I know there's a lot of folk stuff out there now, but I can't find anything in a really similar style.

I had written Jackie O off for a long time because I figured they were a schmindie version of the above, but man I saw them live a few weeks ago (FOR FREE)and I was very wrong. I got their tour CD but it was disappointingly song-oriented. What would you recommend to those who want to be fans of Jackie O MOtherfucker?

all the people who've played in jackie-o before, some of them for many years, are making really exciting music right now, too, most of them with brand new or imminent releases -- the 5 cd/ dvd white rainbow box is amazing:

* evolutionary jass band, led by jeffrey brown who i believe co-founded jackie-o -- http://www.community-library.net/artist_evjassband.html
* honey owens as the one-person blues-drone-psych act valet -- http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=47742349
* honey is also a member of nudge, whose latest release is on kranky -- http://myspace.com/nudgetheband
* adam forkner as the brilliant one-dude "power ambient" act white rainbow -- http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=47497082
* honey and adam together as world -- http://www.yarnlazer.com/world/
* and with some other dudes as a total amon duul 2/ goblin style freak scene dark yoga -- http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=63946312
* samara lubelski played with jackie-o for awhile and makes really rad and underrated (if a tad restrained) psych-folk -- http://myspace.com/SamaraLubelski

and fyi, for those jomf obsessives travleing to pdx anytime soon, tom greenwood has a new super small/ fancy/ cd-r label-oriented record shop called "clouds above valentines" opening this week inside the restaurant valentines -- http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/Content?oid=34122&category=22214

tom iz also a partner in crime at my brother dan bunny's shop *john doe* in hudson new york, so if'n yoo r lucky you may catch him asleep behind the cash register if yoo head up there for cheap vinyl. two floors of wax, so it might take yoo a while.

Though less song-oriented than most of the above, you might like some No-Neck Blues Band, who are definetely worth seeing live. I also second the International Harverster mentioned above.

i like the nudge stuff

Anyone know if JOMF is on tour or planning on it soon?

Lee is Free (Lee is Free), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Honey Owens has a nice voice. Valet must be pretty much the apex of the ambient a cappella blues genre.

Jackie O just finished a tour.

Iggy Regroups the Stooges
Published: 2006-04-18
Though the band garnered little commercial success, the Stooges, fronted by Iggy Pop, were definitely an influential band in both heavy metal and punk rock genres.

So fans and musicphiles alike are rejoicing that the Iggy and co. are back, putting together their first album since 1973’s Raw Power. The band did back Iggy on a few tunes for his 2003 release Skull Ring but this is the first all Stooges album released in over thirty years.

The Stooges are eliciting help from former Nirvana producer Steve Albini and White Stripe and Raconteur Jack White.

Though their sound in the seventies garnered much critical praise they’re not sticking to what they did in the past, according to Billboard. Pop says, “We experimented a lot. We're stubborn people. We could have just started out and in 10 minutes we would have sounded like us, but that would have been too easy. We'd have these get-togethers every two or three months for four or five days and bang out stuff. As time went on, it started to sound more and more like us."

After finishing the upcoming album, which has neither a title nor a release date, the band will likely hit the road.

I just bought WOW / The Magick Fire Show today, and shit, it is fucking awesome. It is ambient as hell but can also bring the rock, which a lot of this other psych/folk/improv stuff can't do so well.

Although generally JOMF is lumped in with the pysch crowd (see above, Thuja, Tower Recordings, etc etc etc) I also hear a lot of post-rock in it. Not all post-rock, but Do Make Say Think is definitely a good reference point. Check them out on Constellation.

That you buy a best of Chic Cd.

Then get the latest edition of The Times newspaper which is giving away copies of Forever Changes by Love.

Then you listen to both of the above.

Then you cleanse your body for 7 days by eating just (twice washed) apples and drinking water.

Then go to a fair and listen to Inside out by Odyssey, while on the dodgems.
