me crazy, then i see your second-last post. nutso!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 17 April 2006 03:41 (twenty years ago)

And here we are again: a look at the amazing komuz playing of the Kyrgyzstani musician Zainidin Imanaliev; I'm astonished at how much this guy sounds like a US country/bluegrass artist.

Non-trolling comments are not only welcome but requested.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 05:33 (twenty years ago)

If you're hungry, drop by for a bite of moo goo gai pan and a rubber biscuit chaser. Loving that URL.

Today's Hut marks the start of a thirteen-post mix of mostly fifties + somewhat rare r+b cuts lifted from the original vinyl. Tonight is The Rays and The Chips; future offerings include two song cuts from Jimmy Scott, Percy Mayfield, Amos Milburn, along with material by Lou Rawls, Clyde McPhatter, Bobby Blue Bland and a weird, scatting Ray Charles track that (as far as I know) has never been re-released.

I'm making an effort to adhere to a Monday/Wednesday/Friday posting schedule; with a concentrated day of Sunday writing and web research, it might even actually happen.

Commentary on Moo Goo or Rubber Biscuit would be great to hear; let me know what you think.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 21 April 2006 04:59 (twenty years ago)

Gettin' awful lonely here, and yet I soldier on.

Part two of that r+b mix with a pair of tracks about a dead girlfriend circa '52-'53: Clyde McPhatter fronted Dominoes and a cut from The Checkers.

Friendly feedback requested.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 24 April 2006 04:22 (twenty years ago)

that mcphatter/dominoes track is great. thx.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 24 April 2006 04:32 (twenty years ago)

yr. welcome.
I'm pretty sure I've never heard anybody go completely batshit berzerk on a doowop cut before; McPhatter makes it sound like that's just how it's supposed to be.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 24 April 2006 04:35 (twenty years ago)

Hi Forks please YSI da Spank rock k tks

Confounded (Confounded), Monday, 24 April 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh, Conny; you imp.
You know I much prefer Devin.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 24 April 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

RUBBER BISCUIT OMG OMG OMG. Thank you. I've been playing it for Sterling, and he keeps dancing to it...

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 24 April 2006 16:55 (twenty years ago)

"Conny"?

Oh Forkie, you know I much prefer Conrad!!

Confounded (Confounded), Monday, 24 April 2006 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Conrad it is, then; but I wouldn't mind hangin' on to the "Forkie" moniker.

Douglas, contributing to random instances of babies dancing to 'Rubber Biscuit' makes my whole life worthwhile.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Hosting down on Wed-Fri, so no love till now:
Little Jimmy Scott joins the Hut pantheon; I go sleepy now.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 1 May 2006 05:28 (twenty years ago)

Enter Percy Mayfield, one of my all-time favorite artists.
That voice! Those songs! The tragic life! Make a movie already!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Time for some "ugly women" tracks from a pair of beauties: Big Maybelle and Pearl Reeves.
The Maybelle track especially is some hot shit; that woman could wind up and fuckin' PITCH, mang.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 May 2006 04:20 (twenty years ago)

your name's not even conrad, wtf.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 May 2006 04:24 (twenty years ago)

Two more for the grist mill: a neat swing rarity about diabetes and an obscurity from Brother Ray.

Eat and be whole.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 04:04 (twenty years ago)

Amos Milburn, everybody's favorite underrated rnb pianist, takes a trip to the Hut with two killer tracks.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 15 May 2006 06:28 (twenty years ago)

Today on the Hut: Two slow dance doo-wop tracks; one from the little known Chanteclairs and the other from 'I Only Have Eyes for You' legends, The Flamingos.

Plus, a side of Norwegian pizza jingle-alia.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 22 May 2006 05:50 (twenty years ago)

I have got to get a Percy Mayfield best-of. I think I just have Johnny Adams singing Percy, which is pretty nice btw.

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Monday, 22 May 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

eMusic has a great two disc set for what amounts to like eight bucks, but not the impossible to find Rhino Handmade Tangerine disc.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 22 May 2006 17:38 (twenty years ago)

As good a double header as I'm ever likely to field: Bobby 'Blue' Bland and Charles Brown back to back.

The Bland track is especially good; it gives the best of James Brown a solid run for its money.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 05:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm proud to note, by the by, that I am the number one google hit for the following search query:

old RNB songs people dont even think about

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 05:30 (twenty years ago)

God only knows if this'll work: a rolling Tofu thread.

It worked! It worked!

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 06:28 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
"Worked" is relative, Conrad.

New music from Thomas Bartlett, aka Doveman and a post with songs from ol' skool rnb divas Etta James and Ivie Anderson.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
And yet more:

Norwegian Kitchen Appliance Rock from Hurra Torpedo and more "old RNB songs people dont even think about" from Lou Rawls and The Cadillacs.

Serious question, can anybody predate Cooke's 'Wonderful World' hook to before 'I'll Always Be In Love With You'? I'm curious if I've uncovered something or (more likelier) I'm just bein' ignorant.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 02:42 (nineteen years ago)

Avant-crooner Theo Bleckmann up with bells on.
