i'm kinda stuck at A/E/F/G/H/U/V/

i have J reserved for Japanoise, as that seems an actual term for Japanese noise artists

what would be your a-z? or what artists/labels/etc would you fill in at my missing letters?

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (echoinggrove), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

VHF doesn't seem much of a noise label to me though. What's a legendary noise label?

Fushitsusha i'm hesitant about putting them in cos its more like freerock/jazz/acid/psych no?

xpost - EN?

rizzx (Rizz), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Emil Beaulieu should be your L. or, even better, your R.

baby, disco is fuck (yournullfame), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

those VHF Skullflowers are classic indeed, but they're hardly from the band's most "noise" period. This Is... is almost acoustic. Carved into Roses isn't especially noisy. and no Jaworzyn in sight.

that's actually a good idea xhuxk! so go ahead people, your a-z please!

ps you put pere ubu in? why?

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 05:23 (twenty years ago)

why not?

Jack Cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 05:34 (twenty years ago)

cuz they'z not noiz mayn

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 07:30 (twenty years ago)

Huh?? In what way are "Sentimental Journey" off *The Modern Dance* and "Thriller" off *Dub Housing* not noisy??

xhuxk, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 12:28 (twenty years ago)

(These random new-fangled genre definitions make no sense to me, sorry.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 12:30 (twenty years ago)

noisy yes, noise no
sorry, try again ;)

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:10 (twenty years ago)

still need a Q though

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:22 (twenty years ago)

So how do you define "noise", rizzx? You're not making sense.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

And believe me, there are plenty of dime-a-dozen P bands around that toe the silly "noise and nothing else" party line more than Pere Ubu does. But Pere Ubu are about a million times as good, and interesting, and original, and memorable. So they still get my vote.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:29 (twenty years ago)

my unsubstantial and on the spot definition would be:

"noise is a collection of sounds where the use of melody and rhythm in a popular sense is abandoned and exchanged for sheets of feedback and white noise"

xpost - i understand that, it's largely subjective

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like an incredibly limiting definition to me. (And in what way were those Pere Ubu songs "melody and rhythm in a popular sense"?) (Also, defining "noise" with the word "noise" seems a little iffy.)

(Q could maybe be Quintron and Miss Pussycat, but they've never done anything I've liked. Also I'm not sure how noisy they are. So who else? Stacey Q and Quarterflash and Suzi Quatro and ? and the Mysterians and A.B. Quintanilla III aren't really noisy enough, I'll admit that. Queens of the Stone Age, Man's Ruin era maybe? I already sold all my Quasimoto and Quix*o*tic CDs, and they wouldn't cut it anyway. Guess I'll go with Quio until I think of somebody better.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:39 (twenty years ago)

i like how he questioned ubu but not the nuge

strongo hulkington is a guy with a belly button piercing (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:42 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i was wondering about that, too!

xhuxk, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:46 (twenty years ago)

it's limiting, and i'm not sure if i agree with it completely. im no music theorist or something. i've put in luigi russolo and the dead c as well, so i don't use as strict a definition as stated above

maybe ill just take musique concrete for the Q...or I need some kind of medical condition on the ears, which can be caused by noise, with a Q....or a kid named Quentin who got assraped at a Wolf Eyes gig and made the news...ach!

xpost - i started at pere ubu but as i saw that your definition was obviously much broader i wasn;t gonna bother with nugent, you know...i understand its subjective

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:48 (twenty years ago)

i like how he questioned ubu but not the nuge

yeah - and how do you figure konk, chuck? did they have a noisy phase or something?

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:45 (twenty years ago)

i always liked paul sutherland (from into the void)'s definition of noise: "it's noise when ya don't wanna hear it."

cb, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:46 (twenty years ago)

ha ha, konk were the REAL ringer on there! i was wondering whether anybody would notice that. (but i could probably defend them as noisy if somebody held a gun to my head.) maybe i should've picked Kleenex instead.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

awesome haha huh huh huh huh aaaah hahahaha huuuuhhuuuh! now try a serious attempt u *&$^#@%^#*&@# grrr

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

a limited definition of noise like that is what makes so much noise utterly boring and uninventive. noise has become one of the most moribund sound sets ever.

Jack Cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

thanks for clearing that up mastermind!

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:00 (twenty years ago)

one can have noise without either "sheets of feedback or white noise." see Solid Eye or Tom Recchion, both of which have been highly influential, including Japanese noise.

Jack Cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:09 (twenty years ago)

its true, my definition is hardly appropriate and i apologise for posting such a limiting description. i'll try to come up with something more substantial

rizzx (Rizz), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:15 (twenty years ago)

the wikipedia entry for noise is pretty dreadful.

Jack Cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:45 (twenty years ago)

"power noise"

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:49 (twenty years ago)

that's what i was thinking, ian.

off the cuff: i suppose one could start a definition by focusing on the organization of sounds that aren't necessarily traditionally musical, though even that's a bit silly since so much of noise is hidebound in tradition.

Jack Cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:52 (twenty years ago)

i tried to write a paper on the history/meaning of noize when i was in school and it was impossible to convey any ideas sensibly.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Bruce Russell's Free Noise Manifesto is pretty amusing.

see Solid Eye or Tom Recchion

and buy some of their fucking records. some of the only LAFMS related shit worth bothering with (along with airway).

Solid Eye - 'Voyage to See What's On The Bottom' from last year, maybe their best record yet

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:35 (twenty years ago)

all LAFMS is worth bothering with, though the Potts Brothers and Recchion are the best.
