Me: "God put a smile on your face", for some nice musical touches, acoustic/electric interplay, a decent beat, and a lyric that you can't quite work out if it's ironic or not (which is in itself ironic).

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 27 March 2006 08:41 (twenty years ago)

"Such A Rush" from the Blue Room EP, back before their debut album. It estabishes a real atmosphere and breaks into something approaching an indignant and impassioned frenzy. "Clocks" a close second, "Square One" third.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 27 March 2006 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Don't Panic - this is a really beautiful and effortless tune and takes me back to when they sounded fresh and promising to me rather than turgid, bland and shit.

perhaps they could be as great as Talk Talk one day - it would require a shedload of heroin though

john clarkson, Monday, 27 March 2006 08:58 (twenty years ago)

i have never heard coldplay but their singer looks like a wuss.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Monday, 27 March 2006 09:05 (twenty years ago)

"White Shadows". For me, this is one of the rare tracks where Jonny Buckland's lack of ability on the guitar actually works in his favour, and I like the wordless vocal that sees out the chorus. One of their better wannabe Interpol songs.

Lotta Continua (Damian), Monday, 27 March 2006 09:06 (twenty years ago)

"For You" - an old b-side, I believe. Simple and quite lovely.

David Orton (scarlet), Monday, 27 March 2006 09:09 (twenty years ago)

hmm.. probably shiver

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Monday, 27 March 2006 09:09 (twenty years ago)

Something from the new record, but don't remember the title.

zeus (zeus), Monday, 27 March 2006 09:28 (twenty years ago)

It'll take every poppy in Afghanistan for Chris Martin to have 0.1-per-cent of the greatness that Mark Hollis has.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Monday, 27 March 2006 09:48 (twenty years ago)

Shiver seconded. Still a lovely song, even if they are incredibly awful now.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 27 March 2006 10:24 (twenty years ago)

i worked out over the weekend that if you replaced c martin's vocals on the jlc 'talk' remix with britney spears' vocals, then i would probably love it.

Trouble - no question

Clocks.

Venga (Venga), Monday, 27 March 2006 12:22 (twenty years ago)

I think I'll go for "What If", the best song on their best album yet.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 27 March 2006 12:33 (twenty years ago)

"Clocks"

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:10 (twenty years ago)

But Geir, "What If" is a turgid, melody-less ballache of a song?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:13 (twenty years ago)

"High Speed" off the Blue Room EP. Proves they could've been interesting if Martin hadn't spotted the gap in the Bridget Jones market.

Why does the birds always shitting on me? (noodle vague), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:15 (twenty years ago)

But Geir, "What If" is a turgid, melody-less ballache of a song?

It isn't. It is beautiful. Particularly the beautiful chorus, which is what makes it the best thing they've ever done.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:18 (twenty years ago)

answering this seriously, nick is right about 'such a rush', and 'god put a smile on your face' has of all the shocking things you never expected to hear in a coldplay song an interesting chord change in it. in fact i would go so far as to say that with a better singer (anyone from b spears up really) those two songs would be Properly Good.

all those people saying 'clocks' - can you actually genuinely remember any of it apart from the piano riff?!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:22 (twenty years ago)

all those people saying 'clocks' - can you actually genuinely remember any of it apart from the piano riff?!

They are hip-hop fans. They wouldn't be able to tell a good tune from a bad one anyway, the only thing they notice is riffs and grooves.

Poor people - they miss all the best parts.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 27 March 2006 13:24 (twenty years ago)

POO is the right title for this thread cause they had only one really good song:
High speed from the 1st record.

samuel the puller, Monday, 27 March 2006 13:28 (twenty years ago)

It's odd isn't it? Not one song so far with more than one vote.

(reads thread) OK apart from "Shiver" with two votes.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Ahem. I believe two of us voted for "High Speed".

Why does the birds always shitting on me? (noodle vague), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:16 (twenty years ago)

soz.

They are hip-hop fans. They wouldn't be able to tell a good tune from a bad one anyway, the only thing they notice is riffs and grooves.

Poor people - they miss all the best parts.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:17 (twenty years ago)

"Don't Panic" for me as well.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:24 (twenty years ago)

The one they haven't written yet.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:31 (twenty years ago)

"The one they haven't written yet. "

...and will never do.
they go down into being serious dud band with every record.

samuell the puller, Monday, 27 March 2006 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Can I say Jamelia's "See It In A Boy's Eye"?

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I like that one with the great riff and the groove.
Oh, wait - such a song doesn't exist.

