I like the album and i can imagine that some songs (your blood in mine) would be great to see live, but i could also see how they might not be good...they are playing the last night of my spring break for $10 so it could either be a great way to end or, if it's bad, a terrible way to end a break. has anyone seen them? do they play a good show, or are they one of those unremarkable shows that you're done thinking about before the night is over?

Absolutely worth it. Saw them two weeks ago in front of 15 people in Northampton, MA. Second night of the tour, absolutely worth it - the live versions of the highly produced songs are interesting. One word: ELVIRA.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 27 March 2006 17:36 (twenty years ago)

this band is really disappointing.

crum (clikatowi), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:24 (twenty years ago)

The opinions on this band are so widely divergent, it's kinda amazing.

I was absolutely blown away by their show in Boston a couple of weeks ago.

Nigel (Nigel), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 04:37 (twenty years ago)

ok. good show. bring earplugs (ferrealz). be stoned, if possible. no hot chick though, thought she played bass. lead singer/guitarist is like Anton Newcombe plus Prince, and extra creepy. i think they have a member specifically for tuning the guitars (not even a roadie).

sovietpanda (sovietpanda), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 08:07 (twenty years ago)

Horrible. Saw them at SXSW, left after 3 or 4 songs. The bass player is annoying beyond belief with her out of place pogo-ing.

Wandering Boy Poet, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 11:15 (twenty years ago)

The aforementioned Boston show.

mattS, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

I saw them at SXSW and agree with Wandering (sic) Boy Poet's assessment. (Glad I didn't leave, though, because Of Montreal were stellar as always, beginning their set with the spectacle of a wedding dress-wearing Kevin Barnes stripped bare by his bachelors, even.) The pogo-ing bass player became a running joke among my friends, not helped by the fact that we kept seeing her around town.

However, I talked to someone who was there with me, who had earlier seen their Mercury Lounge show (the one that was praised by Pitchfork, apparently); he said that the NYC gig was as amazing as everyone claims, and that for unknown reasons they fizzled in Austin.

Sovietpanda OTM re Anton Newcombe comparison.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 05:54 (twenty years ago)

It occurred to me when I saw them the other night, and it wasn't a compliment.

five months pass...
Contemplating seeing them on Thursday night. It's at a really small, cool venue. Anyone seen them on their recent tour? Worth it?

Harpal (harpal), Tuesday, 26 September 2006 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

yes. set was short and sweet, but also very entertaining and LOUD. bring ear plugs or stand at the back.

wherewasyou (wherewasyou), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

I thought they were quite disappointing when I saw them.

But then again, I've not heard the album so I'm not sure what to expect. I just through they were play-acting pretentious tripe. and yes, I know that's rich, coming from me, a Dandy Warhols fan and all.

We Are The Village Green Psychiatric Society (kate), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

Oh they were just cringeworthy when I saw them back in March at Northsix. Captain Jack Sparrow decided to be cool and drape fishnets all over his mic stand, which, towards the end of the set, his guitar inevitably got caught in, knocking the stand over. And then he like coudln't pick it up.

BUT Psychic Ills opened for 'em, who were/are infinitely better live. Go see Psychic Ills!!

three years pass...

They've got a lot better, mind you.

It helps if you don't look at them while they play, and just let your head be bathed in the solar wind. If I look at them, I just want to slap the singer because he seems to care way more about how his cape and his headscarves hang than his guitar textures, but when you listen to them you realise, yeah, they make a really pleasing noise.

I'm sorry I missed them in April. Their new record is pretty decent.

More or less my attitude about Brightback Morning Light too.
