Plans for a major dance music festival on the banks of Loch Ness have been unveiled.

Fatboy Slim, aka Norman Cook, and DJ Carl Cox are to lead the line-up for "Rock Ness", along with Skye-born Mylo.

It is hoped the event on 24 June will attract 20,000 festival-goers, making it one the biggest music events ever to take place in the Highlands.

Visiting the site at Dores, Norman Cook said he would bring "bling and glamour to a traditional Scottish scene."

He arrived for the launch wearing his trade mark Hawaiian shirt in conditions locals would have described as chilly.

Explaining why he was coming to Loch Ness for the event, he said: "The prospect of seeing the monster."

He added that the police would not allow him to stage another gig in Brighton and said the Loch Ness gig would be a "big and exciting" event.

It will come close to rivalling the Highlands' biggest event, the Black Isle Show, for numbers.

Organisers claim Rock Ness is likely to be the hottest ticket dance music festival in Europe this summer.

I just can't get past that awful name.

Fatboy used the term "bling", has nobody given him the hint that the term went from cool to being GMTV patter about 6 years ago?

Also, a dance festival, called Rock Ness.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Hell the whole idea is just risable.

The Black Isle Show is just loads of folks selling cows and stuff. It's hardly a comparison. (OK, they do gigs over the weekend as well, but they aren't quite on this scale)

What the fuck is wrong with the people booking for English dance festivals, nay festivals period is beyond me at this point.

Having said that, there is some Dubstep on the Bestival bill this year, but I suspect it's as much because it's homegrown as anything else that it's been noticed (see also: Nathan Fake/Border Community (harsh, and not entirely fair but...). If it's English is must be relevant & important right? wrong?

Loch Ness isn't in england.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

And Mylo isn't English.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Maybe Nessie will go on the rampage.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:23 (twenty years ago)

And I bet it's like T In The Park where assholes wear kilts to show how much they love the scottish fans.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

*cough* Great Britain?

okay... fair cop! Triptych, ATP etcetera all heavily excepted.

Hang on, is it 1998? Boy have I been drunk.

Robocock (noodle vague), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:27 (twenty years ago)

God, it's on the Scottish news the now. Just showing clips of the pleb-fest that his Brighton shows were. Cunts up lamposts pumping their index fingers in the air and gurning like Compo from Last of the Summer Wine. So basically the equivalent of that, in the highlands. Crivens.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Help ma boab!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:35 (twenty years ago)

I'm black-afronted.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:37 (twenty years ago)

If ever there was a moment for some huge pleisiosaur to rear up out of the loch and start eating motherfuckers right and left...

Robocock (noodle vague), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Plebisaur?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:40 (twenty years ago)

People in kilts = a good thing. People coming to the Highlands = a good thing.

(fatboy slim = not that good a thing, but hey, can't have everything)

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:41 (twenty years ago)

The only time I've worn a kilt I was doing a Jean-Paul Gaultier impression. Then I got pissed and fell in a rosebush.

Robocock (noodle vague), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:42 (twenty years ago)

See, good thing.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

It was still better than going to this gig.

Robocock (noodle vague), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

You mean you were sober when you put it on?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Were you a true noodle vague?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Rock Ness vs T In The Park 2006.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Are Texas contractually obliged to play T in the Park until they're all dead?

Robocock (noodle vague), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:00 (twenty years ago)

and paul weller.
I'm just amazed Ocean Colour Scene aren't playing it.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Visiting the site at Dores, Norman Cook said he would bring "bling and glamour to a traditional Scottish scene."

ugh at the kultural assumptions behind that quote. FOAD, fatboy.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:03 (twenty years ago)

You mean the cultural assumptions that Norman Cook could bring bling and glamour to anywhere in the world, ever?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:08 (twenty years ago)

is he talking about his wife?

All he will bring is Zoe Ball.

x-post

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:11 (twenty years ago)

I should probably not bitch until the line-up is complete but it's not really making me think any less about Benicassim or Sonar just yet.

There's a massive dance scene in the Highlands, always has been. What they mean by "bling and glamour" is "people". I bet the proprietors of the Dores Inn are rubbing their hands in glee, being the only pub out that way.

in conditions locals would have described as chilly.

Again with the stereotypes, (though i don't know what that means - is it "even those hardy Highlanders might find it cold"? - I figure it's poking fun anyway)

I should probably not bitch until the line-up is complete but it's not really making me think any less about Benicassim or Sonar just yet.

There are shit music events going on all over the place all the time. What difference does one more make?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Is this part of fatboys thing to do big shows at major beaches around the world because he cant do brighton anymore.......is he including loch's now ??

grapple (grapple), Thursday, 30 March 2006 03:18 (twenty years ago)

i love that the words "i will bring bling and glamour" are closely followed by the words "wearing his trademark hawaiian shirt"!

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 30 March 2006 03:32 (twenty years ago)

Anything in todays (scottish)papers about it? I haven't seen any yet.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 30 March 2006 08:14 (twenty years ago)

"wearing his trademark hawaiian shirt"!

If by "Hawaiian shirt", they mean "shirt", then, yes, he was. Unless blue spotted open-necked shirts are the shirt of choice for Hawaiians these days.

"Apparently, there'll be Northern Lights that night. The site is a beauty."

Yes, you can predict the northern lights. Who knew?
