Arthur presents "THE HOLY MODAL ROUNDERS - BOUND TO LOSE" at the Silverlake Film Festival in Los Angeles THIS SUNDAY MARCH 26...

The Holy Modal Rounders... Bound to Lose
Directed by Sam Douglas & Paul Lovelace
USA, 87 mins

Variety sez: "Charged with alternating currents of affection, exuberance and ineffable melancholy... BOUND TO LOSE offers an intriguing overview of the cult-fave combo that evolve from an acoustic duo to a psychedelic-folk rock band."

Synopsis: "This documentary tells the story of the infamous Greenwich Village psychedelic folk duo the Holy Modal Rounders. During the folk explosion in the early 1960s, the Rounders set themselves apart by being original, hilarious, out-of-control and influential. The film follows the band 40 years later after decades of unpredictable live shows, drug addictions, break ups and breakdowns--the Holy Modal Rounders survived one of the strangest careers in music. HOLY MODAL ROUNDERS: BOUND TO LOSE documents their sometimes ugly, but intensely amusing struggle to perform the music they love and hopefully make it to their highly anticipated 40th anniversary show. The film features Sam Shepard (their former drummer), Dennis Hopper, Peter Tork of The Monkees, Wavy Gravy, Loudon Wainwright III, John Sebastian of The Lovin' Spoonful, Dave Van Ronk, Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg of The Fugs, among many others."

!!!! Any New York screenings?

Would love to see this, of course.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Saturday, 25 March 2006 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Special Agent Krupa - Not sure about future screenings elsewhere -- check their website I guess -- we (Arthur mag) are just peripherally involved with these screenings.... I've seen the film and can vouch for it. It's even funnier/greater the 2nd time through -- can't say that about much these days... Sooo many great scenes, it just goes on and on.
The film also features onscreen time with BYRON COLEY and Big Bobby Christgau, but Van Rock is the keeper...

Sounds great! Won't be able to attend but I send my best from afar. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 25 March 2006 18:24 (twenty years ago)

It screened in NY once - summer of 04 I think it was. It's great and definitely worth checking out. It seemed a bit long but I think they've trimmed it up since. Quite a bit of the footage is from the 2000 tour/reunion/period, so there wasn't quite as much archival footage as I was hoping for. I suspect that's just because there isn't much. But don;t get me wrong, I could watch this a dozen times before I'd need a break.

TRG (TRG), Saturday, 25 March 2006 18:52 (twenty years ago)

God I can't WAIT to see this whenever it comes to NYC and/or DVD. I love the HMRs a lot.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 25 March 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

The thing is, the reunion footage (interviews, rehearsal, tour, performance, etc) is priceless, which you can't say for... I mean, who CAN you say that for?
Just check out the film still from the 2000ish period that we just added on the arthurmag.com front page...

JayBabcock (jabbercocky), Saturday, 25 March 2006 20:19 (twenty years ago)

No mention of Michael Hurley?

peter x (bucksbreeze), Saturday, 25 March 2006 22:13 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Hurley is not in there. Make of that what you will...

I'm not sure the filmmakers intended the doc to be definitive. Large parts of their 40+ career are glossed over. There really isn't much, if memory serves, of the 70s - including Have Moicy, which is obv Hurley's closest alignment with the Rounders. In fact, the film seems to me to a study of the Stampfel / Weber chemistry as much as anything. Which, hey, is pretty engaging.

Probably not the perfect thread to revive for this, but the search function doesn't seem to be working so this will do. Wanted to make Rounders fans aware of something they could have easily missed. The late great Jeffrey Frederick's wife has been operating Frederick Productions (the website is still a work in progress) in recent years. She's released a number of great things, with a few more in the works. Last year she released "Clamtones BC" which is a two CD set of a Frederick and the Clamtones radio show from I believe '77. The sound is pretty good all considered, but yeah, still a bit rough. The band is loose, a little sloppy, and probably stoned. It's fantastic. The brother release is Weber with the same band (Clamtones / west coast Rounders) at the same time, which I haven't heard yet but expect to love. In the near future, she'll be releasing Frederick's lone solo LP on CD, "Spiders in the Moonlight" which I love to death and which I believe is going to feature new artwork from Doc Snock. This is a classic Rounders family release, and I don't think it has ever been released on CD.

The film screened in my town during a documenatry festival in february and it's so fucking good. Stampfel was there and he did a few numbers with his banjo after a brief Q&A. He played Row Row Row Your Boat! He's such a sweet guy and was incredibly friendly and open to everyone's questions all weekend.
It would have been nice to see and hear a little bit more about Hurley but it would take another film to tell that story, too, I think. Rounders fans definitely should not miss it! Laughter on the verge of tears.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 14:08 (twenty years ago)

That film runs half the length of the HMR gig I saw at Tonic (a third of which was PS yelling for Weber to get back onstage).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 14:17 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

More on the doc, which is finally screening in NY:

http://daily.greencine.com/archives/005023.html

I liked it OK, but man it's uncomfortable watching the bickering sometimes. Also too bad there's hardly any surviving live footage from the'60s, at least here.

There's assorted musical events and related short-film screenings at Anthology and elsewhere throughout the week, but I don't see an online schedule.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 6 December 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

five months pass...

Any news on this being released outside NYC?
