I just realized that I can't think of any, except for the Hives. Am I just experiencing a mental block or are there really no good punk bands making music right now?

Nigel (Nigel), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

the observers
the a frames
the soviettes
the scabs

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard any of them... I'm out of touch...

Nigel (Nigel), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

the observers are sadly R.I.P.

the black lips : the recent third album is a revelation
the clorox girls (though their second album is kind of a bummer)
any band on the danish label kick'n'punch (esp. the young wasteners & gorilla angreb)

on HC side:
career suicide
fucked up
look back and laugh

and lots more...

Ben H (Ben H), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

The Ergs
Hunchback

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

The Busy Signals
The Human Eye
Art Brut(hello?!)
Pissed Jeans (more on the HC...sorta like Flipper with no sax)
Hight Tension Wires
The Intelligence
Popular Shapes
Baseball Furies
Baby Shakes

Look Back And Laugh...SO good.

youth problem (YouthProblem), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Marked Men.
the best punk pop band since The Ramones.
they also sounds like them, and as good as they were.

xuse me, Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:43 (twenty years ago)

FUNCTIONAL BLACKOUTS

Insane music. Exceptional aesthetic. Criminal IQ myspace for tunes.

Pharmaceutical Executive, Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:44 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't aware that punk rock still existed.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

marked men are cool!

this band from seattle called The Cops is coming to st. paul at the end of the month...i guess they are cool, supposed to sound like wire doing kinks or somethin!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:53 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't aware that punk rock still existed.

oh, you....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:54 (twenty years ago)

the divebomb honey are cool, but they are kinda b52s + punk.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:54 (twenty years ago)

falcon crest are cool.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

dillinger 4 apparently has a new record that's actually going to come out.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Why does the birds always shitting on me? (noodle vague), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:57 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah The Blind Shake is so awesome. I want to marry them. they wear gas station jackets like it's 95 Am Rep stylee.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:59 (twenty years ago)

The Exploding Hearts all died (RIP) but their one album is kinda newish and awesome if you like Buzzcocks or Undertones.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:00 (twenty years ago)

I second Pissed Jeans, and then would like to add:

Jerk (from Cleveland)
Gang Wizard (uh... I mean, they're a bit unclassifiable, but definitely punk in attitude and much of their music)
Aa (on Narnack, and completely amazing live. Imagine early Black Dice with lots more screaming and four percussionists)

trees (treesessplode), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:01 (twenty years ago)

Not all Exploding Hearts died. The one remaining member went on to form the Nice Boys. They're pretty cool. Great 70s pop-punk with a dash of glam.

youth problem (YouthProblem), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:07 (twenty years ago)

marked men are cool!

lotsa people swear by the current shit sandwhich/shattered records scene these days.

Ben H (Ben H), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

The A Frames are a punk band?

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

the A Frames are a punk band?

I'm stretching! a little...kinda post punk (at least Black Forest and 2) but I think the s/t one is def. just a robotic punk record...what else would you call like Hostage Crisis?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:15 (twenty years ago)

The Submarines
The Pussy Pirates (though they arguably sound too much like The Slits)
Human Wick Effect (awesome hardcore)
The Avatars (punky/garage)
Thee Cornados (South American punky garage immigrants)

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:34 (twenty years ago)

against me! are great, a bit preachy but good scrappy acoustic punk. though their last album was a bit more polished. produced by j. robbins, however.

wire and the buzzocks and mission of burma are still kicking around and making excellent music.

i really liked the distillers album too. kind of like the pretenders meets hole meets rancid. the last bad religion wasn't too bad either, though not any where near their greatest stuff,

i wish i could say rancid and NOFX and the dropkicks were still good, but they definitely aren't.

Emily B (Emily B), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Das Oath!

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 23:20 (twenty years ago)

The Bamboo Kids
Riverboat Gamblers

cdwill (cdwill), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 23:21 (twenty years ago)

i really like the early rancid stuff. i should hear more of their later stuff.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 23:59 (twenty years ago)

i wish i could say rancid and NOFX and the dropkicks were still good, but they definitely aren't.

You can say that again.

Nigel (Nigel), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 00:07 (twenty years ago)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 00:12 (twenty years ago)

lf (lfam), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 00:28 (twenty years ago)

"dillinger 4 apparently has a new record that's actually going to come out."

no kidding?

second the against me!

TAO (daggerlee), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

that's what i hears on the streetz....it's been taking forever but i guess they've decided to be a band again. who knows though, it's hard to tell w/those dudes.

i heard they were taking promo photos at the triple rock for fat wreck about a month ago or something...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 00:35 (twenty years ago)

The Selby Tigers

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 00:42 (twenty years ago)

which reminds me...Die Electric! are sweet w/their new drummer (ex-Volante dude)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 00:42 (twenty years ago)

I second Pissed Jeans and Functional Blackouts!!

chad (chad), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 02:09 (twenty years ago)

The A Frames' 7" records are MUCH more punky than their albums, and just as great. The Intellegence and Diapers are offshoots that a quite good too.

Just about everything I've heard on Dirtnap Records is great- Marked Men and Exploding Hearts for sure. But also check out The Minds (HC with just enough keyboard to make it different) and The Ends (77' style punk along the lines of the Ruts or SLF)

And I'll put in second votes for Popular Shapes, Soviettes and Pissed Jeans.

bendy (bendy), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Against Me! seconded.

Also:

Face Down In Shit
3 Inches Of Blood
Kylesa
Ballast

and USAisamonster

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 02:22 (twenty years ago)

DIRTBOMBS

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 19:06 (twenty years ago)

(The Dirtbombs aren't really punk though...)

js (honestengine), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 20:04 (twenty years ago)

i've still never heard kylesa...heard they are great.

does Big Business count? (i guess it depends on if you think motorhead is punk or not)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 20:05 (twenty years ago)

Big Business' cut on the Invaders comp is maximum stinkola.

George 'the Animal' Steele, Wednesday, 22 March 2006 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Anyone know what's happened to The Bronx?

yer mam! (yer mam!), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 21:07 (twenty years ago)

ig Business' cut on the Invaders comp is maximum stinkola.

i have seen them twice live and they have been great, but somehow i didn't have the urge to buy the record...they are super loud and amazing live though...i could see it not being super impressive w/o the huge stage volume, etc...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Lightning Bolt? por favor ... y ... Art Brut.

the best!

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 21:17 (twenty years ago)

The Cherry Reds

The Selby Tigers

Seconded, are they still going?

Ben Dot (1977), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 21:37 (twenty years ago)

The Selby Tigers

Seconded, are they still going?

nope...they've all moved on to new bands...Dave Gardner (moustache dude and great producer) has an awesome new band called Die Electric! which I mentioned on the thread...Arzu has a couple of bands, Spider Fighter and Half Fiction, both which traffic in catchy Muff-style pop punk, good songs.....I think fans of Selby Tigers would like all of these new project, prolly.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)
