actually we are watching the "intellectual/ prmitive" component closely, to make sure it does not overtake the dance music grounding. but thats all we take from dance, the technology and the rhythm, the rest is up to us. we are not like liars, but we are also not like get physical or something. i can see where this would only garner points against us in some circles. it would make sense to adhere to one philosophy or the other, but i think we all like where we are the best, for better or for worse. if you ever hear our upcoming 'alternation' i think there will be a lot about us that will make more sense. or perhaps not!

Dominique asks:what kind of dance music do you listen to?
The Whole New York P Garage/T Loft Axis, Loose Joints/AR, Basic Channel, Moodymann, Theo Parrish, JAtkins, CCR, P-Funk, J Brown, Kraftwerk, Marshall Jefferson, Chicago/Detroit, Baggy, B Diddley, Bohannon, The Stuff Dan Selzer Likes, The Stuff Dan Balis Likes, The Stuff Dan Hougland Likes, Exuma, New Wave Hits, Roots Reggae, 90s Fall, Etc, Etc…
what kinds of things change in your own music when you integrate structured rhythm and programmed beats?
What changes? Apparently we get mediocre reviews in P-fork. I think you are missing Macrae Semans’ live sampling work. He’s thinking of moving back to NYC. It’s an odd question because almost every single Excepter track features sequencers, sample loops or drum machines.
who would you have remix your stuff?
This one guy did a 25 minute remix of “Shattered Skull” that was pretty interesting. We’re thinking of remixing some tracks off the next album to make them more dancey, but we have to work fast, so we’ll probably just do it ourselves.
Ian asks, ask him where he gets his hats.he's a very stylish guy.
OMG, army/navy, Broadway, St. Marks, etc
Dan asks, what kind of drugs does the band take?
On stage? Far less than you think. No so-called “psychedelic” act actually takes LSD to perform, except for maybe Amon Duul I. It’s all just beer and pot, right?
why the big turnover in members?
“Creative Differences”
how come with band membes with names like Porkchop and Zebrablood, you go by the name "John Fell Ryan"?
Christian names only on the sleeves, mate.
Where were you when you fell in love with House music?
Candy-flipping in Detroit with Larry Heard DJing.
LF asks, ask him to tell the story of the vacation behind the vacation / forget me 12"
I could say it’s indignation at the amount of vacation time Bush & Cheney are taking transferred over to a prophetic lattice of ex-girlfriend-in-the-sand situations through a lust for immortality disguised as “sad sack” behavior, or a basic hatred of sunsets and game playing, but basically it’s all about reverb.
ask him to talk about the show excepter played with nnck over new years (i think it was over new years, it was definitely recent).
A recording of the Excepter set that night was posted as “STREAM 3X.” It actually wasn’t the first time Excepter and NNCK had played together. An early duo of Caitlin and myself performed “Forget Me” after a NNCK set at the Hint House in early 2003. The two bands also performed together at a noise festival in Atlanta early 2005.
Firstworldman asks,do you intend to make dance music or just to reference it?if the former, do you think that making it more explicit would diminish whatever intellectual (or primitive) component is there? if not, why so oblique?if the latter, which dance music are you referencing and why?
I think a recent press release stated our intention was “to use the tools of dance music toward more esoteric ends” and I’ll stand by that. We have used drum-machines, sequencers, samplers and synthesizers from the start. Does making the music “more dancey” make it “less artsy?” Certainly in how it’s received by collector geek shut-ins, but it actually takes more of an intellectual, conscious effort to make things dancefloor-friendly, where as brutal, unconscious efforts are more of our stock-in-trade. It’s a balancing act, as Dan has noted.
Drew Daniel asks, ask him about the references to 'the back room" on the self-destruction album . . . Has ever been inside a "back room" in the classic sense (dark room for anonymous public sex at the back of gay bars, very common in the 70s during the height of pre-AIDS disco culture, still around in leather bars)? What/who did he do there?
I hung around the back room at bit at Luxx during the Electroclash daze, and actually met Dez from Black Flag there. Not so much sex, maybe a little graffiti and smoking funny cigarettes, but that’s the reference. I did have to fish [controversial mod edit] out of the back room at Squeeze Box back in the 90s, but that’s another story. I am aware of the “tradition.”
