Tom Brosseau

Saw this guy play at the Fat Cat showcase at SXSW right before Animal Collective.

I was really impressed straight off. A straighter Devendra Banhart with a much better voice and way better songs? He had some really cool songs with super trad lyrics and this keening high-pitched voice.

Anyhow, does anyone know much about him? Sounds like Fat Cat is putting out a comp featuring songs from earlier releases.

Oh yeah, Tom Brosseau is the man. His album last year "What I Mean To Say Is Goodbye" was in my rotation for quite a while. He's a big fan of the blues standards. He's a talented guy, to be sure.

If you really want a treat, cue up Kexp.org and go to the live performance archives. He has one on there and it's really nice.

Gotta love the live archive!

I've seen Tom several times at Largo. Great, sincere performer. Has a live album and a couple of independent releases that are pretty much only available at Lou's in San Diego in addition to "What I Mean to Say is Goodbye". He's also half of the group Les Shelleys, which is also awesome - the cover of "Rum and Coca cola" is amazing. Also, there's a miniset you can stream on the Largo site largo-la.com including a pretty good cover of "To Ramona"