Failing that, "Clocks" is indeed kinda pretty. But only if you can ignore the miserable singer. (ANY of their songs would be more enjoyable as instrumentals.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

...and speaking of "Clocks", why does it remind me of "Life In A Northern Town"?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

the original DON'T PANIC seconded. also CLOCKS yes.

piscesboy, Monday, 27 March 2006 15:12 (twenty years ago)

Clocks

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

"Amsterdam" off the second record is fantastic. And I liked the first record when it came out, haven't much listened to it since. Always hated "Yellow" and its omniscience kind of turned me off from the whole album. The third one is unlistenable. I tried twice.

finish (piekoz), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

the one where they blatantly steal the riff from cinnamon girl

clocks

tremendoid (tremendoid), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, of course I can remember more of "Clocks" than the piano riff. Although the piano riff is a big part of why I like it: I'm an absolute sucker for anything in that syncopated 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2 rhythm, which I first noticed in certain songs by Stereolab. "Clocks" also has a monster bridge. I like "Speed of Sound" a lot, too, but consider it mostly to be a "Clocks" rewrite.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:59 (twenty years ago)

another vote for "God Put A Smile on Your Face", not bad at all

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Monday, 27 March 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

The last 30 seconds of "Let's Talk."

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 27 March 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

The b-side "I Ran Away" is the best song they have ever written, hands down. Then follows "Sparks" from Parachutes.

joe schmoe (joeschmoe), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

i guess if i haaaave to vote, it'll have to be shiver. there are several good songs on the first album...

jonathan - stl (jonathan - stl), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:13 (twenty years ago)

"Don't Panic"

The first album, while being absolutely toothless, was at least pleasant to listen to and even easier to fall asleep to.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:23 (twenty years ago)

"Don't Panic" again. All though it's nice to hear "Shiver" and "Sparks" amid the two overplayed singles from the first LP and every single after.

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:47 (twenty years ago)

Anybody else agree with me that Parachutes just BEATS THE LIVING PISS out of their other two records?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 02:22 (twenty years ago)

It's sad that I know any of the post-Parachutes B-sides, but I really like "Crests of Waves." Title track off A Rush of Blood to the head comes a close second. Call me a pansy, but I love the way he sings the word "beckons."

danzig (danzig), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 02:42 (twenty years ago)

I'd take the first five tracks (however overplayed they are) and the title track from A Rush... and tracks 3-7 and Til Kingdom Come from the latest and the debut and that's all the Coldplay anyone needs.

MitchellStirling (MitchellStirling), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 03:12 (twenty years ago)

Shiver

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 03:45 (twenty years ago)

Anybody else agree with me that Parachutes just BEATS THE LIVING PISS out of their other two records?

Yes, although i like "In My Place", "Talk" and "Fix You".

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 07:08 (twenty years ago)

hard to imagine coldplay beating the living piss out of anything

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 08:09 (twenty years ago)

I've only heard the songs that are played on the radio, and it took me a while of searching lyrics on the internets to find the title of this one, but I think it's my favorite of the one's I've heard: "In My Place".

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Dear me. (I say this because "In My Place" was the song that so thoroughly tipped my feelings about them over into active hate and loathing.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I don't see why anyone would hate & loath that song. It seems rather pleasant, pretty verse & chorus melodies, a nice stately pace, that rock-as-chamber-music feel that Christgau says Brit rock bands often aspire to, pretty good singing, rather direct lyrics of a time-tested love-song variety. What's not to like? It's possible I might like other of their songs more, but this is the one I always hear, so it's kind of lodged itself in my brane. I'd be tested to even think of another Coldplay song that I can remember well enough to say whether I like it or not.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:17 (twenty years ago)

"Sparks" is beautiful....in fact Parachutes does beat the piss out of everything they have ever done. Their Parachutes and A Rush of Blood B-sides are very good as well.

Danzig OTM. "Crest of Waves" is a beautiful song.

joe schmoe (joeschmoe), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Ned is right about "In My Place". The main guitar line is far too dull to be the main element of the song. I've said it before, but Jonny Buckland really makes Ed O'Brien look like Eddie Van Halen - his lack of invention and imagination is just that painful.

Lotta Continua (Damian), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

I think the guitar line is nice. Its stately ebb and flow suggests both the restraint of chamber music & the innocence of children's music - with that little "oh yeah" hook pulling us forward - it sets up a nice contrast with the chorus's soaring outburst.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Sparks is the first thing that popped into my mind. Mostly because it was used in Wedding Crashers and i've been meaning to give another listen to it for about 7 months now.

gspm (gspm), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Yellow.

I'm sort of ambivalent about Coldplay. The vitriol flung at them seems excessive. They're an easy target, criticising them too often seems a way of gaining kudos. Rather a tedious way.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 19:55 (twenty years ago)

"We Never Change"....you know that part where his voice cracks near the end....amazing stuff

i clicked here thinking someone was claiming Coldplay is poo also! (their not)

Wrinklepaws (Wrinklepaws), Thursday, 30 March 2006 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm more troubled by the suggestion that people slag Coldplay to score points than the idea that they have more than one good song.

Lotta Continua (Damian), Thursday, 30 March 2006 21:11 (twenty years ago)

JACQUES LU CONT REMIX OF "TALK"

Politik. That or Shiver anyway.

yer mam! (yer mam!), Saturday, 1 April 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard the JLC remix of "Talk," but that sounds like it'd be the best, because "Talk" is the best Coldplay song (even though it's Kraftwerk's fault for making it any good), and any JLC remix is better than any Coldplay song.
