baby, disco is fuck (yournullfame), Saturday, 25 March 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA (and possibly Benny Andersson too). Sweden and Finland have compulsory military service, so a lot of musicians from here have served in the army - though many have chosen the alternative civil service too, or gotten a release due to health or psychological issues.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 25 March 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

The dude from Snap!

Considering that National Service was only abolished in 1963, I'm assuming that a fair few 50's and 60's musicians served. And in many othere countries it hasn't been abolished at all/until quite recently.

I know Per Gessle of Roxette has at least. During his time in Gyllene Tider, Gessle had already served, so while his bandmates were all serving, he recorded his first solo album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 26 March 2006 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Jerry Garcia was in the US Army, at least for a few months, in 1959.

Lee Hazlewood (twice!)

Roy Harper (R.A.F.)

Hans-Joachim Roedelius:

"Hans-Joachim Roedelius has packed a lot into his seventy years: a child actor in pre-war Berlin, teenage conscription into the post-war East German army, desertion, capture, a five year prison sentence with hard labour (he served two) followed by escape to the west just before the Berlin Wall went up."
