Inferior to Closer, February 17, 2004
Reviewer: SRS (Oxford Ohio) - See all my reviews
This record is underproduced (New Dawn Fades, Shadowplay), and overproduced (She's Lost Control). It has an unfinished rawness that may appeal to some, but I think songs like New Dawn Fades are diamonds in the rough. She's Lost Control, with its mediocre mix, is greatly inferior to the Substance version, although that version wouldn't fit on the record.

Closer, since it's the greatest "rock" album I've heard, makes this one seem regrettable. Songs like Wilderness and Interzone just aren't on the same level.

This is a great record (it certainly was unique when it was released), when compared to most of the dross in the music industry, but Closer towers over it.

overrated overhyped overhere, February 9, 2004
Reviewer: A music fan from Saltford, Somerset United Kingdom

A good example of an album which is overrated to a degree that is surreal. One suspects that this has little to do with the music, and more to do with the mind set of the overrater on first hearing it.Badly sung, poorly played, mediocre, and in comparison to many albums released the same year, VERY conventional in musical terms.Of course the Velvet Heads will never agree, they lost their critical capacity some time ago.

poor stuff, February 9, 2004
Reviewer: A music fan from England

There are certain bands and certain records who are listened to by people with closed minds that have lost all critical faculty. This is one. It is obvious, poor, and derivative.Clearly it was tremendously cool to seen with it under your arm at the bus stop going up your mates in 1969, but the fact remains that it is musically immature, poorly recorded, and shallow. Listen to Beefheart instead.

White Light/White Heat. i guarantee it's the same guy.

Seriously Overated, May 18, 2004
Reviewer: josh_of_tunwells from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England
If you are not a ********* fan, don't buy this CD. It is just so depressing sounding. There is very little tune here. The only thing to commend it are the lyrics. Musically it is very poor. Little difference between tunes. This band is just so overrated - they are not greats. Just annoying people whose music makes you want to go to sleep. Instead buy something a bit more underrated - like the Stereophonics. You won't be wasting your money then.

And the album is..?

THIS IS NOT PUNK. The Dolls were a very good glam METAL band. So many people think that this is punk and that The Stooges are punk. The first punk rock band in America was The Ramones.

.. but I was actually looking for this one:

Reviewer: The Orange Duke "orangeduke" (Cupertino, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
Built to spill sounds a lot like Jane's Addiction, a bit too much, really. They are loud, they are screechy, they are grating. If you like this sort of wailing hard alternative, why not stick with the innovator? Leave the imatator to rot.

When I listen to wailing hard alternative, I always turn to Built to Spill, don't you?

Open up; make room for me, July 31, 2005
Reviewer: patton (san daos) - See all my reviews

I despise this album. I know that's enough to give all you indie/Punk/Post-Punk elitists all the more reason to buy this album and pretend you like it, so proceed to buy your tasteless little hearts out. But this fact remains: Second Edition is a waste of money. The semi spoken-word song called "The Suit" is interesting and worth hearing just for Lydon's rare, non-shrieking monotone, but screw the rest of the album. I prefer Lydon's melodious wailing from PiL circa 1983-1992. His solo dance album is tops as well (Psycho's Path, I believe). What else can I say; I'm happy with his lovely pop-infused work. I suppose I'm easy to please (unlike all you embittered pricks pretending to like something like Second Edition that Lydon purposely made to be unlistenable)

can i give it no stars? no? darn. . ., May 3, 2003
Reviewer: A music fan
Okay, I saw this musical with my school, at Ford's Theater of all places. A review I read there said that the reviewer was "enraptured" and "could hardly breathe." Me, I could hardly breathe for laughing so hard at the sheer stupidity of the songs. As for being enraptured, i DID have to stare hard at the stage a lot, simply because i forgot my glasses. . . Anyway, this music is pathetic, though it was fun to imitate afterwards. It's not worth seeing or listening to. It IS hard to write a musical about the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Why did they bother? In more simple terms, IT SUCKS!!!

---

It's not that funny, but it IS unhelpful.
Of course, it is possible that there is a review that 0 out of 204 found unhelpful, or that 1 out of 472 thought was unhelpful. If anyone can find a more unhelpful music review on amazon I would be very thankful.

Awful show, waste of music, November 29, 2004
Reviewer: John Q. Public "vhspreowner" (USA) - See all my reviews
To put it mildly, the show is a total waste of time and most of the music is either by today's artists who can not sing, or by more classical singers and bands whose music is better left heard on their own CD releases.

musical fraud, February 5, 2004
Reviewer: Donald E. Sutton (Stowe, Vermont United States) - See all my reviews
The Art Ensemble of Chicago does not create music, they make noise with msical instruments. They take creative license to an absurdity of sounds that have absolutely no coherence as a group. Each musician is making independent sounds that lack any relation to any kind of central theme. Their music is not within any rational definition of jazz or realistically, any kind of western music.

This was a review for "Tribute to Lester" from 2003, hardly one of AEC's most 'out' records....

*/***** The History of the Homosexual Music Industry, August 25, 2002
Reviewer: Robert Jay Galtman (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews
I bought this book expecting to read about the history of DJing. Instead, I was bombarded with page after page of the history of music and how homosexuals played such a big role in the disco era. The majority of the chapters relate only to certain genres of music and the few chapters that do focus on DJing (or at least one would think this from their titles) fail miserably. I will sum up my disappointment with one simple question - Did these authors even have DJs in mind when they wrote this book?

Yes. Someone has bought a book about the history of dance music and is shocked, shocked to find gay people figure largely in said history.

The best film ever made..., May 27, 2004

Reviewer: frumpy-old-spinster (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This film is not "deeply disturbibg" or is it "only for film historians", people who wrote bad reviews on this dvd, obviously are not inteligent enough, and the film went over thier heads as it would if a 3 year old were watching it.

This film is a classic, not just for it's AMAZING filmography, whcih was new at the time, and still is breathtaking today, but because of the "controverisal" subject matter, which wasn't so controversial at the time of it's release.

This dvd must be watched, and is hard to review, but it is a classic, and when it's over, you'll find yourself pushing the play button again and warching it twice in a row!

This film will do one of two things it will either move you and make you realzie this was along with Gone With The Wind, one of the best film of all time, or it will go right over your head, and you'll yell "racism", and just blow it off, and not even realize it's a classic. This film is more likely to appeal however to people who tend to gravitate towards listening to jazz and classical music, people more sophistocated and who liek fine wines and live a more luxurious or should I say cultured lifestyle.
