Bands that added that last essential member only after several years and several albums

Sonic Youth and Steve Shelley, YLT and James McNew. What other bands were established but didn't have a particularly stable lineup until that last piece fell into place?

I didn't have any idea what to search for to see if this thread had already been done.

Also, EVOL came out 20 years ago this month. Yikes.

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Monday, 27 March 2006 01:15 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't say several albums -- just two, though the band were already well established and scoring hits -- but Budgie joining Siouxsie and the Banshees = genius.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 March 2006 01:17 (twenty years ago)

Lindsey and Stevie joining Fleetwood Mac.

sleeve (sleeve), Monday, 27 March 2006 01:34 (twenty years ago)

Would you say that about the Rolling Stones with Ronnie Wood? I mean its ironic that he's such a face for the Stones now, even though he wasn't on their best albums.

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Monday, 27 March 2006 01:38 (twenty years ago)

I thought about mentioning them, but it seemed disrespectful somehow to Peter Green. (F.Mac xpost)

Ah, I just thought of another -- Joe Walsh and the Eagles. He's not an "essential" member, but they kind of solidified the lineup with him.

I wouldn't include him because of that. But I'm not much of a Stones fan post-Exile.

AC/DC, roight?

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Monday, 27 March 2006 05:10 (twenty years ago)

i feel the opposite about AC/DC, although they've never sucked.

XTC... not to denounce Barry or Terry of course. These guys were brilliant and radiant. But Dave Gregory was the glue that held the band together forever, moreso in the mid 80s than when he first popped up on their third album. Ironically, he left acrimoniously many years ago.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Monday, 27 March 2006 05:22 (twenty years ago)

Also, Zach... for Low.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Monday, 27 March 2006 05:23 (twenty years ago)

And who knows, maybe Jared and Coady (Big Business) will make up the best Melvins rhythm lineup ever, after over two dozen albums.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Monday, 27 March 2006 05:24 (twenty years ago)

Clovis Lupin (Clovis), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Rush and Neil Peart

Huh, I didn't realize Peart wasn't an original member. That's the kind of stuff I started this thread for. (But according to AMG, it wasn't "several years and several albums" later.)

pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

oops, sorry!...I forgot about the "several years/albums" criteria, and just went for it...

still, one does wonder: whatever did become of ol' John Rutsey?...

hank (hank s), Monday, 27 March 2006 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes getting Teddy Pendergrass.

UM, PINK FLOYD.

Lanky Ed, Monday, 27 March 2006 22:15 (twenty years ago)

still, one does wonder: whatever did become of ol' John Rutsey?...

From http://www.weht.net/WEHT/John_Rutsey.html

The stories we heard growing up was that he quit the band thinking "they were going nowhere". It appears the main reason he left the group was due to health reasons, he had diabetes and couldn't go on extended tours.

After a failed attempt to start another band he quit drums altogether and became a body builder, apparently living in Toronto.

The Equator Lounge (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:26 (twenty years ago)

Echo joining the Bunnymen?

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Thursday, 30 March 2006 10:23 (twenty years ago)

King Crimson and Yes, to some extent (only IMO they were better without Belew and Rabin)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 30 March 2006 12:37 (twenty years ago)

xpost nah, Echo left after the first single.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 30 March 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Crimson's history with Belew is a lot longer than its history without him, but it hasn't exactly stabilized the lineup -- they keep playing bass/drums musical chairs. I'm kind of looking forward to Crim reactivation in '07, even though the Projekct Six (Fripp + Belew on drums) stuff I heard in Memphis was not particularly interesting.
