Brendan Benson needs more love, yay or nay?

With the Raconteurs sure to get some press with Jack White in the line up I'd just like to get some opinions on Brendan Benson's body of work. Hard to believe that One Mississippi was released 10 years ago.

Lapalco is a little uneven but Metarie was on just about every mix CD I passed out in the last 3 years.

Yay! That opening trio of tunes on Mississippi is killer.

The Alternative to Love? Ack, not sure what he was going for. Tchad Blake's production work sounds pasted on for the most part, the whole thing feels so thin. Not to mention the 9th grade rhyming-dictionary autopilot songwriting...so dissapointing.

"Good to Me" is one of the sweetest songs I know.

Yeah I agree with the above, first two albums are really great, can't play 'em enough. Alternative I just found impenetrable, like b minus says, what was he aiming for?! There was nothing on there that come even close to his first two. This Raconteurs schtick sounds a bit more like it tho' (from the one song I've heard), although it's a shame if Mr White's doin' the lead vocalizing for the whole time. Wait and see I guess - they're doing some UK shows this week - can't make it to any of them unfortunately. Some reports would be nice.

There are some tunes on the Raconteurs record that sound like One Mississippi material, including the song "Steady As She Goes," which reminds me of a slowed-down variation of "'Maginary Girl."

He seems to benefit greatly from having another songwriter involved in the process, which might be why he sounded somewhat lost on The Alternative to Love and why his work with the Raconteurs feels like good ol' times.

three years pass...

The new one is out, My Old Familiar Friend. First impression, much better than The Alternative to Love, not quite as good as Lapalco.

It's not ringing my bells.

The bland, workaday Raconteurs have sort of ruined this guy. Or at least my appreciation for him.
