Maybe not by name, but there are plenty of streets where people would recognize The Stone Roses if you mentioned them. Not so much with a studio musician who hadn't joined any well-known bands yet, though.

Being the guy who played guitar on "Sunshine Superman" (among other things) doesn't necessarily make one "established." That would be like saying it's a big deal if one of the dorks in Avril Lavigne's band joined Maroon 5.

Not that I've bought an REM album in years, but I hardly think playing sideman, even long-term, is the same as "joining the band." So I wouldn't count Stringfellow with REM. (Don't press photos normally just show the three of originals?) Similarly for being the rotating guitarist/keyboardist/drummer in innumerable prog and/or metal bands (especially if you only stay for an album or two).
