So, here's my situation. I'll fully admit for the ammount I read this board, I can't get into a lot of the stuff talked about on here. I'll save my embarassment and just admit my mix of my most listened to (and largely mainstream) music artists...

Killing Joke
Neil Young
The Rolling Stones
The Talking Heads
Black Sabbath
Bob Dylan
Oasis
Jimmy Buffett (Yeah, I'll never hear the end of that)
The Stone Roses
Random bits of KISS
early Metallica
Iced Earth

Please, somebody find me something new that just might fit into this random list!

There's this band called "Surfjan Stevens" which is kinda popular round these parts and would fit right in on your list.

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Thursday, 30 March 2006 04:48 (twenty years ago)

Try some Ry Cooder. "Paris, Texas" soundtrack or his debut album "Ry Cooder" from 1970.

So Ho La (So Ho La), Thursday, 30 March 2006 04:52 (twenty years ago)

I'd say two logical next steps would be Gang of Four - Entertainment and Television - Marquee Moon

Royal Trux!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 30 March 2006 05:16 (twenty years ago)

also maybe Hawkwind

Bryan Moore, one of my favorite bands is called Magnolia Electric Co. Before that name, the lead singer had a project called Songs: Ohia that was very similar. He's often criticized for emulating Neil Young, but hell, I love them both. You can hear some free tracks at their record label Secretly Canadian.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 30 March 2006 05:49 (twenty years ago)

Devo, A Certain Ratio, Giant Sand, Loose Fur, Vitalic, Whitey...

willem -- (willem), Thursday, 30 March 2006 05:50 (twenty years ago)

For the most NY-ish, I'd recommend these albums the most:
Songs: Ohia - Magnolia Electric Co (before he switched to that band name, it was an album name)
Magnolia Electric Co. - Trials and Errors (a live concert recording)

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 30 March 2006 05:51 (twenty years ago)

also on the Neil vibe, sorta - Built To Spill

timmy tannin (pompous), Thursday, 30 March 2006 05:51 (twenty years ago)

Swans "Holy Money"
Comets on Fire "Blue Cathedral"

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 30 March 2006 06:15 (twenty years ago)

DO NOT LISTEN TO combatwoundedveteran. your ears will be blown off.

i suggest: Wilco, Devendra Banhart's first three albums, Olivia Tremor Control. All good, all accessible, all widely available.

PS-- I like Journey, too. You might dig.

The 80's were shit

comer, Thursday, 30 March 2006 06:52 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Thunders was one of the first things that leaped to my mind too (NY Dolls then Heartbreakers before the solo stuff 'though I think).

Also, just to join up a few dots, I'd like to recommend / know what you think of: The Beatles; The Byrds; The Clash (very specifically London Calling); The Doors; King Crimson (ideally In The Court Of The Crimson King and Discipline - or failing that a comp. that covers both of those eras); Nirvana; Pixies; PiL; Ramones; Sex Pistols; The Smiths; Tom Waits; The Who.

Nurse With Wound

Flaming Lips

(You seem to like heavier stuff, so I gave you a list of music that intersects with metal on some level. Frankly, something that might help is looking at the ILX audioscrobbler groups).

js (honestengine), Thursday, 30 March 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and I like all (but one) of those bands too. That's kinda where I started out with getting into music on my own, then I just kept listening to more and more and more... I was really obsessive about industrial for a while, and then broadened out to the point where I like all sorts of stuff that I hated before (like disco and country). Just keep listening to more and more music. That's the only thing that most ILMers seem to have on the average joe— tastes broadened by experience. And don't be afraid to come back to things that you don't like now.

Oh, and get some Stooges stuff. Fun House or Raw Power.

js (honestengine), Thursday, 30 March 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Bob Dylan is a good band.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 30 March 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

You like Stone Roses: you like 80's (KJ, Talking Heads): try some Echo and the Bunnymen & The Chameleons. What do you think of old U2 and the Cure?

-rainbow bum- (-rainbow bum-), Thursday, 30 March 2006 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Yes:
Merzbow

Nurse with Wound
Head Wound City
Sunn 0)))

harshaw (jube), Thursday, 30 March 2006 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Mid-period Unwound (New Plastic Ideas/Future of What/Repetition)
Early Mercury Rev (Yerself is Steam/Boces)
Maybe early Pere Ubu (Terminal Tower/Modern Dance/Dub Housing)

None of this is "new" though.

drench, Thursday, 30 March 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Hawkwind is a good call, given the initial list. So is Swans. I nominate Scraping Foetus off the Wheel and, of course, Judas Priest, but I would say that.

ratty, Thursday, 30 March 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

speaking of merzbow, i've almost pooed my pants twice now because my iPod algorithm placed it directly after solomon burke

jonathon, Thursday, 30 March 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)
