I've just bought myself a copy of Soon Over Babaluma, and the first track, Dizzy Dizzy is really doing it for me. Any other spacey dubby rock recommendations gratefully received...

But the Can dvd, it's got loads of great stuff including a very groovy 'in the studio' vid of Dizzy Dizzy.

Thanks, Dr, I'll look out for it.

I haven't heard a ton of stuff that sounds like "Dizzy Dizzy", but you might look out for a CD compilation by the French band Video Aventures called Musiques Pour Garçons et Filles. The early stuff (with members of Etron Fou and Lard Free) has the kind of off-kilter, trans-ethnic, buoyant quality that "Dizzy Dizzy" does, though is maybe a bit lighter in tone.

I don't think I've ever heard anything that sounds like "Dizzy Dizzy"! Apart from some other Can stuff.

video adventures sounds great. Cheers Dominique. And yes, dadaismus, I need to get to know more Can.

I hate to be obscure (not horribly obscure) but the track "Are You A Fish?" on David Cunningham & Peter Gordon's "The Yellow Box" is kind of in this territory, though it's got no drums. Also only a minute or so long...

Put it this way: The Yellow Box is nothing like Can, and features mostly short soundscapes, but a few of them have a similar feel to what's going on in Dizzy Dizzy. See also "Provenance" from the same album.

i'd also seek out Holger Czukay's 'On the Way to the Peak of Normal'.

The 3CD Irmin Schmidt "Soundtracks" boxed set has some amazing stuff on it - "You Make Me Nervous" etc. And I'd recommend "Movies" by Holger Czukay over "On The Way..." (which is also a great album). As "Dizzy Dizzy" is sung by the late Michael Karoli, you might try his "Deluge" album from '82.

So Ho La (So Ho La), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Don't like "Deluge" and you have to wade through an awful lot of not-so-amazing-stuff on the Irmin Schmidt soundtracks to get to the good stuff. But "You Make Me Nervous" is a good recommendation!

This is great, people, thanks. Keep 'em coming if anything else occurs. I really like that sound that's both dubby/spacey AND has loads going on at the same time.

i'd also seek out Holger Czukay's 'On the Way to the Peak of Normal'.

OTM, also Czukay's "Der Osten ist Rot"

Some material on the Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 early-90s records has a very "Dizzy Dizzy" feel.

just wanted to point out the under-recognized brilliance of 'Quantum Physics' on that same lp...

"Ibis" from Unlimited Edition is pretty similar. I think of that as the song which links together my imaginary Future Days/Soon Over Babaluma double album.

"Dizzy Dizzy" is such an awesome track.
