This thread would be more interesting if it didn't focus on lyrics.

Referencing songs, not bands -- bands are a lot easier:

Pavement, "The Unseen Power of the Picket Fence" (REM, "South Central Rain" etc.)
Silver Jews, "New Orleans" (Animals, "House of the Rising Sun")
Pulp, "Cocaine Socialism" (Pulp, "Mis-shapes" etc.)
Self, "Trunk Fulla Amps" (Danzig, "Mother" etc.)

dan pee, Saturday, 29 April 2006 13:36 (twenty years ago)

not quite 'in the lyrics' but one of the Thompson Twins' singles contains the line 'you played me all your favourite records' which is then followed by a couple of bars of 'in the name of love', one of their previous singles.

(disclaimer, i do not now, and never have, owned anything by the thompson twins) 8)

Belle and Sebastian's "I Don't Love Anyone" has the lyric "I met a man today, he told me something pretty strange, there's always someone saying something, he said the world is as soft as lace" which pretty much references Felt's "The World Is As Soft As Lace".

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 29 April 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

"Volcano Girls" by Veruca Salt references their own song "Seether" and by extension of the quote, the Beatles' "Glass Onion".

Utopia's "Magic Dragon Theatre" makes lyrical reference to "the freak parade", at which point the keyboard player throws in a quote from the Utopia track "Freak Parade". The Todd Rundgren track "Fair Warning" manages to work in lyrical references to five other Todd songs.

On Can's "Halleluwah", Damo Suzuki sings the names of three other tracks on the album ("Mushroom head, oh yeah, paperhouse").

All I can think of is coheed and cambia's 21:13, which besides the name being an obvious rush plug, the guitar part from time consumer (off of the previous coheed record) is featured over new music.

Blue Filters (Gilkannon), Saturday, 29 April 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Dickie Goodman, "Mr. Jaws"

"The only thing you done was Yesterday" from John Lennon's Macca-hatin' "How Do You Sleep?"

O-Keigh (O-Keigh), Saturday, 29 April 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

"Titles" by Barclay James Harvest

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 29 April 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

On "...Sounds Like This", Nektar played (I'm not going to say "inserted") a bit of "Norwegian Wood" into their song "New Day Dawning".

Ricki Belloni (Pangolino 3), Saturday, 29 April 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Salt-N-Pepa's "Push it" quotes the Kinks' "You Really Got Me":

"Boy, you really got me going
You got me so I don't know what I'm doing"

Not sure if this is what is meant but in a song on Daniel Johnston's Rejected Unknown he starts singing Every Breath You Take by the Police.

Lou Reed, "Dirt"

"Do you remember that song by a dude named Bobby Fuller?
It went like this:
I fought the law and the law won
I fought the law and the law won"

You'll Never Put a Better Bit of Butter On Your Knife (Dada), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 08:04 (twenty years ago)

Hey now hey now now sing "this corrosion" to me

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 08:17 (twenty years ago)

"The only thing you done was Yesterday" from John Lennon's Macca-hatin' "How Do You Sleep?"
-- O-Keigh

But you left out the very next line: "And since you're gone you're just 'Another Day'"! (Macca's first solo single IIRC.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 08:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to second the almost every song by destroyer thing, but "Bad Arts" off Streethawk in particular references and modifies Joy Division's "Disorder" and may or may not use the main riff off that (in reverse?) as its closing solo. But that's just conjecture.

Pet Shop Boys: "I Want To Wake Up"

I stood at the kitchen-sink, my radio played
Songs like "Tainted Love" and "Love Is Strange"

According to the liner notes of the "Actually" 2001 remaster, the song was originally supposed to namecheck "Yesterday" too.

Tom Waits - Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis

The record version mentions Little Anthony. This live version breaks into the first verse of 'goin outta my head' shortly after the mention before going back to the song. It also opens with 'silent night'.
