vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 March 2006 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Romanthony - The Wanderer, good night turn the light off close after me will you

blunt (blunt), Friday, 24 March 2006 09:00 (twenty years ago)

and, kudos

blunt (blunt), Friday, 24 March 2006 09:01 (twenty years ago)

Chelonis is a fun campy rip-off of Robert Owens whereas Romanthony is the gardener and we are all his floorpieces and wallflowers.

Actually the real answer is Romanthony because of that drum sound he gets.

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 24 March 2006 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Romanthony because I like more stuff by him than by Chelonis - although that's possibly only because the latter hasn't done as much yet.

R.Hide In Plain Sight is mega-underrated.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 24 March 2006 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Romanthony POV

"Everybody dancin"
"The wanderer"
"South beach banger"
"Floorpiece"
"Sommore"

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 24 March 2006 10:19 (twenty years ago)

romanthony:
"falling from grace"

danny invincible (michael w.), Friday, 24 March 2006 11:34 (twenty years ago)

"ministry of love"

danny invincible (michael w.), Friday, 24 March 2006 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Chelonis is a fun campy rip-off of Robert Owens

Haha, like Owens wasn't campy to begin with.

Romanthony wins, for being so ambitious with the Romanworld album and for very confusingly pronouncing his name "Roman Anthony."

Richj (Rich), Friday, 24 March 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

i like how vahid google proofed rivers name just in case

weird, i would have thought chelonis would have had a stronger showing! personally, i think that even though the best romanthony tracks are probably better than anything chelonis has done, "dislocated genius" gives "r hide in plain sight" a run for it's money.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 March 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Adding to the Romanthony love.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 March 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

"Hold On"

deeej., Friday, 24 March 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

chelonis - batting 1.000
romanthony - batting .500?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

i thought chelonis would have a stronger showing as well, and i'd go for him too, though possibly i have not heard as much romanthony as i could have.

lidell is a lot of fun live and occasionally on record but he really doesn't hold a candle to the other two. he is fitter though.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:11 (twenty years ago)

nope

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

let's try again

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

hmmm. forget it.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

You can just drag the image to the address bar.

deeej, Friday, 24 March 2006 16:17 (twenty years ago)

i'll speak up for chelonis. i spent a few hours hanging out with him and he's a really sweet person--really sensitive and thoughtful. i like his earlier singles (One & One, I Don't Know?) better than his full-length album, but i still like him. i respect what he's trying to do--being black and a bit queeny in germany isn't so easy sometimes, and trying to do it within the bounds of the electro-house/techno scene isn't easy either. here's the piece i did about him for a german newspaper (if you feed it through google translator, it comes out hilariously off-base)

geeta (geeta), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:19 (twenty years ago)

"Ängstlich oder in your face?"

this reads unintentionally funny without translation.

it amazes me that ten years after AP german i can read an article about chelonis r jones!

vahid (vahid), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

haha, yeah, that's a good one! "in your face" translated into german would sound much worse. this is my favorite article i wrote for that paper -- it compares and contrasts monolake and dj premier

geeta (geeta), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Das erinnert mit jetzt total an Eric D. Clark !!! Jungs
Add Justus K & Hans Nieswandt and GET ONE WHIRLPOOL PRODUCTIONS

from:disco to:disco (blunt), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:39 (twenty years ago)

*mir

neeeein (blunt), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:40 (twenty years ago)

i didn't like 'dislocated genius' so much musically, aside from a few tunes, but i liked that it raised so many questions--especially within that insular german scene. i mean, the content of that album and all the racial imagery it brings up really does make the average german person uncomfortable. no one else in the electro-house scene is making album covers depicting a monkey eating watermelon. i mean, chelonis does shock people; i think it's a question of following through on the shock with really strong direction (i hope more into house than into rock or pop) and strong production. i think that getting booka shade to do the production is maybe a good idea, because those early singles were (i believe) produced by them, and you can tell they were--booka shade just has this really round, voluptuous sound to all their productions, with really amazing drum sounds, and those big, fat, amazing drum sounds were noticeably lacking in the full-length.

geeta (geeta), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:45 (twenty years ago)

Geeta that paper is a budding autobiography of sorts
(I don't have a problem with that)

Just Husayin (blunt), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:49 (twenty years ago)

the style i was told to write it in was a first-person style, more like a blog than an article. that's why it reads that way.

and now i have to go listen to 'from disco to disco' thanks to you!

geeta (geeta), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

but to be honest i never liked that song that much!

geeta (geeta), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

In it you'll find Eric is having more carefree fun than all three subjects of this TS combined BUT WHATEVS :)

blunt (blunt), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:55 (twenty years ago)

ha ha, blunt, i love whirlpool productions! but that's not my favorite song by them.

'carefree fun' isn't what any of the three subjects of this TS is about--if they do have fun it's a very 'careful' kind of fun. and chelonis is not about having fun at all. none of his songs are fun. they're all very tortured and/or sad.

geeta (geeta), Friday, 24 March 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I've been trying to avoid this sort of thing lately.

blunt (blunt), Friday, 24 March 2006 17:00 (twenty years ago)

I agree with Geeta re Chelonis. Dislocated Genius is v. good, but if he'd done an album as strong as the two big singles that preceded it he would have been unbeatable.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 24 March 2006 17:30 (twenty years ago)

nine months pass...
So while I still love Romanthony best (NOT Lidell, thank you) I'm finally hearing some Jones here (via the Get Physical comps) and that's good stuff.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 02:49 (nineteen years ago)

LOL i forgot i wrote this ... clicked on the thread going "WTF who is trying to bait me??"

is it tacky when i excelsior myself?

also who was i talking about in the thread starter??

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 05:14 (nineteen years ago)

Hahahah. :-) (See, I had no phase of going 'uh' over Get Physical and then going 'yay,' I just grabbed some of the mixes in the Tower implosion and am now most content.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 05:15 (nineteen years ago)

(And the Fairy Dub remix of "Le Bateau Ivre" is really sending me right about now.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 05:16 (nineteen years ago)

check it, ned

(unrelated to chelonis or romanthony)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 05:19 (nineteen years ago)

Why thank you sir, I will take advantage of this!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 05:29 (nineteen years ago)

Great story there about the guy, BTW.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 05:30 (nineteen years ago)

haha when i saw the guy's list of romanthony songs upthread i was like "wtf he forgot hold on" and then of course came across my own post.

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 06:08 (nineteen years ago)

Also, M.A.N.D.Y. remix of "La Bateau Ivre", check it!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 07:17 (nineteen years ago)

I simply don't understand the Jamie Lidell hate on this board.

Jena (JenaP), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 07:28 (nineteen years ago)

I like Andy's AMG slam the best, where he compares him to a "moderately talented hobbyist"

deej.. (deej..), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 07:34 (nineteen years ago)

vahid you were almost certainly referencing THIS:

http://odp.uoregon.edu/projects/03-04/everypicture/producers/tynan_delong_small.jpg

I'm going with chelonis but it's a close-run thing, mmmm yes indeedy.
