I'm not really sure why I had forgotten about this band.

are they any good live?

don weiner (don weiner), Sunday, 26 March 2006 16:44 (twenty years ago)

someone told me this band was good but i've never heard them.

They sound vaguely familiar.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 26 March 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

new one is kind of Pavement meets Flaming Lips I guess.

don weiner (don weiner), Sunday, 26 March 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

plus they're based out of Oklahoma.

don weiner (don weiner), Sunday, 26 March 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

"ysi?"

They're great. Check out "Valerie Flames" and "The Twilight Showdown" off of The Dream That Stuff Was Made Of and "Brass Digger" off Built of Squares. I've only heard one track off the new album, but didn't do too much for me.

darin (darin), Sunday, 26 March 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Built On Squares is one of my favorite albums of its year (2004?). Check out "Pages" (great Bowie touches atop a Pavement template)... I will, in fact, YSI it in a minute.

Played the above link.
They sound very much like (a probably defunct) Papas Fritas, who strangely enough i saw with the Lips in Manchester a few years ago now.

Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountain Dog (Jessie the Drunk Dutch Mountai), Sunday, 26 March 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

this track sounds like interpol!

send your men of science quick (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 March 2006 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Acoustic guitar, handclaps, woo-oo-oo three-part harmonies, glockenspiel -- that's some strange idea of Interpol you got there.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 27 March 2006 02:16 (twenty years ago)

new one is kind of Pavement

The album is quite good, but it sounds absolutely NOTHING like Pavement, sorry.

I have a really good song from the record on Fluxblog right now. It's very Bowie.

well, the vocals do, at least...

send your men of science quick (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 27 March 2006 02:42 (twenty years ago)

It's very Bowie.

Thank you, Matthew! When Built On Squares came out, I kept calling it Bowie-influenced and most people acted like I was insane. Meanwhile, there are more -- and better -- Bowie borrowings in this stuff than in, say, the Arcade Fire.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 27 March 2006 03:29 (twenty years ago)

they've been pretty consistent with their sound

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Monday, 27 March 2006 03:46 (twenty years ago)

(starlight mints, pertaining to this record and the rest of them, I mean.)

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Monday, 27 March 2006 03:50 (twenty years ago)

if you're a Pavement obsessive (hi Matthew) you're not going to hear it, but a casual Pavement fan, especially the latter era, will frequently notice the similarities in phrasing. But I'd agree, Bowie's a better touchstone.

don weiner (don weiner), Monday, 27 March 2006 11:12 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the vocal phrasing is actually the part that is furthest away from Pavement! The guitars, the melodies - that's a lot closer, perhaps.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 27 March 2006 12:17 (twenty years ago)

The first song on this new Starlight Mints sounds remarkably similar to "Dan Abnormal" by Blur.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 27 March 2006 12:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I meant the musical phrasing not the vox, particularly the way the rhythms lurch.

don weiner (don weiner), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:32 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

any reactions to change remains? i liked what i heard, it was bowie disco of montreal-like

iro with the brown bag (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 04:14 (seventeen years ago)

I've never been a big fan of theirs really, but I'm digging Change Remains pretty hard.
