The Next Big L? The Next Jay-Z? (prolly not but I must admit this new Papoose mixtape is great)

Finally found a store that has good mixtapes in Mpls (except they're bootlegs w/shitty copies of the cover and no tracklist but hell 3 for $10 can't be argued with)..

anyway the dudes at the store told me to get A Threat and a Promise, it's a kay slay/streetsweepers tape from this new (or probably new-ish maybe he's been around for awhile) guy from Brooklyn named Papoose...

It's really great so far...on his uptempo more battle/thug stuff he reminds me a bit of Big L, really crisp phrasing and good punchlines/metaphors, but doesn't go so overboard that he seems just like a freestyle/battle MC....

...Busta Rhymes is all over this guy apparently, has a lot of interludes where he says Papoose is the best new guy in NYC....there's a crazy remix song with Busta, Papoose, Lloyd Banks, DMX, Mary J Blige (rapping! not singing), Rah Digga, and Missy....

one thing I like and don't like about it is that he doesn't just do battle/diss stuff on the mixtape, he actually has some more "introspective" type stuff and even some cool conceptual stuff like Law Library where he goes way in depth on all these legalese stuff kinda reminds me of 10 Crack Commandments meets like one of those gimmick GZA things like Fame....only problem is that when he slows down and gets all "emo" he sounds EXACTLY like Jay-Z, I mean exactly...

but anyway, it's pretty cool overall and worth checking out....

The crazy remix is "Touch It (Megaremix)"! It's great!

He's been around since '99 with "thug connection" and on 'G Rap's "roots of evil" cd. He's cool but he's dropped about 12 mixtapes the past few years since hookin' up with Kay Slay and i'm tired of him now

xpost

thx...like i said they dont' bother to photocopy the tracklist at this place...it's funny cuz it was such surprise when i was listening..at first it's like okay this is Busta (legend getting street cred) + Banks (established G-Unit dude) + Papoose (up and comer)...seems pretty normal...then it's like "Oh DMX! Hey where you been?" then...."WHAT MARY J BLIGE RAPPING!" then...."Rah Digga! i hadn't thought of you since forever" then "Missy wtf!"

haha I was just having a convo with someone today about how garbage Papoose is. it's kind of funny that the "Touch It" remix seems to be becoming his commercial breakthrough, considering there's at least 3 or 4 other people who have terrible verses on it and he's still the worst, like riding the beat never once occurred to him and he just had to do his cheesy conceptual rhyme about his fingers being the 5 boroughs.

that said this morning I was listening a mixtape he was on and the line "I'm like Al Bundy, I watch TV with my dick in my hand" cracked me up. and he's done some good tracks with these Baltimore producers, Stay Gettin' Productions.

This mixtape is available on http://www.mixtapetorrent.com/ which just became my new favorite site.

pa·poose Audio pronunciation of "papoose" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (p-ps, p-)
n.

A Native American infant or very young child.

* In the United Kingdom, a papoose is a device used to carry a child, similar to a rucksack; unlike rucksacks, papooses can be worn on either the front or the back. Papooses are sometimes considered to be an unsafe way to transport a child, as if the adult trips or falls, the child can be crushed. [1]

I saw that Touch It video - was not impressed. there's like 15 guests on the song and none of them do shit!

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 31 March 2006 18:19 (twenty years ago)

hmmm....I guess I like how he raps. He's not "garbage" to me, but I'm sort of sucker for that kinda-throwback NYC mid/late 90s thing he's got going on. c'est la vie I guess.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 31 March 2006 18:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah no offense to your taste, I think he is capable of hot songs and have heard at least a few, he's just kind of the butt of a lot of jokes between me and some other people. i mean, c'mon, his name is Papoose.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 31 March 2006 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Next up, Nappies.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 March 2006 18:28 (twenty years ago)

I think of all the current "he's going to bring New York back" false hopes (Papoose, Saigon, etc.), Tru Life is the only one I really like. (xp)

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 31 March 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Papoose is a cute name! It's adorable! (altho adorable isn't prolly what he's going for)...the guys at the store i bought it at seem to be very high on him....is he signed to a label yet?

I'm starting to realize that, even though I can def. get on board w/some newer songs I hear like I really like "Stay Fly" and the new T.I. song, that my tastes in hip hop got kinda frozen at some point and anything that reminds me of East Coast stuff circa early mid 90s I will always go ga-ga over unless it really sucks, like "Breathe" by Fabolous prolly falls in that category too, which I love love love....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 31 March 2006 18:31 (twenty years ago)

xpost I should check out Tru Life then...I haven't heard any Saigon's newer stuff...I only have that 12 inch from way back where he wants to know who killed Biggie, etc etc...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 31 March 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

is he signed to a label yet?

nah, but I think the bidding war that Kay Slay has been trying to incite over him for the past few years is finally starting to happen, he just signed w/ Violator Management and is about to drop a single w/ Swizz Beatz and is generally expected to sign a big deal in the near future, although it's not clear with whom.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 31 March 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of early-mid-90s NYC hip hop I saw that there is a Dead Prez "solo" album out now. Has anyone heard it? Is it more of the uneven with some high points the same?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 31 March 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

The Saigon song from the second season of Entourage is pretty good, but I don't have any idea what it was or where you can find it.

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Friday, 31 March 2006 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Papoose and Slay are holdin' out for a million dollar deal. He already turned a couple down.

Tru Life has been around forever too. I got that demo from the 90s with "fuck jake" on it and he was on the third Beatnuts.

"The letter p" remix with Kool G Rap is the Saigon track to check. Just Blaze beat and the only thing he's done as good as that "say yes"/"contraband" 12" you mentioned

Fat Assantino, Friday, 31 March 2006 18:40 (twenty years ago)

yeah I know Tru Life has a history but with the Def Jam deal he's joined the great white hope betting pool.

I can't listen to "The Letter P" for the same reason I can't listen to Pap's "Alphabetical Slaughter," if I hear one more mixtape rapper's boring alliteration/alphabet-themed lyrical exercise track I'm gonna drop a refrigerator on someone. does EVERYBODY who does one of those think they're the first dude to get the idea?

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 31 March 2006 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Heh but it had a great beat and Kool G Rap was on it.

All these dudes should stick to dropping 12"s or mixtape cuts on Slay/Clue etc tho as i don't wanna hear albums by them or their own mixtapes.

Fat Assantino, Friday, 31 March 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

yeh but didnt 'alphabetical slaughter' first surface about 98, 99? its not exactly new. when did blackalicious do "alphabet aerobics", 99, 2000? i love these sort of lyrically gimmicky tracks btw.

zappi (joni), Friday, 31 March 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

i love these sort of lyrically gimmicky tracks btw.

me too!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 31 March 2006 19:24 (twenty years ago)

K Solo did "letterman" in the early 90s, nigga

Fat Assantino, Friday, 31 March 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

was that before or after he did "spellbound"?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 31 March 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Good call.. "spellbound" came first. He was doing that whole gimmicky spelling thing on his debut verse on "knick knack patty wack" by EPMD on their second album in '89 too

Fat Assantino, Friday, 31 March 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

those were some of the first of those "gimmick" type songs i ever remember.
