for a comparison here's the top 100 for just the U.S., which is a little out of date, because it's from November, but by the end of the year Mariah had ended up at #1:

Im surprised U2 weren't in the global one yet Robbie Williams was.

Rodney's motives are beyond the comprehension of men (R. J. Greene), Friday, 31 March 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

#43 (almost all of those sales in December, or so it seems) is still surprisingly low -- or maybe selling 6.3M copies worldwide (in only three months) is a surprisingly high number.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 31 March 2006 20:57 (twenty years ago)

I'm amazed the mars volta sold so much.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 31 March 2006 23:07 (twenty years ago)

Back in Black at #145 is kind of amazing.

darin (darin), Friday, 31 March 2006 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Was it remastered and reissued?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 31 March 2006 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but that was in 1994 according to Amazon.

darin (darin), Friday, 31 March 2006 23:28 (twenty years ago)

...and Dark Side of the Moon and Beatles 1 rack up yet another half-mil each.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 31 March 2006 23:45 (twenty years ago)

Is there a hip-hop album that's showing signs of possibly being a back-catalog long-distance-runner the way DSOTM, Back in Black, or Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) are? (Ready to Die, maybe?)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 31 March 2006 23:52 (twenty years ago)

I would say Ready to Die is a good guess, despite the recent cease and desist put on it for sample shit. Also, maybe "Nation of Millions," "License to Ill," something by Eminem, Enter the 36 Chambers, umm.....

regular roundups (Dave M), Saturday, 1 April 2006 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh, definitely License to Ill but probably not Paul's Boutique or Nations of Millions, though: where's the current radio play?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 1 April 2006 01:47 (twenty years ago)

163. ROLLING STONES BIGGER BANG 459,620

This is pretty wan for a Stones' album, even if it was released in September.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 1 April 2006 01:51 (twenty years ago)

THE WORLD SHOULD HAVE NUKED ITSELF IN '63

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!! (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Saturday, 1 April 2006 01:52 (twenty years ago)

I think people on this thread have pretty inflated expectations for what a new Madonna or Rolling Stones album will sell in the U.S. these days, based more on name recognition that the indications of recent history.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Saturday, 1 April 2006 02:23 (twenty years ago)

This clearly demonstrates without a doubt that Coldplay are fucking shite. Well, I think their music is probably a better indicator, but you know.

Hat (Hat), Saturday, 1 April 2006 03:00 (twenty years ago)

10. Robbie Williams, Intensive Care (5.4m)

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 1 April 2006 03:10 (twenty years ago)

I knew that the Stones were rarely mega-sellers -- out of their studio albums, Wikipedia says Some Girls was their biggest at 6 mil, followed by Tattoo You at 4 -- but even considering the 1-2 mil range they've stayed in for the last two decades, the half-million number is very weak.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 1 April 2006 03:17 (twenty years ago)

As audited by the RIAA, the following is every hip-hop album to have sold 5 million+ copies in the US. (I don't count TLC, Shaggy or Kid Rock in this. If I did, KR would trump them all at 11m.) There are a bunch of caveats that need to be kept in mind here (take a look at a few SF/J noted when he compiled much the same), maybe the most interesting being that the RIAA counts double albums twice. The numbers in parenthesis note what year an album some of the RIAA multi-platinum milestones.

MC Hammer, Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em 10 million (8m '90; 10m '91)
Notorious B.I.G., Life After Death 10 million (6m '97; 8m '98; 9m '99; 10m '00)
Outkast, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below 10 million (6m '03; 10m '04)
2 Pac, Greatest Hits, 9 million (6m '99; 9m '00)
2 Pac, All Eyez on Me 9 million (7m '96; 9m '98)
The Beastie Boys, Licensed to Ill 9 million (4m '87; 5m '94; 8m '98; 9m '01)
Eminem, The Marshall Mathers LP 9 million (7m '00; 8m '01; 9m '04)
Nelly, Country Grammar 9 million (5m '00; 8m '01; 9m '04)
Will Smith, Big Willie Style 9 million (1m '97; 4m '98; 6m '99; 9m '00)
Eminem, The Eminem Show 8 million (7m '02; 8m '03)
Lauryn Hill, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 8 million (3m '98; 7m '99; 8m '01)
P. Diddy and the Family, No Way Out 7 million (4m '97; 6m '98; 7m '00)
Vanilla Ice, To the Extreme 7 million
50 Cent, Get Rich or Die Tryin' 6 million (6m '03)
Dr. Dre Dr. Dre 2001 6 million (6m '00)
The Fugees, The Score 6 million (5m '96; 6m '97)
Nelly, Nellyville 6 million (5m '02; 6m '03)
50 Cent, The Massacre 5 million (5m '05)
DMX, And Then There Was X 5 million (4m '00)
Jay-Z, Hard Knock Life, Volume 2 5 million (3m '98; 4m '99; 5m '00)
Salt 'n Pepa, Very Necessary 5 million (1/2m '93; 3m '94; 5m '95)

Also, a few canonical crowd-pleasers and where they stand (I'd get more precide data but the RIAA site is fuxxored at the moment):

Snoop Dogg, Doggystyle 4 million (reached in '94)
Dr. Dre, The Chronic (reached in '93)
Notorious B.I.G., Ready to Die 4 million
N.W.A., Straigt Outta Compton 2 million (reached in '92)
Public Enemy, It Takes a Nation of Millions 1 million
De La Soul, Three Feet High and Rising 1 million

Compare to a few famous slow burners:

AC/DC, Back in Black (1m '80; 5m '84; 10m '90; 12m '96; 16m '97; 19m '01; 20m '04; 21m '05)
The Eagles, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975) (1m '76; 12m '90; 14m '93; 22m '95; 24m '97; 26m '99; 27m '00; 28m '02; 29m '06)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 1 April 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

P. Diddy and the Family, No Way Out 7 million (4m '97; 6m '98; 7m '00)

haha, did someone retroactively go back and change all mentions of "Puff Daddy"? although I have to say it is a little disturbing to see that that sold a couple mil more than the 5 million Life After Death sold as a double to get certified Diamond. I always knew those 2 albums were pretty close in sales but the sad fact is more people bought Puffy.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Saturday, 1 April 2006 15:46 (twenty years ago)

2, 3, 4, and 5 are all double albums, so Beastie Boys is the actual #2. Also The Eagles jumping from 14 to 21 million between '93 and '95 - I didn't realize that Unplugged special had such an impact.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Saturday, 1 April 2006 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I saw that leap and found it weird, too. Maybe it reflects note just lots of mid-nineties sales but perhaps a more careful (or sneakier) audit of past sales as well.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 1 April 2006 23:35 (twenty years ago)

i was in high school then - so i'm not surprised.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Saturday, 1 April 2006 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Also, the list above was generated from this list on the RIAA's website, which as you'll notice rounds down all album figures to the lowest whole million, then lists the ties alphabetically by artist. So Licensed to Ill might've actually sold a couple hundred thousand more or less than Country Grammar or Big Willie Style -- it's impossible to tell from their figures.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 1 April 2006 23:47 (twenty years ago)

I think the dominance of stuff from the mid-nineties onward has more to do with the advent of SoundScan than anything else. it's been widely speculated the The Chronic sold way more than its official sales figures, and I'd ilke to think that it sold at least as much as Chronic 2001.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Sunday, 2 April 2006 00:09 (twenty years ago)

it's been widely speculated the The Chronic sold way more than its official sales figures

But that came out after SoundScan started -- though doubtless hardly every outlet for sales was anywhere near covered initially.
