...and it shows theoretically related/similar bands in a floaty spatial graphical way, with the most similar ones being nearest to the centre?

something (including the database tables behind) on the allmusic maps which show relationships between styles here.

but i guess you meant liveplasma (former musicplasma) now also including movies which relates bands in a graphical way and is based on amazon client data.

Alex is closest! The principle was exactly like that liveplasma one, but it looked a lot nicer and IIRC showed you a bigger number of bands, in a smaller font, against a dark background.

does anybody else do this on allmusic:

enter a band name (say, Pussy Galore), then think of somebody who couldn't be further away from them, aesthetically (say, Ray Conniff Singers), and, using only the "similar artists" list, see how many clicks it takes you to get from one artist to the other...kinda Kevin Bacon, like...

Music-Map looks almost like a good idea. Too bad it suggested Ace Of Base when I typed in Genesis though. Made me lose all faith in it.
