Taking sides: Mingus Changes One or Mingus Changes Two?

I think this may come down to whether you prefer the vocal or instrumental version of "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love."

Maybe I shoulda said 'douchebags' in the thread title.

I like "Devil Blues." Though I wish Mingus had sung it.

I dig both these albums, but I think I prefer "Cumbia and Jazz Fusion" to either. "Who said Mammy's little baby likes shortnin' bread?"

These are both good records, I probably lean towards Changes Two as I got that record a half dozen years before I finally got Changes One. The song about Rockefeller at Attica is great on Changes One.

I think Let My Children Hear Music is the best of Mingus' later comeback records and one of my favorites. I think it is up with the larger ensemble recordings like Mingus Ah Um and Black Saint and the Sinner Woman. "Hobo Ho" also has one of Mingus fatest bass riffs this side of "Haitian Fight Song". The I of Hurricane Sue is also cool, with how it changes gears.

I will say of later Mingus, I still haven't head Cumbia and Jazz Fusion or the Live at Carnegie Hall record where Raashan Roland Kirk supposedly steals the show. Those two have been on my list for years and I just have not yet got around to picking them up.

two weeks pass...
Okay then, how about vocal vs. instrumental versions of "Fables of Faubus"?

I know of several instrumentals, but only one vocal on "Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus," which is probably my favorite of his records, so I say vocal. I mean, shit, it has swearing and nazi-baiting!

the vocal versions of any mingus songs. Fables of Faubus has that killer: "OR-Ville FAU-Bus" tag line.

Pick up the complete town hall concert. that is one great record, with another killer vocal part in the opener.

Thirding the "Mingus Presents Mingus" version.
