6/8 7/8 3/2?

it's driving me nuts.

I'm far from an expert but I think it's just a syncopated 4/4

at least, I have mixed it with regular 4/4 house records

I think the irregular bass/melody on top gives it the illusion of being a weird time sig .... but if you listen to the heaviest drum downbeats it's still a 4/4 house beat

Renard (Renard), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

okay now I'm listening to it

one of the bass-drum hits on the main part "drags its feet" like in a schaffel track

but listen to the first breakdown that starts around 1:05 and you can hear how it's still 4/4

Whenever anyone asks what a certain song's (unusual) time signature is someone always replies with "actually i think you'll find it's just 4/4"
(I'm not saying this isn't 4/4)

YSI?

Yeah, Renard OTM. That two-note bass thing comes on the 4 and the and of the 4.

here's a sample

i was trying to mix it with honest-to-goodness 4/4 stuff last night and it was wreck city, man

(not saying i'm the a good beatmatcher)

harshaw (jube), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 22:11 (twenty years ago)

(nor the a good best sentence constructor)

harshaw (jube), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 22:13 (twenty years ago)

The time signature is 4/4, but it swings in some twisted ways.

jeffery (jeffery), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 22:28 (twenty years ago)

so to mix it should i just match the 2 and 4 beats and let the rest sort itself out?

harshaw (jube), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 23:36 (twenty years ago)

Somewhere in the dim mists of the subcranial void I seem to remember reading or hearing about the "claves" in Latin music, and how they serve as organizing principles that function differently from mere "time signatures." Maybe even edd s hurt himself quoted something from the Ned Sublette Cuba book about this.

pitch mixing is the "3rd dimension" of djing

harshaw (jube), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 23:51 (twenty years ago)

It's in 4/4 and the bass notes fall on the 'ah' of 3 and the 'and' of 4. So the downbeat right after each bass phrase, that's the 1.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 23:53 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it's like a latin tumbao bass line except skipping every other phrase.

The "ah-ah-ah" vocal parts are triplets, which would tend to wreck most beatmatching efforts. But the basic syncopation of the 4/4 rhythm is your standard circa-1988 house beat (cf. 2 Puerto Ricans, a Dominican and a Blackman's "Do It Properly").

don't know if this helps illustrate anything or not but here's a snippet of a mix I made - the end of "Enrico" mixed into !!!'s "Take Ecstasy With Me"

(I was going to post up the *beginning* of Enrico, but on the track that came before it, the drums faded out and there was just treble ... so maybe that's the only way I was able to do the mix, I can't remember)

One little anticipated downbeat and you gringos lose all sense of time.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 23 March 2006 04:09 (twenty years ago)

It's in 4/4 and the bass notes fall on the 'ah' of 3 and the 'and' of 4

Ah, you're right. I'm never all that good with offbeats.
