Don't know much about this band other than they have had a little bit of hype. Read somewhere that they are in the U.S. touring in anticipation for a stateside release. All I really know is that they are a prog type band. Are they worth seeking out? They don't seem to have much chatter on this board, hopefully just being overlooked, but I wonder if this album is any good, as it is out in the UK already.

They're not really prog. Wacky indie-rock - more like The Bees, the Fiery Furnaces, the Guillemots than uh Yes or whatever. Their EP was good.

My tags say "cheesy indie". Reminds me a bit of The Coral, if anyone remembers. Not great.

Went and got a copy of the album as they appeared to be a bit more interesting and ambitious than the usual nme fostered crowd. However it's all a little underwhelming, especially on the tunes front. I will perservere with it though.

And if we're throwing names into the mix then it reminds me of a slightly more ramshackle James.

I've been listening to it more than I thought I would, It's high the quirk factor but some of the songs are very catchy.

I saw them doing a live set in HMV. Or rather I was trying to look for something in HMV and was put off by their godawful routine racket, not to mention that irritating habit of closing off half the record racks. One has to keep remembering that these places are run by idiots.

They were so boring and conventional they made Paper Lace sound like Penderecki.

They have a lovely house.

Pete W (peterw), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

they are incredibly dull, but there's an amazing remix of one of their tunes floating around, thanks to riton, a french dance music producer.

geeta (geeta), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

riton's from newcastle.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 31 March 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I can't get into the Guillemots either. Sound to me like the cast of Crackerjack doing the Arcade Fire.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 31 March 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

newcastle, france, it's all the same to us over here

geeta (geeta), Friday, 31 March 2006 15:15 (twenty years ago)

hee.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 31 March 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

BTW lauren, when are you getting back to nyc?!

geeta (geeta), Friday, 31 March 2006 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Riton remix is awesome...i believe it's the song "The Boy Who Ran Away."

youth problem (YouthProblem), Friday, 31 March 2006 15:39 (twenty years ago)

i think this album is great. the coral/FF/etc comparisons are completely silly.

Anyone know who's releasing this in the U.S.?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 1 April 2006 00:11 (twenty years ago)

its on 679 so maybe vice
i thought 679 was supposed to be into innovative music, not dullard indie

best debut since field music, Mystery Jets are a great live band.

geordie racer (geordie racer), Thursday, 6 April 2006 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Isn't one of the gimmicks here that the singer's dad is the guitar player? I actually find that sort of nice. I have only heard "You Can't Fool Me Dennis" so far, but I liked that song.

hey, this is great! i randomly took a chance on this album today to fill some space on my radio show, and was shocked at how much i dug it. "scarecrows in the rain" was the song i played.

New album produced by Chris Thomas is going to be out soon. The single is good. I like these guys. Anyone still paying attention?
