The Experimental Pop Band- C/D?

Classic, I think- their album The Tracksuit Trilogy is great disco-inflected new wave pop music. I also think that their album prior to TTT, Homesick, is pretty decent too. They are also good for being out of step from pretty much everything that went on, and is going on, in Bristol music during the 90s and 00s. Does anyone else have any thoughts?

The only track I know was "It's hard enough" but I love that one. One of my first downloads!

What else? What were they like?

"It's hard enough" is on The Tracksuit Trilogy, and is probably the most hard-rocking thing on there. The rest of that album is more Blur-esque danceable pop with some witty and observant lyrics. They also made good use of sampling, in that they used samples that didn't get in the way of the songs themselves. The standout track on that record is, for me, "Emotion", which includes some excellent high hat action.

I have the "Punk Rock Classic" single which is amazing and it's got a great video too.

Live they're a bit of a snoozefest, I caught em down the Thekla here in Brstol a few years ago and didn't really enjoy it.

I agree with you about them live, Louie- I saw them at the Bierkeller in c2000 and they were okay at best. Punk Rock Classic is fantastic, and there was a great house remix of it on Poolside Records which I picked up in Replay.

BTW, Louie- do you ever post to the Choke messageboard? I did up until a year or two ago...

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 28 April 2006 08:14 (twenty years ago)

Hiya Neil.

Yeh that's me, I used to go on Choke up until a few months ago (I now have a new job where I can't get away with spending so much time on the internet!!)

What name did you post under? Are you still in Bristol?

I think I'll have to dig out Punk Rock Classic this weekend!

Louie_Strychnine, Friday, 28 April 2006 08:37 (twenty years ago)

I posted under the (silly) name The Bureaucrat, and had a rather cool picture of a squid as my avatar. I haven't lived in Bristol for 6 years or so (I'm in London now), but I'm still in touch with people down there, like Guy from Bronnt and James Mole Harness, if you know either of them...

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 28 April 2006 08:41 (twenty years ago)

I know Guy from Bronnt and I've heard some of Mole Harness' stuff (I was digging around the other day and came across an old CD by him, one with a pressed leaf attached to the cover!)

I think Chikinki are playing at the Croft next week, I'll try and get along to that as I haven't seen them in ages, it'll be the first Choke-like gig I've been to in a long while.

Louie_Strychnine, Friday, 28 April 2006 08:54 (twenty years ago)

Cool, say hi to Guy from me if you bump into him!

The new design of the Choke board is horrible. Totally needless. On topic, I saw EPB in about 98 and they bored me to tears, so I never investigated further. Were they part of the Swarf Finger Records axis, or just around at the same time?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 28 April 2006 09:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, they released their first album on Swarf Finger, although their later ones have been on City Slang. What else did SF release? They always seemed to be a bit obscure for obscurity's sake...

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 28 April 2006 09:36 (twenty years ago)

Insideout Eyes by Foehn was a great album. Haven't played it for years though. I think they did some of the Third Eye Foundation records, um, Teenagers In Trouble... can't recall anything else right now

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 28 April 2006 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't there a band called Pregnant on it as well? I think I've got a 7" by them kicking around. I take it they're no longer going?

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 28 April 2006 10:44 (twenty years ago)

Fat Paul who ran Swarf Finger now runs Invada Records with Geoff Barrow. Don't think Swarf Finger released any Third Eye records, but they did release records by Pregnant. And Voices Of Kwan and Gonk I think? They briefly ran a night in Bristol called Experimental Pop Lounge, that was a hell of a lot of fun.

I went to Espionage, at which Fat Paul DJed, which was really good. It was at that place at the bottom of Park St now owned by Massive Attack.
